Interesting, insightful lecture! But very poor video taking - Dr Konnikova, no doubt went through a lot of trouble to add the slides to her lecture and the videographer was not savvy enough to capture the slides that she's directing our attention to. If anyone else has the lecture with the slides please add link.

Ok, i realy need to ask u, i'm reading the book (page 92) and actually i haven't learn anything related deduction or thing like that, just some teories and quotes about the book and different psychologist. When the book starts teaching skills, or how to develop yout abilities?
Ant Ior Hang on, this will be long. Well actually I read it a while ago so I cannot specifically tell where it begins to teach the ''important stuff'' and now the deduction has become sorta like second nature for me (which does not mean it was easy) and believe with steady practice, it will work. The way this book presents the advice, in my opinion, is as if you have to realize and adapt the content to yourself rather than telling you ''do this or do that''. She teaches you the whole deduction process from zero, and in order, that is: attention (learn to always be in the present moment), set a goal in your mind (e.g. ''why did my friend was late for work, if he is always on time''?) observation (take on whatever details important for what you want to know, because for example, is not important to look at your friend's hair gel if you want to know why he is late), theorize (from those facts you know are important, bring as much theories as possible) and finally come up with the most logical explanation possible following the former steps, or as Sherlock himself said, ''when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, although unlikely, must be the truth.''.
WSBZ01 even me man this book is the best!! have you read the definitive book of body language and thinking, fast and slow? these books are also good to be a mentalist or Holmes (whatever you want to be called)
I have the book myself too, I really learned a lot with it and love it. Most of the important theory and terms I have it implanted in my head haha. All I need is to practice a lot more. Btw very cool to know people who also have read the book and love this.
In this book, Maria unpacked the mental strategies that lead to clearer thinking and deeper insights. She draws on 21st-century neuroscience and psychology to “illuminate Holmes’ most fascinating cases.” She writes at length on the scientific method of the mind, the brain attic, the art of observation, imagination, deduction and the importance of self-knowledge.
For me, this book is not easy to read (I didn’t read this book thru like most of my other books. I paused for about 3 months) but since my fascinated for Sherlock Holmes, fictional character created by Author Conan Doyle, is greater than the task of finishing this book, I finally did it. I read 'The Power of Habit' by Charles Duhigg and some parts of Daniel Kahneman’s 'Thinking, Fast and Slow' before and I found these books are almost similar to ‘Mastermind’ (or ‘Mastermind’ is actually similar with these other books). Some readers fairly commented that this book would be much better if she used a real character instead of a fictional character. I agree and disagree. I refuse to comment further. I suggest you watch Konnikova’s talks first on TH-cam :)

before I read this book, I have applied it, this book complements the answer I did, the attic is just a term, you can imagine any room, hotel, house. I imagine Dream house is in my head and it functions as my brain, I have a room, a library, whatever I want to have, I store every information and prepare a special room, when I am in university, I read a book for every study I take, and I always prepare a special room in my dream house, in the real world I read a book and in my imagination I'm sitting in that room while writing what I read, after I finished I closed the book in detail, and got out of the dream house, then I realized and was active In the real world, it seems impossible, when I take an exam, I have information in my head that I put in detail, and it answers my questions during the exam, and I pass with the best marks.
Would it have killed the cameraman to pan it back so we can see the slides and images?? And judging by everyone's comments, I'm glas to know that I wasn't the only one to come up with an eagle ;)

She's very attractive, some people say she's socially awkward but I think it's kind of... interesting lol. A good speaker I think she does an pretty good job though her speaking range and power isn't that strong as others, agreed. All in all a smart woman

It was easy to tell how she did it. If u multiply a number by 9 the sum of the two letter digit will always be nine therefore subtracting 5 will get 4. This number corresponds with d in the alphabet. Most country’s that start with d have e as the second letter. This can make clear that most people will pick elephant.
One more thing I noticed is the color temperature changes during the presentation and is very distracting. It is cool then it gets very "warm"
The Google effect happened to me with my lessons at school in the exams I remember my copy book: its color, its details, the page, and the exact number of lines written in it but not the information I want to remember

So something about the mind attic that she didn't fully get into. You can take the information almost literally by imagining a home, hotel, attic, room, whatever and filling it with items that stand for things you want to remember.
Here's my process: 1) I meditate for an amount of time that will allow me to focus fully on my thoughts 2) then imagine a home (it's the same home every time, but I don't want to overly describe everything for you guys) 3) I imagine myself walking into this home 4) immediately I'm greeted by a hallway with doors on each side. each door represents a different area of study. I have a door that looks like a galaxy for cosmology, I have a fine wooded door with a brass knob for history, I have a door that has Dr. [my name] on a plaque for a psychology room, etc.. 5) inside every room I have furniture and little knick knacks that I interact with and continue to build the story behind them. For example, I have a night stand in my psychology room that has different action figures being subjected to smoke. This reminds me of the psychology of crowd behavior and each action figure has a story (scholarly article) tied to it. This helps me practice what I know and recall information faster. 6) when I'm done visiting the rooms I imagine myself leaving then I wake up from my meditation.
Do this once a day and you'll be able to have a tool for storing information. I have a few friends that do this too and they're working on their second and third homes. It's not only useful, but if you have a strong enough imagination it becomes pretty fun going into this house that becomes to feel so real.

It’s so irritating that these camera people can’t show the onscreen slide presentations accompanying the talk.
I used to operate a one man control room as student, while in university, where we would broadcast our engineering lectures remotely. I had two remote controlled cameras, aimed at the professor and the board. I always made sure that everything was viewable. How did I do that? By doing my job, being present and remembering that my responsibility was to the remote viewers. It’s not difficult, it just means not being lazy and doing the job I was hired to do.
Sorry I speak Spanish and it's a little difficult to me to understand sometimes English, I did not understand very good the thing about multitasking, the multitasking is bad?

