    Hello! I’m new to junk journaling. I never thought about using Kool Aid to dye with. Super smart. And the colors are so pretty! I’ll be giving this a try. Thanks!

      Thanks for watching. First, if you can, let your papers air dry. I don't dry my papers in the oven anymore. Watch other videos about Kool Aid dying because there are sooooo many ways to do it. My video was made in 2018. So many new ways to dye paper. Good luck with your adventures. I want to add one more thought. I ironed my papers because I wanted them to glue things on them. Crinkled is lovely but I wanted flat. Have a great time!!

    • @MessyTableStudio
      @MessyTableStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I am glad that worked for you. Just be sure that you don't wash the lace too much or eventually it will cause a lot of the color to wash out. If you are using the lace for journals or for embellishments that will never be washed, hopefully it will take a long time for the colors to fade. If you want a more permanent way to dye buy some Ph Martin India Ink dyes. They can be washed and should last longer. They also have a better variety of colors. Good luck with your dying adventures. It is so much fun!

      I am the kind of person who leaps before I look most of the time so that explains the directions on the packets. I suggest if you use the Kool Aid not to put baking powder or baking soda in the water. Stuff stains just fine without it. Because I live in Texas and dye paper year 'round I don't use the oven anymore. I bought a retractable clothline and put it in my studio and hang my papers on the clothesline. The ceiling fan is always on so I don't use any extra power drying my papers and they are dried in about 20-30 minutes. I am too impatient for letting them dry overnight on the cookie sheets. Hope this helps!

    Very nice, cool husband too! I have leftover KoolAid from fiber dying as well. I’m excited to give paper a go! Years ago my husband had me pour baking soda on aluminum foil and my tarnished silver. When hot water was added the aluminum and baking soda reacted and my silver was clean. I don’t know what happens when these meet up but I love the texture you made!

    • @MessyTableStudio
      @MessyTableStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I am NOT telling him he is cool. lol! I will never live that down. The baking soda trick for silver has been around for many years. My mom used to do that. She hated polishing her good silverware for holidays. Some one is another post said something that I think answered my question in the video about the white powdery stuff I had on the sheet pans all the time. They mentioned pre-sweetened KoolAid. I am wondering how if that is the stuff that was left over and not the baking soda. Could have been a combo of the two things. I have plans to do another video and see what happens. Thanks for watching!

      I wrote a reply and guess did not hit the blue button. I used really warm water so that the crystals would dissolve faster. I did have some left at the end, and just added a wee bit more warm water and then dissolved the rest of the way. I hope you had good luck with your papers.

      gloria Eike Gloria, I baked my papers at 250 degrees and took them out when they were mostly dried. I dry them in the oven because I don't have a lot of space to hang papers in the studio. Plus I am impatient and want to see them done. If you hang dry them, you will not have extra crispy papers like I did. There is a video on TH-cam that talks about the baking soda. I probably should have watched the whole thing before I started. Lol! Dye some papers. It is so interesting how they turn out so differently. Thanks for watching.

    How much baking soda? I use kool aid all the time to dye my yarns. I'm a knitter. So I never use b.soda. hmmmm interesting. Well it says it makes 2 quarts so you add 2 quarts of water to make a half gallon of koolaid. But not that amount to dye with or it will be like the white one that should have come out pink

    • @MessyTableStudio
      @MessyTableStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am a knitter too. After all is said and done, I would not add baking soda. I still can not figure out what purpose it served to do that. I think it was unnecessary. I doubt it set the color and it left a white residue on my paper and my pans. My best advise is to skip it and just use water by itself.

    Do you have to use the oven to dry them? Can outside in the sun work? How long are they in the oven at what temperature?

