Buddy maybe learn a bit more about hockey before talking. Hockey is a fast and physical sport, and there is something called enforcers. He gets paid to play dirty, and hell no that’s not 20 games, I was suprised that it was a penalty 😂😂
Just because of the Jersey he wears. It didn't seem to be intentional at all. Yes, the hit was still bad and he will get suspended, but he tried to poke check there, missed and braced for impact. Again, not disputing it was a bad hit, but 20 games is just for bias against the team he plays for. Jeannot had an out-of-play fully intentional headshot last week or a couple of weeks ago and got 3 games. I mean, you come around the net with the puck like that you gotta have your head up. If you have ever played hockey, when you go to check someone you dont have time to purposefully get them in the head with your shoulder. He was just coming in to make a hit nurse had his head down
It didn't look intentional to me. Yes, the point of contact was the head, but Nurse was bending over. Hits always look worse in slow motion, but there was no elbow raised or other action to indicate that Reaves was specifically targeting Nurse's head. It was a basic shoulder check. I'm not sure if there should be a penalty. Hitting is part of the game.
@@Leroy-df3ee I disagree he missed the puck and went to plan B, hit to the head. The onus is on Reaves to not do any kind of hit to put the other player in jeopardy of being injured. Ref made the call, hope he gets a big fine and no less than five games.
To people saying the hit was Ok, you didn't play hockey at all in your life. The hit was completely unnessesary. It's the intention here that is cleary to injure. I love hockey, I love to play it but hits like that, especially in the professionnal league is unacceptable.
I played hockey for three years in high school. I took an elbow that cost me 4 teeth. I don't think Reeves targeted Nurse's chin with a laser, and I don't think there was intent to injure. I do believe unnecessary force was involved, but that's true for the NHL game in general. If Trouba had made the hit, it would be a different story.
When some people sayd this hit was unnessesary these people doesn't understand hockey It's ordinary hit and NHL, Hit like This did a lot of player, like Ovi
Anyone that has actually played this game would know that it is fast paced and split seconds count....so those commenting "he knew what he was doing" and "targeted the head" obviously have never played the sport (or if they did they did, they not play at a higher level and with contact). If Reaves left his feet then I would say it was intent to injure and targeting the head.....but this appears to be a clean hit that ended up bad as a result of how the Oiler player was positioned when coming out with the puck -- something to keep in mind as the hitter (Reaves in this situation) you are lining up a player for a check not knowing how they will move....he didn't leave his feet (so not a charge) and he swept for the puck before the hit so he was playing the puck first....just ends up that his position met a bad position by Nurse. Once again....fast paced game....things move fast so a slight movement by one player can make the hit look worse that it was intended to be. No different than when players turn their back at last second when taking a hit then go face first into the boards.
It is no longer a clean hit when the head is the main contact of the hit, that being said you are correct Reaves did not make any sudden moves or deviated his path, did not lift or drop his shoulder. Nurse was bent over a bit as well. Still the hit is a penalty and is suspendable the game is fast and hard hitting but they are trying to get rid of these hits to the head.
Can’t hit him in the head. Feet on the ice or not. Don’t give me this “if you’ve ever played the game crap”. We’ve all played the game and we all know what’s Reeves intent was.
Leaf's won't miss Reaves. Only way the Leaf's would be hurt is if Reaves was forced to play 20 minutes per game and the probability of that is zero. A suspension to Reaves however long it is means nothing to the Leafs.
I am a Leafs fan through and through. I will say I did not like that hit on Darnell. I disagree with Joe Bowan on the hit. I feel Ryan could have hit him hard but lower and away from the head or face. I hope I didn't offend anyone 😊
That was pretty sad but, it's not like Nurse isn't guilty of dirty hits himself.. I will never agree with intentionally trying to injure your opponent. The NHL needs to get these players out of the League for good. It happened to my team a week ago when Boeser suffered the exact same bs. He hasn't returned yet, the Canucks top goal scorer. The player that caused the injury should have to remain out until the injured player is able to return. Hate this crap about the NHL.. Suspensions don't stop it.
Correction... The suspension they are handing out don't stop it. Handing out 20, 30, 50 game suspensions will stop it. But that will never happen because neither the NHL nor the Players association care to stop it that much. Sad, that they don't even care about their own.
exactly, we're not all like that and it's not even just a leafs thing, every team's fanbase has stupid fans that do stupid crap yet people seem to think it's just a leafs fans thing which is not true.
Good hockey play. Nurse came around the net crouched on his edges ,looking down at the puck .. keep your head up. They been telling us since we were 9 yrs old ffs
Jeez that's a dangerous hit. Right when the clip started though, you can tell that Nurse wasn't paying attention, and was too fixated on the puck, while Reeves was getting ready to check him. Nurse was too tunnel visioned. Idk if Reeves meant to hit that high or not. It kind of seems like it may have been intentional. You can go frame by frame using the comma "," and period "." button on this video when it's paused. Nurse is a little taller than Reeves, but his head was too low to not be paying attention and maybe Reeves capitalized on that. Reeves looks like he extended upwards/towards Nurse's head, but to give him the benefit of the doubt, he could have also been bracing himself for the hit so that he'd be the one standing. In my opinion, it seems like Reeves at that last second knew where he was going to hit, but didn't want to make an effort to stop because he knew it was a clean hit despite it being towards Nurse's head.
I like how they brought up Nurse's head being down, like that's supposed to justify Reeves putting his shoulder into Nurse's chin... It doesn't matter. You still don't hit them in the head. Only time a person's head position matters is if it suddenly changes at the last moment, where the checking player can't avoid it. That's it. And I've watched this video several times: There is no angle that shows the positioning of Nurse's head changing in any way to justify the claim that Reeves couldn't avoid the hit to the head...
tell me you've never played a game of hockey in your life without telling me.... Reaves didn't jump into him, he didn't catch him coming up the ice with his head down, it was just two bodies making contact and Nurse took the worst of it.
@ Tell me you flunked English & Reading Comprehension without telling me… Where in my statement did I say he “jumped into him”? Tell me. I didn’t. And everything you said doesn’t matter (which isn’t surprising given your apparent penchant for running off at the mouth on things you’re clearly out of your depth on): The principal point of contact was Nurse’s jaw. I dunno how many times DOPS has to say this before it sinks into your thick skulls, but when a player checks another player, and the head is the principal point of contact, that’s an illegal check to the head. Doesn’t matter if you think it’s clean or “Nurse getting the worst of it”: You. Don’t. Hit. Players. In. The. Head. I don’t know how much simpler the point can be made (unless we have crayons)…

