Based on previous experience I don’t think UART would have picked anything up with an intermittent issue like this. I’d put money it would be something like “general power failure”. I think the only other reasonable attempt would have been to swap the PSU. I just wanted to move onto the next item, as I know I could have spent HOURS trying to get this fixed, potentially for nothing, or a max profit of £50 for say 10 hours work. Hope that makes sense.
@@JoeyDoesTech It makes perfect sense from a commercial standpoint. From a learning standpoint, I think it is a missed opportunity. You had a chance to confirm your suspicion or be surprised that you had something to go and fix.
The only way to improve your luck, is to wear a Bunny Suit for an episode! You did your Best, and that's what counts. Great Video, repair attempt, and Repair! Thank you JDT. 😀
As you mentioned, the company you bought the switch lite from fixes devices and sells the lost causes on ebay... that is not a good seller to buy from if you are hoping for a profit, maybe for spares...
Joey You can repair that water damage of the LCD (23:14) just opening the LCD carefully and replacing a translucent layer, its easy on the nintendos 3ds and 2ds.
It might actually just need to be cleaned. Take it apart, clean it with IPA, put it back together. I once fixed a cordless phone display that way after the phone fell into a disgusting pond.
I think you made some mistakes. After you tried to turn on the PS5 and it was on for a while (without picture) you shut it down, then you went to safe mode, and assumed that it works, because of the safe mode. But I think it was working, because the device warmed up. I believe on this console something needs a reball, or there is a broken solder joint somewhere. Probably when they take it apart last time they werent careful enough and broke a solder joint. (By bending the board, or something) I would check uart, maybe simething pops up. [On many old laptops, where you had dedicated falty gou chips from around 2008 (like dv 7) they werent giving a picture. But if you turned on let is sit for a few minutes, then restarted it, it worked again.]
I completely see what you’re saying, but the time it could take to investigate all of this board just wouldn’t be worth it. Makes sense to wrap it up and move on, that being said I could have tried the power supply. I think UART wouldn’t have shown anything from experience anyway.
You are missing a can of freeze spray in your tool box Joey. If you can get the Ps5 warm enough to run again, go round the board spraying the key components to see when it stops. Then resolder or replace (can literally be inside a chip/component or the actual package).
Joey…. Is it possible to take of the digitizer down to the screen and try to clean it?? Maybe it’s just water residue marks that can be removed?? Maybe on a live… The ps5 could be a power supply issue….cold start problems
Joey, wonderful video as always. You always keep me entertained at work when it is not too busy! Have you ever thought about maybe buying an amazon electronics return pallet and trying to fix those for profit?
There is so much return fraud and buying these directly from Amazon instead of a trader is really difficult. By the time the stuff gets to you, usually you get all the crap and the good stuff has been picked out already.
Agreed. I don’t think UART would have shown anything, but PSU should have been swapped as a last attempt, I just didn’t really have time for all the testing over and over.
I have a microscope but it is on one of those platform type mounts with limited range. What brand articulating arm do you use? It seems to be just what I am looking for! :)
Caps do indeed store voltage Joey but they are also used to filter noise on power DC lines. A capacitor looks like a short circuit to AC and open circuit to DC
If the PS starts and runs fine otherwise, but then reverts to no start when cold, you need to just step back and think what is happening on an electronic piece of paper in your mind. What is missing when it does not start? Check your power rails when it won't start. Possibly something is not firing up because of a cold joint or partial fail inside the component, which after heat from other components or minor arcing has taken place, the gap closes enough. Can be a b'stard to find, but these are the ones that are most satisfying when you do. Basically write down what SHOULD fire up and in what order. Then write it down again on another sheet. Now, what is different between it working and it not working? There is your answer. XYZ is missing when it won't start. It can be this simple. you just need to think very logically like water flowing or in this case electricity. What is blocking that pipe? What is stopping that signal? Good luck Joey. You will get it and that is when you move up the rank from good fixer to great fixer. Trust me, the buzz you get when you solve these logically is overwhelming.
Hi Joey, just a quick from business perspective and an EBay seller. I would defo sell those chassis’s as what’s not acceptable for you may be quite acceptable for others. If you never goi g to use them then get rid, £15/£20, whatever you get. It’s basically free money.
PS5 is probably a broken solder joint - when it warms, the metal expands and makes contact. Try checking continuity while cold and then reflow problem area
Nothing more frustrating than an intermittent problem. How many time do people experience intermittent problem due to a cracked soldering and just the right temperature will cause problem due to changes in temperature.
Years ago I remember my laptop was having WiFi connectivity issues in my bedroom at my parents house. I tried a tonne of things and kept thinking it was fixed for a bit only for the issue to return later on. Finally, if only out of desperation, I decided to unplug the original Xbox WiFi adapter that I was using for my 360, since I couldn’t find the proper 360 one, and not only did my laptop reconnect immediately but the problem never returned!
I can’t reflow all the chips on the board, that’s way too much time spent on it. I gave up because I have to consider time taken for fixes on this series.
Can't you do an OS reinstall in the background while doing something else? Doesnt seem like it would take much of your direct time to do that. Also any thought to repairing older "retro" consoles?
Can you provide a link to the microscope stand you use? looks different than the affiliate link in the description. Would like to get this same setup at home.
Can't speak for everyone but in Aus we use cross threaded, threaded for short, to mean that the screw or bolt is trying to cut its own thread and binds up. We'd normally use stripped to indicate that either the hole or screw has been stripped of its thread and spins freely without tightening up.
Joey. I have found that when trying to do a cold start, if you get 2 bits of white Hovis and place them flat on a table, then fry 3 rashers of bacon, you can enjoy a decent butty whist waiting.
Had same power on issues (if it can be applied to GPU) with one graphics card, one time computer boots just fine, and card works ok, another time computer cannot detect the card at all. I've removed the cooler and checked it, but most likely missed one damaged capacitor, then put it to storage for few months till I met the guy who agreed to look at it again, and He found this capacitor, replaced it and now card boot every time with no issues.
Maybe I missed it, but didn’t you test the PS5 torn apart but the first time with the fan and HD it started the blue light issue again? I’d focus on those circuits maybe? I don’t think you should hang up the towel just yet on that PS5.
Wish you would try more things instead of just giving up, seems like you just doing the same things over and over, thought this season is to be learning more, instead of cant fix it so I sell it, try uart, stretch the repair between episodes so we have something to look forward to next episode , that sounds awesome
This season isn’t about learning more. I have a new series on the channel that is about learning more, called Joey Learns. If anything I’m trying to move onto other things quicker to make a profit, I would have thrown in the towel with this one last season also. Thanks for the feedback.
From past experience fixing electronics I see similar issues such as the PS not working properly on a cold start and one of the things I probably would have done is change the power supply as a power supply could cause that intermittent problem on cold start and could cause an slight unreliable power flow or take a little time to respond fully usually points to a dodgy cap That's a possibility and something I would have gone for to rule out and from my understanding of PS systems when going into safe mode it generally doesn't pull as much juice as it would do in normal mode
Joey I'd buy a switch with the screen like that. I have an autistic 8 year old that wants a switch just for animal crossing. I wont get him an oled unig until he can prove some responsibility. Just my thoughts
Joey ,just a little tip for you ,fill up the ultrasonic cleaner with hot water from your hot water tap ,it will speed up ,how quickly the ultra sonic gets up to temp :) save,s a lot of waiting around . i usually throw a kettle full of boiling water in to cleaner ,to speed things up ,as you can see the temp display will rise as you add the boiling water ,get it up to 50c ,then allow the built in heater to do the rest :)
Hot water from the tap has minerals in it, which is worse than using demineralised water. I would buy an old fashioned "drop in" water heating element that people used in the seventies to heat up a mug of water and hang that in the tank of the ultrasonic to pre-heat. Take it out before turning on the ultrasonic to prevent the heater to get broken.
@@Google_Is_Evil you put the board in a sealy bag or ziplock bag full of demineralised water and cleaning solution ,save,s a lot of demineralised water and cleaning solution :) ,i forgot to mention that , my bad .
Joey, you should dip the board into isopropyl alcohol after the ultrasonic cleaner. This way there should not be any additional rust on metal components
Man, you've been giving up waaaaay too early for some time. That PS5 obviously has a reballing issue that should be showing up on UART. It's just a matter of reballing whatever 2 or 3 chips are related to the pointed issue.
In your opinion I guess. I can’t spend hours reflowing random components on the board, then waiting 24 hours before testing each one, that’s really silly. This is a series where I try and maximise time spent and profit, it makes sense to move on when it comes to temperamental issues.

