In this book, Maria unpacked the mental strategies that lead to clearer thinking and deeper insights. She draws on 21st-century neuroscience and psychology to “illuminate Holmes’ most fascinating cases.” She writes at length on the scientific method of the mind, the brain attic, the art of observation, imagination, deduction and the importance of self-knowledge. For me, this book is not easy to read (I didn’t read this book thru like most of my other books. I paused for about 3 months) but since my fascinated for Sherlock Holmes, fictional character created by Author Conan Doyle, is greater than the task of finishing this book, I finally did it. I read 'The Power of Habit' by Charles Duhigg and some parts of Daniel Kahneman’s 'Thinking, Fast and Slow' before and I found these books are almost similar to ‘Mastermind’ (or ‘Mastermind’ is actually similar with these other books). Some readers fairly commented that this book would be much better if she used a real character instead of a fictional character. I agree and disagree. I refuse to comment further. I suggest you watch Konnikova’s talks first on TH-cam :) To read my review & short summary on Maria Konnikova's Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes (2013), CLICK HERE: www.richardangelus.me/2018/08/mastermind-how-to-think-like-sherlock.html?m=1
I'm reading her book, and I'm definitely very interested...I've never really read a psychological self-help book before, but the idea of changing and optimizing the the way we think to the immense caliber of someone like Holmes, is a very powerful idea....does it work? Will I succeed? I cannot say, but I'm definitely going to try.
I don't think she's full of herself. I think she just has trouble communicating with people. That's why she over emphasizes her facial expressions and tends to stutter after asked questions. It comes off as snobbish because it feels like she's talking to you like your an idiot but its just her way of trying to explain something
You're not your. Last sentence second word in that sentence forty-sixth word in the entire comment. Unless you count the oreosis 9 months ago, Then it would be the fiftieth word.
Maria is not snobbish at all. She is a great communicator. Her points are well made and important. She can improve (excuse me, Maria, for the obligatory criticism) by eliminating the now ubiquitous upspeak and vocal fry.
Nice video! If you're interested in learning more about body language, and what it takes to be a person like Sherlock Holmes, if you want, just pop over to my channel for some tips and advice!
I actually use music as a way to focus myself, I have a list of certain music on itunes and youtube that plays when i need to focus. I have at times thought about getting a violin as well haha.
Necessity is the mother of invention. Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character. A real Holmes would looks something like a sociopath. Trauma is the necessary treatment from which symptoms create the type of mind that makes one so conscious.
IhasMetal It's funny cos i got the (if not the best) one of the best sound equipment in the world and I got absolutely no problem turning the volume up manually but I was thinking maybe it's time for some of these so-called professionals to make videos a bit LESS amateur and then post it on the internet which is a matter that ***** should take it into consideration and not you my friend ;)
@@arsh2522 consider me late towards responding to such a comment but your words seemingly contradict themselves seeing as how you called him the "most dumbest person" particularly because of him apparantly forgetting his own name, might I ask where in the blazing hell you got this information from? "Gogo1 year ago sadly more people will be interested in your appearance than in the content of your message." how do you think she got interested in sherlock holmes? the movie and the bbc series. she even brings them up.
1: Holmes is NOT a man, but a figure CREATED by a man. Therefore he's a symbol of something else. Fex. Watson = the heart, Holmes = brain, together = ACD (the author) 2: Meditation every day is as good for the mind as water and oxigen is for the body. 3: “The ability to observe without evaluating is the highest form of intelligence.” Jiddu Krishnamurti. That's what SH does. Basics in Non Violent Communication. Turns your world around to think like that - and very healthy too. Maria is very good at explaining why we need like a conspiracy theory expert to connect the dots in our minds.
But basically sherlock holmes was inspired in real life people and his name is Dr. joseph Bell.He can determine what the person last do and their feelings of their patients ( He is surgeon ).That's Dr. Joseph Bell use the observation and logical reasoning when the that time is technology (Lie Detector,etc,..) and techniques( like non-verbal cues ) doesn't exist.Sorry for my english.
Iraq, not Afghanistan. Also, it is "Iraq or Afghanistan?" Not, "Afghanistan I presume." Not to discredit your point. You do have a very good point though, I simply have a nasty habit of correcting every mistake I see.
katy o'brian It is indeed "Iraq or Afghanistan?" in Sherlock, episode 1: A study in pink. However, in the novel A study in Scarlet it is "You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive." which can easily be mixed up.
katy o'brian She refers to the book, not the shitty contemporary television show that grossly misrepresents him. Sorry, I have a nasty habit of correcting stupid cunts.
You're not a good writer either. You say Conan Doyle was not a good writer. Then you say 'Sherlock Holmes' was "the only digestible series of his that I have read", implying he has OTHER digestible series, therefore contradicting your opinion that he's not a good writer. Must try harder.
No, I am saying that, of all the series of his that I have read (3 and a few one-offs), Sherlock was the only digestible one. He may have others that no one has heard of.
I think the reason she thinks Sherlock had made Watson essential is wrong. Retracing steps with Sherlock's memory would not be a big deal and Watson was not the reason for being able to do that. I think she has tried to make it unnecessarily emotionalized which I did find odd. I wonder what the reason might be. The focus on the personal friendship was frankly speaking irrelevant in this regard.
Rajat Roy Sherlock's mind thinks fast and due to continuous case solving his mind has got way more faster at this stuff till the level where he intuitively says the solution and what Watson does is ask him how did he reach to this conclusion which makes Sherlock makes Sherlock say the simplified version of answer which his mind came up with. And to simplify the data Sherlock has to rethink the whole situation again. It's easy for Sherlock to rethink with his memory but what Watson does is to promote him into doing it and come with a simpler explanation of it.
You realize that you are also a fictional person? We are all simply constructions of the mind shown through our sensory perceptions. Sorry if I bursted anyones reality bubble.
I love videos from Maria Konnikova because I'm a Great fan of Sherlock Holmes.