    • @MessyTableStudio
      @MessyTableStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do not have to use an oven to dry them. I have an expandable clothesline in my craft room and hand papers on it like laundry with clothespin. I have the ceiling fan going and they dry in about 20 to 30 minutes depending on how wet they are. I don't hand drippy saturated papers. You can also buy cheap cookie sheets from a dollar store and just leave the paper to dry on the sheet on their own. That process takes a few days but yields some great marbling on the paper. I would think drying in the sun with a rock on top would work, but just not a super windy day. I had the oven at 250 and stood right over it to try not to cook the paper or have a fire in the oven. I can't tell you how long they were in the oven but it was pretty quick.

    The white filmy stuff comes off the paper I believe like lint maybe? Paper does have rag/cloth component...that is where the pound weight figures in I think. I had three reams of cheap Office Depot copy paper left over from my home office days of legal consulting so i spent like 5 bucks on some pans and a few more on Kool-aid. ....it was fun!
    If i had to go out and buy some i would go 28 lb.
    BTW I dont have a working stove just a toaster oven...let the stacks in the pans dry in a sunny window. Popped them in toaster oven at 270 for a few munutes till they started getting toasty dry and it only took a few minutes and i could sit in a chair lol! I dont have patience to do one sheet at a time roflol!

    • @MessyTableStudio
      @MessyTableStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I cheated with mine when I coffee dyed them. I used my heat gun. I didn't want anymore burned edges. I also used a sponge brush and those Dollar Tree sheet pans. I stacked them staggered and let them dry overnight. If they weren't dry all the way, they got blow dried. Sometimes I took more coffee and dripped it on the dried papers to give them more layers of interest. I didn't consider the lint from lesser quality paper to be an issue.I have upped the quality of my paper from a year ago, but am happy I had the other stuff to play with.

    • @patriciarider5698
      @patriciarider5698 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Messy Table Studio that filmy stuff paper residue washes right off with no problem. I stick my stack of slightly damp papers in toaster oven in less than 5 minutes they all dry and crispy but not burnt. after about 1 minute i can take off the top and bottom cuz they crispy. i guess since it it smaller dries faster...might look for a toaster oven at estate yard sale or thrift store....no sore back lol!

    • @MessyTableStudio
      @MessyTableStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The video is nearly three years old. I still have a pile of the papers and the color seems to have held up very well. I have put wet medium and glues all over the pieces I collaged and they have held up pretty well. It was my first time dying paper and even though I was not wild about the texture, I thought it went pretty well. I would however not dry them in the oven anymore since I have a clothesline in my art room. Almost none of them smell like the flavors I used and that was disappointing. I thought a book that smelled like the fruits would be kind of interesting.

      @MessyTableStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @MessyTableStudio
      @MessyTableStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thilda Hanna Thilda, I did not measure the water. I think it might have been about a cup to a cup and a half of water. I just eye balled it. I had a good time but standing around the oven for three hours is tiring. You have to stay right there and check on the paper because it will catch on fire if you leave it too long. Give one packet a try to see if you like it.

  • @diannew6066

    The instructions are for making kool aid to drink, so it's just add 2 qts of water to one pack of Kool Aid plus 1 cup of sugar. The trick is figuring out how to make dye water for paper - a whole 'nother thang, LOL. Love your colors - they turned out great. I can't imagine why someone else had said to use baking soda though. It's an alkalai and shouldn't bubble, so since it did, that means the kool aid powder is a bit acidic. Maybe that's the reason - to take any of the acidity out of the paper to keep it from falling apart in 50 years or something, lol.

    Vickie I’m assuming what happened is the lemon lime koolaid had citric acid in it and it reacted with the baking soda. When you make bath bombs that’s what is used to make them frizz. • @MessyTableStudio
      @MessyTableStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daisy, I was disappointed in the yellow so I did add food color to "beef" up the color. I have not done strictly food dyes but others have and they turn out very nicely. I might have to do a video on that in the future. I think that if you want vivid color I would do with food dyes first. Kool Aid does pastel looking color depending on the ratio of water and mix you use. Good luck with the dying. It turns out so differently every time!
