    I have 2 more full videos coming on this project! One for the assembly, and one for the electronics and control software. I'll include the basic info and bill of materials (BOM)..... but stay tuned for the other videos as I'll go into more detail on both topics and a complete BOM list. This rig is easy to assemble, but it will take you a while to print.
    It's pretty amazing what you can do with an idea in today's world
    - DIW
    I'll provide all the links to the items I used in the future videos as well as my website, but don't worry....by the time you download the files and drop them in your slicer, you'll find you have about 2 weeks of printing ahead of you.
    Here's the basic BOM I used:
    ---ELECTRONICS---
    * Raspberry pi 3 (or 4) - amzn.to/2ILRKnN
    * Arduino mega 2560 -amzn.to/3f4oyEj
    * 6 axis CNC shield - www.tindie.com...
    * Stepper drivers (TMC2208 for quiet motor operation) - amzn.to/3kEzU31
    * DC-DC buck convertor 5V - amzn.to/35Bjmo1
    * LED volt gauge (OPTIONAL) - ebay
    * Misc. rocker switches (OPTIONAL) - amzn.to/338wakv
    * Camera DC-DC convertor (OPTIONAL) -
    * Various connectors and CAT5e "stranded" wire
    * Electrical slip rings (6 wire ) - amzn.to/3lD5jnz
    * Electrical slip rings (12 wire ) - amzn.to/2UBfYTU
    * Electrical slip rings (24 wire ) - amzn.to/3faAcxh
    * NEMA 17 gearhead stepper motors QTY 2 - amzn.to/390jxeS
    * NEMA 17 stepper motors QTY - 1 - amzn.to/2UKPdwm
    * NEMA 8 gearhead stepper motors - www.omc-steppe...
    * 3 cell lipo batteries (5000mh) - (OPTIONAL) - amzn.to/2IJJbcX
    ---HARDWARE---
    * 1" OD anodized aluminum tubing
    * 3/4" OD anodized aluminum tubing
    * 3" x 3" solid metal round blank (built-in counter-weight) Don't worry if you can't find this item. I've designed a 3d printed container that replaces that item. You can fill it with commonly sourced lead (think scuba weight bags) What's your next excuse for not making one? :)
    * Various length bolts, washers, and nuts (2mm - 3mm - 5mm - 8mm)
    * Slot channel style t-nuts (their slim and lightweight) - amzn.to/2IPYSPL
    * 16 Teeth 8mm Bore Motor Metal Gear QTY 2 - amzn.to/3nyGl9M
    * Speaker Tripod Stand - amzn.to/2UBDrEJ
    ---Control Solutions---

    Can't wait to start building it, have a very specific application for it in mind, would require it to be bolted to the ceiling though, shouldn't be a problem though i suppose since it is balanced

    • @DoItWhenever
      @DoItWhenever  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ceiling Mount might actually be tricky... Everything is balanced using that integrated counterweight but the turret section rides on top of the base plate, turning that upside down might add a few challenges

    • @Tarex_
      @Tarex_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DoItWhenever The forces if they balance out can be neglected, the turret would need kto be turned to a captive plate, so it hangs off the base, a lazy susan bearing is inside anyway right? Would then get sandwiched instead of them being stacked, will be tackled when i get there in some version of near future

    • @DoItWhenever
      @DoItWhenever  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Tarex_ yeah there's a 3D printed lazy Susan bearing in the center.. and technically everything is captive... But there's quite a bit of weight with the camera, counterweight, and all the parts... I have 3D printed a very thin nylon spacer to help with friction.... If you hang it upside down you might have more friction or binding on that lazy Susan bearing.... In the current setup all that weight is distributed onto the base and by riding on that nylon spacer. There's been other people that asked about a ceiling mounted version.... I guess that could be another video in the future :)

    • @Tarex_
      @Tarex_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DoItWhenever a suggestion in case you do research the option at some point, igus (yes the ones from the bearings) actually sell the drylin and other materials as filament and they are rated for industrial applications and are more specific than nylon, they can also produce custom parts, afaik they are also present in the US, in case they are not, I'll gladly try and get a roll of the filament shipped to you from germany

    • @Rob_65
      @Rob_65 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Tarex_ technically it is not a real lazy susan but a crossed roller slewing bearing. The difference is that a lazy susan is using bearing balls (or often even just glass marbles) and gravity keeps it all in place. The slew bearing is a combination of two roller bearings in a 90 degree angle. The inner race of the bearing is adjustable to remove/reduce any play in the bearing. This is not the case in this 3D printed construction though and the construction indeed looks more like a lazy susan.
      But with a bit of tweaking of the roller pins the construction could behave more or less like a slewing bearing.
      Needless to say that I am still not done tweaking 😳

      I can't find my lav at the moment so all the recording was done using the internal mic... It actually works pretty well but it did pick up my computer fan noise, I tried to EQ it out... And it sounded normal while editing.... And then it went live and I noticed a hissing.... Probably compounded by my EQing efforts :( But overall it's pretty good.

      yes and no. 1. where i film has no wi-fi or plugs so can i run ugs on a pi with windows
    2. is there a way to have a bunch of presets in ugs that i can click on to move the crane to that preset
    3. i am planing to have an on deck control module using 2 pi's (one for recording and one for controlling the robot) i would like to have the module be stationary but still like the robot to rotate also i will be using the atem mini pro cam switcher which uses hdmi so could i use wireless hdmi

    Question 1/ Do you have other channels?
    Question 2/ your videos, especially this one, gives us a glimpse of your other projects that you must share (please).
    Request - your workshop looks small but you seem to have the set up we all want. How about a video explaining your setup and your background.
    You’ve got it, embrace it, if possible go full time.

      Q1 - No other channels .....yet
      Q2 - definitely.... this project started as an idea to film everything else, but its become quite the project and a build-log in itself
      Q3 - I'd love to film and show everything I work on.... but a man's gotta eat too :)
      Thanks for the motivation!

    Hey, I'm curious how reliable you find the focus control on the lumix? my canon 80d has this annoying behavior that the focus steps vary depending on the speed of rotating the focus ring. I found it basically impossible to get consistent focus pull results on my setup. Still relying on the auto-focus. which does ok but is sometimes ruins shots.

    • @DoItWhenever
      @DoItWhenever  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the exact problem I have with this camera... The focus control is nonlinear.... I was super excited the first day this thing worked and then irritated an hour after that... The focus control works if you're not moving any other axis.. like if you're setting up a headshot.... I actually have a plan to take advantage of that extra motor

    • @MakerGeek
      @MakerGeek 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DoItWhenever Ha, ok well I guess I'm glad it's not just me. But it does suck. I even tried connecting the canon API over usb to control it which does expose a large step and small step command in each direction. But it was also totally flakey and would just drop commands. Given the auto focus works pretty well it was annoying to find manual control so non predictable.

    However I feel like you’re not properly utilizing this to grow your channel.
    Stuff made here is insane because he makes great videos about new projects roughly once a month.
    We’re getting videos from you every 5 months about the same project, and now you’re starting new projects?
    I get that video editing is not the most fun part of the process, but if you would do easy to make update videos twice a month, your channel would grow exponentially