I love how she compares Holmes to Hugh Lorie in the medical drama "House". Holmes = House, Watson = Wilson.
This gave me major johnlock feels and this was immensely interesting :)

That's only in the show, she's referring to the book
aaaah thank you :)
I got your point,Watson.
Here's an idea!...How about turning the volume UP?!!!

The BBC Sherlock with benedict (xD) he does has his own mobile and he's always texting with it.
Can u summarize on how to think like Sherlock Holmes
Cameron Wright, for real.
Holmes totally might use Wikipedia, he'd just be skeptical of its content, just as any other source.
"Gogo1 year ago
sadly more people will be interested in your appearance than in the content of your message."
how do you think she got interested in sherlock holmes?
the movie and the bbc series. she even brings them up.
Perhaps both?
I Love you! This is great!
She is sooooooooo attractive....

very well said

She really likes Sherlock Holmes doesn't she :P
So basically, I'll never be as smart as Sherlock
Hazhazlou Yup.
You can always expand you mind, even to the point of a fictional genius. never say never.
Iraq, not Afghanistan. Also, it is "Iraq or Afghanistan?" Not, "Afghanistan I presume."

katy o'brian She refers to the book, not the shitty contemporary television show that grossly misrepresents him. Sorry, I have a nasty habit of correcting stupid cunts.
I liked Sherlock Holmes before it was cool. I watched the 1980's/1990's series and read the books long before that 2010 release of Sherlock.
I think you should watch detective Conan.....it about Holmes aperantice
Sherlock was cool since 100 years ago.
+Hipster Yoda ™ tired joke
So do you won't cookie.
I was reading, writing and watching this video at the same time. (Accidentally, I gave a positive vote to a stupid comment.)
Sherlock Holmes was never a real person but was based off Dr Joseph Bell
Me too...
she looks like Bradley Cooper...
Conan Doyle was honestly not a good writer. Sherlock Holmes was the only digestible series of his that I have read.
i didnt know he wrote any other series'
Seriously?

Ok. I knew what you meant. Was just in a pedantic mood ;)
Dont get noticed if you want to be a detective
I'll make you give birth to my seed
RBVM that’s awkward
Be an intp
Honey M, I can verify.
This whole thing is just elementary. I deduced this while smoking my pipe.
xD
no she isn't

Rajat Roy stfu ur brain is dull.
You have made that obvious haven't you?
Rajat Roy yes
