SIBIU, ROMANIA - Sibiu is known as a gastronomy capital of Romania, and so I was excited to explore this historical city in Transylvania, and mainly to eat some street food and at a traditional Romanian restaurant. #Romania #mici #Sibiu
Huge thank you to Nassim ( / romania_foodtours ) and Cristian ( / cristian_tudor_microgr... ) for setting up this incredible trip.
Geo Sib - Easily the most widely available and loved Romanian street food is Mititei / Mici, unique little balls of meat, mixed with spices and grilled over charcoal. This is the place to eat mici in Sibiu, in the morning on the outskirts of the market. Their mici was made from minced veal, lots of salt, and light seasoning. They were so incredibly good, and so incredibly bouncy. Price - 30 RON ($6.92) for 6, so each mici costs $1.15.
Next we continued walking around and exploring the historical center of Sibiu, drinking some coffee, and climbing up the watch tower for a view of the city. Also a highlight for me was stumbling into a small farmers market at the church and meeting an amazing grandmother famous for her pickles. All her different pickles were fantastic.
Jules Bistro - Next they had arranged for us to have a quick meal at Jules Bistro, a modern take on Romanian food. It was pretty good, and the setting was beautiful.
Crama Sibiul Vechi - But I was most interested in a traditional Romanian Transylvanian meal at Crama Sibiul Vechi, one of the best restaurants in Sibiu. The food was fantastic, and I loved the setting in an old basement with friendly staff. Total price - 109 RON ($25.15)
That completes this Romanian food tour of Sibiu - much more food to come!

My Romanian 1st floor neighbor used to make steamed lamb (cooked almost 10 hrs) with cabbage and yogurt- garlic. Of course with red wine. Out of this world.

At risk of invoking 'furie românilor' ('the fury of the Romanians'), I have to admit that I rather prefer the South Slavic version (ćevape/kebapče) ... maybe it's something with the seasoning? I tend to use grated onions in mine, along with salt and pepper ... and a wee bit of cumin and mustard.

thank you for the kind words. If you ever visit a romanian home, regardless where they live, if they dont feed you there's something very wrong with them. Dont know why, but romanians always get excited when it comes to sharing food, traditions and culture with other people. So this whole cultural appropriation thing makes no sense for us. It really makes us happy to share our culture and to see others carrying something onwards with them

I am American Romanian. I grew up on this food. My mouth is watering. My mom never cooked with Lamb though. I have visited my family in Sibiu once, and can't wait to go back! Even the coffee in Romania taste so much better than coffee in America. 😀

I feel in love with mici the first bite along with that warm hearty bread plus a sip of a lemon ginger drink. Romania has been one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited and i would gladly go back to. I’ve been there for a business trip and it occupied a special place in my heart. Warm, loving people too. I met good friends and coworkers there.
I miss Romanian food. Left when I was 6. But mom continued cooking till almost the day she died. The soups, the spreads, everything. The mici are out of this world. Better than any sausage I've ever had anywhere. Reminds me of summer fun in the country visiting my godparents.
Man you brought me back in a fraction of a second, I left Romania twenty five years ago and you just pool me right back to my childhood days. Thank you Mark for visiting Romania and for the wonderful videos.

Mark, next time when you want to visit Romania, if you haven't been yet in Bucovina, a beautiful region of our Country, try it in winter, to have the whole pack for Christmas. But it is also amazing in the summer. Go for Vatra Dornei, Dorohoi, etc. And from there you can continue to the beautiful Country of Maramureș 🤗🤗🤗