31:55 "....this is quite the 3 pipe problem....." Made me wonder what do today's brainy detectives do. I think crime scene inspection, as soon as possible, would ADD to the overall crime solution success, doesn't it? Both, contemplation "mindfulness" (3 pipe long) time, PLUS crime scene investigation, I concluded a modern detective who is a public servant part of a police force will obviously follow today's evolved detective procedures. But in their own detective lives, I do think this "mindfulness" (3 pipe) time for a detective, also would be a great piece of advice. But, as a regular citizen, how to amp up everyone's brain who is in a public service job being paid to do public service jobs, I applaud all help to help our "government" workers and paid city workers who do service to us all! Great talk.

+Chuck Beatty For Sherlock, like myself, opiates and their like serve multiple purposes. In this case, it allows us to think esoterically (in an abstract manner that would be impossible sober) and approach the problem from angles unconsidered. It also helps us relax, which is normally IMPOSSIBLE. Imagine having to analyze everything. It's not something Sherlock turns on... it's something he desperately tries to turn off... and is only successful through drugs.
+Wesley Matulis BTW, I'm recovering and not supporting drug use... Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lived in a different time and place where it was acceptable to do drugs, as long as it was behind closed doors and didn't affect other people. Actually, that was the Victorian attitude on most things.
I think there is a little contradiction between the multitasking fact and the pipe mediation. First she said, don't be multitasking focus on the thing you're doing so you learn from the moment and be happier and the she said when your doing something your doing well as a routine then you can let your mind expand in that time and think about everything you like. It would be contra productive to the fact she told first.

I couldn't think of a country beginning with D, not in the English language off the top of my head, so I said Deutschland, not Denmark, and the second letter is E, which is for Elephant too.....I think if you multiply *any* single digit number by nine, the digits will add up to nine? So if you subtract five you will always get four, and D is the fourth letter of the alphabet. I gave up listening to this video at 3 minutes and 23 seconds in. I don't mind silly games as an opener, but something with a bit more wow factor than that please, that fell flat because I was taught the magic of the nine times table when I was about five years old.

Deeply insight video, but I agree that the cameraman did a very poor job with the slides. Though if he was distracted by her angelic beauty, I don't blame him. I just spent the last hour looking into the eyes of heaven, and I deduce that she is married (judging from the ring that gleamed off artificial lighting), very intelligent and went to college, well-rehearsed in public speaking (there were no ummms in her speech), a type A personality, came from a middle-class family (perhaps the East Coast? Judging from her refined character and speech?) and goes the extra mile. I found the way she crinkles her nose when she laughs very cute. She definitely wanted to do well at this presentation. For example, she decked herself out with accessories on her wrist, neck and ears. However, I found the earrings a particularly peculiar choice considering that her hair covers her ears most of the time. It was no easy feat discovering if this earth angel wore earrings, but after spending the greater part of the video watching closely, I realized that she had chosen to wear them. Why? Was it conscious or unconscious decision? Contrary to my hypothesis, however, when you consider the fact that she wears a necklace and a silver wristwatch and that she is going to give a presentation, it is not surprising that she made this choice. How are the earrings relevant? I think it says something about her character. That Maria Konnikova-a human diamond-lucky man whoever married her-cared about this presentation and likely puts forth extra effort in the things she does. She sounds like a solid author that I look forward to visiting in the future.

Matt Gallus I'd say she's also used to sitting at a computer quite often (not sure if for her job or if she has a blog or something) from her posture. She hasn't had a haircut in a while (not sure how that ties into anything...). I also agree with what you said about her caring about the presentation--she was very enthusiastic and gesticulated with her hands a lot. I think what you said about the earrings was quite interesting.

Matt Gallus your earing thing is quite interesting but I think you're wrong about her being regular public speaker as her body posture says otherwise though it might be due to spending long time on computer as she is author I believe it's the otherwise as she keeps tilting her head in right side and expressions are one of those socially awkward people. And when she talked about how her father used to read her Sherlock when she opened that subject which made her legs move to make a cross which indicates more about how she is socially awkward and hence not a regular at public speeches. But it's just my guess feel free to correct me.

Before I even watch this, let me comment about this idea of a mind attic, and other tools we use.
I read a lot of books, and I see tons of different authors talk about similar ideas but describe them differently, using different jargon. This is inefficient, and we need standards. Is there a place where all of these ideas and information are compiled so that I'm not wasting my resources and memory inter-linking related ideas? Our minds are limited, and we need to eject extraneous information so that we aren't spinning our wheels, so that we can actually put these ideas to use without the information overload of this era.
I already see this happening all over the place. Lots of effort has been put in over the years by websites on the internet to help streamline information so that it's not so disjointed. I guess ideas that are a bit more innovative just need some time to be integrated.

+arande3 Haha it's funny now that I've watched it, the actual idea is similar to what I'm saying, but it's focused on the self. So instead of changing our environment, it's more about how we choose to perceive our environment. Both approaches are important and should be utilized.

You frame people's responses to each respective set of options for Bill and Linda by your tone of voice when introducing option 1 and then saying "Is it likely, no...probably not." I read "Thinking Fast and Slow" and read/underwent the experiment. But the book didn't impart a prejudicial tone of voice; and I changed my answer half way through the first example. I recommend that you have a neutral tone of voice and don't tell them what to think afterwards. Not an important note honestly; it was just annoying.