Try swapping ps5 psu. Feels like an electrolytic cap not charging from drained/cold which after a little while holds enough to start up.
Give us a short glimpse/time lapse of the ultrasonic cleaner ❤

@ im not surprised thh, thanks for letting me know. I didnt know they go through them
Try using a fibreglass pencil to remove the rust marks from the PCB and components. It’s more effective and much gentler than using sharp tweezers.
I would use fine toothbrush because fiberglass pencil will remove solder mask and expose copper
I think UART and maybe a "new" used power supply worth a try. Anyway, good contents ad always👏🏻

On the PS5 if the problem occurred when first opened, why didn't they return or exchange it ? Or send it in for warranty service ?

I have enjoyed watching how your talents have increased.
If you use a mixture of baking soda and distilled water and make a paste you can use it to gently remove the rust
Joey. It’s the dialog chip I do believe and it can be replaced and reprogrammed
Try using a hard ' ink eraser' ( school ink rubber) to remove surface rust. I have found that to be quite succesful in many cases!
Stiff or hard tooth Brush and vinegar should clean away surface rust.

Whats the svivel mount/flex arm for the Anondstar microscope?
Vinegar dissolves rust and converts it to an inert oxide

use some vinegar for the rust remove
check the power, if it is the one that is bad, if everything works as it should when it is hot, then there is something there. on ps5

Yes at the end of the video you can see this information 😊
Could you see any heat 🔥issues on that PS5 using your thermal camera?
Just to clarify, corrosion is not conductive; in fact, it interferes with electrical conductivity of a metal surface. Joey just misspoke.
Good to know, thanks.