I hear a bunch of people that's probably never played a hockey game in there life. It was obviously not intentional. Keep your head up or kiss the ice.
his head was barely down and for YEARS they've been saying do not make the head the primary point of contact... he did, accidental or not.. penalty is justified and so is any subsequent punishment. Reaves could've hit him shoulder to shoulder and wiped him out just as easy and played the puck... he choose head or as you say not intentional, missed the shoulder and hit the head... either way, he has a history of this sort of thing so I can't see it going well for him if it keeps up.
They should change the rules so that a match penalty results in both the penalized player and an additional player of the opponent’s choosing to be ejected from the game. A 4th line goon that plays 6 minutes a game getting kicked out of the game has no impact.

Well the answer that question no because he still had 1 foot on the ice. 3. Doesn’t extend upwards with his arms or elbow to deliberately make contact with the head. Why because his body and shoulder make contact. Just unfortunate that nurse has his head down and leaning forward probably not expecting reaves to blow him up there but that’s what this league has turned into
As a Leafs fan, I'm sickened by that hit. A suspension is in order. (Apparently, he visited the Oilers dressing room to apologize to Nurse after the game).
The hit to me looked like coincidental, Nurse has his head down , and the Nurses head hit the shoulder of Reaves . Reaves did not drive the should up or leaped up he did follow through with the check . No malice or intent to injure .
I had to double take cause at first glance I didn't see nurses head going low and looked like reeves raised up to hit him but it was actually nurse who lowered his head , bad timing but when you throw those hits you gotta take accountability
It was the right call, but Reaves did not side step he did not deviate in direction did not move his shoulders and skated straight, Reaves attempted to hit the puck with his stick, Nurse was not standing straight and was bent over, not much Reaves could do other than finish his movement forward, as I stated the right call the head was the point of contact. If Nurse was up more the point of contact would have been the chest and or shoulder. Now I do not watch a lot of Leafs games so I do not know if Reaves has done this before. I think 5 games is enough. Hopefully Nurse will be OK but hopefully Nurse will learn that coming from behind the net requires you to be aware more and to keep your head on a swival.
I know lots of people say Reeves is the kind of guy you want on your team, but didn’t the Blues and Golden Knights both win cups after getting rid of the guy?
I think Reaves is out a few games after this. At one point it looked like he left the ice with both skates as he lunged into this headshot. He clearly had time and could have went for the body.

