Dyeing Paper for Junk Journals - The EASIEST and CHEAPEST way!

  • In this short tutorial I'll show you how I dye papers for my junk journals, and how you too can use this method which produces lovely results in the easiest and cheapest way!
    You will need:
    - food colouring in water (or if coffee dying - use the darkest, cheapest instant coffee jar you can find).
    - spray bottle
    - storage tub - this just keeps your area clean. You can use whatever storage container you have lying around, but i find a deep storage container works best to stop the spray from getting all over your surfaces, or the paper blowing away in the wind when its drying.
    - gloves (to avoid having blue hands for a couple of days!)
    and of course: a variety of your favourite papers, ephemera or even fabrics for dyeing! I once dyed an entire wedding dress in food colouring, so this method does also work for fabric!

    Looks so easy. My husband hates when I take over the kitchen to coffee dye paper.

      With this method you’ll never need to burn paper in the oven again haha! You only need to wait for a sunny day :)

    This is great, thank you! I've tried so many ways, and this is one of my favorites. You can also layer laces and stencils in between for beautiful effects. Your pup is so cute!!! I am also one who appreciates the shorter tutorials for ideas like this.

      I love layering too! I sped the video up but there is one piece of paper there which had the big doily stuck on top and it produced a really cool pattern underneath! I also used to have vinyl lace (which is pretty hard to come by these days without thrifting it) and that really produces great results :)

    Food colour dyed papers & fabrics aren't colour fast so they'll fade over time.
    Also, if you use wet glue or mediums the colours will bleed.
    Heat setting doesn't alter this.
    But overall it's super fun & the colour ranges can be stunning ❤

      Thanks, all good tips, the expensive alcohol inks or veggie/natural dyes DO last longer and hold up a bit better but I just dont have the budget or time/space to collect bags full of avocado pits XD
      I still prefer food colouring for an easy and cost effective way to add colour to journals :) I confess I don’t use wet glues or mediums so haven’t encountered bleeding colours, but this might be important for some people! Thanks for the tips!
      Its a very fun way to dye and produces such bright results!

      This is interesting. So you can’t make this color fast or last longer? How much longer do you think the food dyes last or what other inks would you recommend. Thanks!

    I especially like the pieces that had already been coffee-dyed. I hadn’t thought of using food coloring, but that is a great low-cost method! (In the past, I’ve added color by spraying other stains and dyes.) Something I’ve done when coffee or tea dying is sandwich the dyed papers while they are wet between stencils or those plastic table place mats that are molded and textured (from the discount stores). That can create some lovely patterns. And, of course, once they’re dry, you can dye them again with different colors to get some layered effects on the paper.
    Thank you for the great demo! ❤

      You’re welcome! These are all great ideas you’ve suggested :) the great think about foos colouring is definitely the cost!. I have “rainbow unicorn” coloured papers that i’ve dyed o3 or 4 times, and they turn out amazing.

    OMG! I have just bought the small pack of food colouring and was planning to give paper dying a go this weekend and I had wondered if I needed gloves ! You have answered any question I had and I am giving it a go - I love the colours and I can see a mermaid journal on the way - thank you for sharing - you had fabulous results

    #replay I love how these papers turned out. After the journal is made, if someone handled the pages and had a little moisture on their hands, would that dye stay in their hands?

    • @pickypulp
      @pickypulp  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, just a little moisture wont rub off onto their hands, however if the paper is soaked again in water the colours will bleed

    • @pickypulp
      @pickypulp  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I’m not sure but I think probably yes, you could purchase at a specialty craft or baking store? I still suggest just using the cheapest and strongest instant coffee mixed with water for coffee dyed paper

    New to your channel. How would you make pink shades

    • @pickypulp
      @pickypulp  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Queen brand of food colouring I use (in Australia) has a colour called “rose pink” which I use to make pink tones. I dilute with water depending on how light or dark I want the colour. Boiling avocado stones also produces a very light dusty pink dye that is very pretty, although not as vibrant as food colouring, and of course requires effort to collect the stones!

    What is the ratio of food coloring to water?

    • @pickypulp
      @pickypulp  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There is no special ratio - add more or less water depending on the intensity if colour

    How can I get a rich teal blue color???

    • @pickypulp
      @pickypulp  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Try to find a “teal” food dye and use a ratio of more dye to water. I used just a basic “blue” for this project and by adjusting the amount of water i can create lighter or darker colours

    • @linda9918
      @linda9918 4 หลายเดือนก่อน