This isn't a dirty hit. Ive played hockey for many years, first thing coaches tell you, "keep your head up out there." Reaves is shorter than Nurse and made the calculation that they would be the same height if he was slumped over a 2-4 inches. So,he probably thought itd be shoulder on shoulder or shoulder on chest. He didn't leave his feet or use his elbow. Brutal hurt but not dirty. The league has changed a lot since the Scott Stevens days.
He didn't intentionally hit nurse in the head, these guys use short sticks and doesn't matter how tall you are you have to bend over to stick handle, it's a fast game and part of nurses head got caught in the hit. No more than a 2 min penalty I would say. Reeves isn't dirty he's big and so is nurse. Let's not blow this out of proportion. This isn't a knitting class, nurse will be fine, I've seen much worse.
Regardless if it was intentional or not. All hits to the head are and should be 5 minute match penalties. It s up to the player safety board to determine if a player deserves a suspension and for how long.
Nurse has 2 inches on Reaves for context, I don't see how this is considered an egregious head shot. Nurse coming around the net and Reaves is cutting him off. No jumping motion, no time to aim for the head, it's just an unfortunate position for Nurse at the oint of contact. Reaves gets 5 games because it's Reaves.
I know Reeve's obviously didn't mean to hit nurse like this. Sometimes in hockey players move last second or you just simply miss your mark on the hit. This unfortunately was just a miss calculated hit. Reeves almost felt actually bad it seemed like. I hope Nurse is all good soon as an Oilers fan.
The only reason this is a 'bad' hit is because Nurse has zero awareness there's a player approaching, if he did he would have defended himself and there'd be no call.

Season ending suspension? lol come on. It should be 3 games but with the Toronto DOPS tax it will be 5 or 6.
" The Wendel Clark hit on..." Why the f*** even mention something that happend over 25 years ago?
Cuz it's homer commentators trying to justify a bad hit.
They started by saying the hand went up well after the hit... Implying it's a reaction call.
Then once they say the replay they started fumbling for excuses.
Awful hit
Whoever that commentator is needs to retire or lose their job. That was so classless downplaying this.
That’s like mentioning Scott Stevens anytime someone gets layed out….
Because they were both brutal, hard Leafs hits.
And almost the exact same way, coming around the net, hitting player coming around the other side with crazy amount of speed and a absolutely hard destructive hit.
Both hits had head down by the puck carrier around the net with the defender looking for the hit.
This play points out that Reeves doesnt belong in the league and the Oilers don't defend their own.
Classless leaf fans don't even cheer when he gets up and skates off
Most of us were too busy cheering when Reaves was sent off.
Untrue, i was at the game and we did cheer. He was on his knees quite a long time getting his cut worked on so it wasn't until a bit later. And of course the fans booed the five minute match penalty (every team's fans are idiotic homers) but we hadn't seen the replay in the rink by that point, but once it showed the high hit directly to the head a large and very noticeable "gasp" went around the arena and we never heard a single "you suck ref" or complaint after that.

Anything more than that it's just the old "make an example out of the Leafs" and then that is never an example because other guys do worse and get one game suspensions or max 3.

No intent at all. But you can't make contact to the head, so I believe this is a penalty. Certainly doesn't warrant the match penalty.

Oh look, the gen z pussies are here.
@@williammiller-fs6cmhe 100% went at nurse with intent to fuck him up. Regardless of cleanliness
The Hit was comletely clear Reaves used sholder. Nurse his head put down himself, It's not Reaves' problem

Dude is 6’4” and plays chicken in most games, hopefully Nurse wakes up this time and finds some grit.
@ Tell me you flunked English & Reading Comprehension without telling me…
Where in my statement did I say he “jumped into him”? Tell me.

Save your breath and common sense....no room for that in here with all the armchair experts.
