@Tripleblade 82 and Sil made it worse by showing them a picture of Johnny and Tony together! Doubt it would actually be the old guys though, maybe the other Chris.
Derek Johnson Maybe, but I'm pretty sure he knew Johnny wouldn't compromise. He just wanted to seem reasonable in Carmine's eyes while Johnny looks completely unreasonable and is in a much weaker position.
Vince Curatola (Johnny Sack) portrayal was excellent. I don't think he was even nominated for any acting awards but for couple of seasons he was one of the best actors on TV.
Tony would have been a great boss if he didn't get his damn emotions get to him all the time. He always had great ideas for scams and making money but let his emotions let him make his decisions too many times.
Yeah, I'm sure YOU would've done whatever it took. It's a TV show, and like you should be talking. You wouldn't have the balls to be a "mob boss", just an incompetent idiot.
Agreed. He had a self-destructive streak, too. How many of his own people did he end up killing or have killed? Hell, there was a moment when he nearly decided to kill Paulie.
Tony was a great boss. But you’re right, he knew his unharnessed impulses were his downfall. I don’t know it was so much emotion but more just impulse.
The way Tony subtly like, shrugs his shoulders up almost propping them up when Junior says ‘My nephews right!’ - furthering in small ass real life details that Tony wants June to accept him and love him and needs his affection and approval. So subtle, nuanced, brilliant. Fuck
Carmine Sr is portrayed in the likes of the greart Dons of the late 20th century: Tony Accardo, Angelo Bruno, Carlo Gambino, Tony Genovese. Old school mafioso who were low key but exceptionally intelligent and rational. Their actions and motives are driven by what's best for business. There any ability is to command respect but still be able to instill fear. This is brilliant casting by David Chase. Tony lip was phenomenal
EndlessFunctionality the subtle jabs at the mafia's moral code are so classy. then they went on on to comparing their rule bending to the catholic church.
You to got give it up to Johnny. He could have served Paulie up to Tony and got the ok to clip Ralph. He might have been playing Paulie for information but he was at least loyal.
He wasnt loyal to paulie. Paulie would of given him information about other future business it only would cost John a small amount of money toward paulie to get it.Buying him dinner or some gifts or something small. Telling on Paulie not only would end that but if Paulie doesnt get killed he might seek to kill John for ratting on him. Johnny looked to take advantage of paulie. Johnny was loyal to himself. That Paulie never tried to kill Johnny or had someone else kill Johnny was shocking to me.
I've seen hundreds of Sopranos scenes on youtube, each one is better than the last. I just wish they could just start a new mafia show with a new family with these types of actors.
Tee Vee Shows like these only come around every few decades. I mean how rare is it to have several actors from Goodfellas and David Chase's excellent writing combine to make this masterpiece? Doubt we'll ever see a mafia show on this scale ever again.
Johnny made a huge mistake in making it known that he knew about the joke and wanted Ralph dead. All he had to do was sit on the knowledge, wait one or two years for everyone to forget about the joke and pretend to still be Ralph's friend in the meantime. Then he could have hired an outside hitman like the Japanese guy he contracted (and called off last minute), make Ralph disappear and leave everyone confused as to who was responsible. No one would point the finger at Johnny since him and Ralph were on good terms. There's an old Corsican proverb: "If you want revenge and you act within 20 years, you're acting in haste". Obviously in this case, Johnny didn't have to wait 20 years. But making it widely known that he hated Ralph's guts pretty much meant that even if Ralph was killed years later there would still be strong suspicion that he was behind it.
Best sit down ever from this series. Johnny Sack keeps hitting a wall, and Tony and Sil know it's true, and if Johnny calls their bluff, they at least find out who talked. That would have been the end of Paulie Walnuts and Ralphie in one fell swoop.
Johnny sack needs to understand that Ralph cifaretto is a made guy. And you can't touch a made guy. Unless you have a good reason. And Ralph making fun of his wife is not a good reason.
The breakdown of the dynamics leading to Carmine's wise judgement: Johnny would have gotten Carmine's approval of whacking Ralph, if he would have exposed his source, so the source could be confronted in order to make sure the rumor is 100% right. Carmine, the wiser one here, knew damn well Johnny will not reveal his source - that would mean Johnny showing he's undermining Tony's crew, badly. And of course would mean the end of Pauly. So by Carmine giving the look to Johnny when Tony asks to reveal the source - Carmine makes sure there won't be a hit. All in all, Carmine's final word is 100% correct - without exposing the source, a hit cannot be sanctioned on a made guy based on anonymous tip, therefore, the best Johnny Sac' can ask for is a *very* nice $$ compensation, and "to get the fuck over it". Being that Johnny not only did not thank his Boss for his wise judgment, he also stormed out of the meeting, showed serious disrespect, and after badly hitting a member of Ralph's crew, positioned himself as a loose canon, one that no one knows what to expect of - Not the best asset in times when millions of $$ are at stake. The only thing left in Carmine toolbag is to sanction a hit on Johnny.
I always like how Carmine goes from "It was an off-color remark" when John tells him to "A horrible insult was made against Jenny" when he's trying to get as much as he can out of Tony and Junior.
Because Junior and Tony started changing the subject and getting off topic about someone talking out of turn in their family to john. He said that to basically say "shut the fuck up it doesnt matter, now lets get on with the reason why were even having this meeting in the first place I got my daughter coming over with the baby I don't have time for this shit". haha.
San like dude above me said. It had nothing to do with John feeling any compassion for Paulie. He worked Paulie for info about what Tony was doing. Paulie was such a schmuck Johnny told him Carmine asked about him. When Paulie runs into Carmine he doesn’t have a clue who he is. Which is kind of unbelievable. As long as Paulies been working for the Aprile/Soprano family, Carmine would have known who he was.
watching this again, i realized something interesting. john loved and respected his wife more than anybody else on the show but he would not give up paulie the rat when tony asked him who said it. he valued a rat in tony's family more than his wife's honor and we all know he turned rat too when he was arrested and admitted about his involvement with the mob. as old school and as respected as he was turns out he was motivated by self interest just like the rest of the mobsters edit: call paulie what you like, he gave john information about certain things in his mob family which is a big nono. john preferred to keep paulie as his informant and even if he did give him up and paulie would deny it, that would destroy paulie's trust with tony (or even worse he could end up dead, remember his boat trip with tony?) so either way john would be in a lose lose scenario. john's allocution was strange as well, he admits being part of the mob but isn't required to give anybody up? everybody knows mafia exists so what would be the point of him just acknowledging that publicly and again, without implicating anybody else? even so, this was a risky move by john which could easily get him clipped because if the mobsters know john is talking to the fbi, why would they take any chances with what he could tell them? rat or no rat, what he did angered the mob a lot and a lot of them lost their respect for him
I never saw John's allocution as a selfish act. First off, I wouldn't eqaute it with turning rat. He didn't implicate anyone but himself. And the only reason he admitted to anything was to bank some good will with the Feds so they'd throw his wife some scraps to live on.
Paulie would never have admitted to ratting--recall he denied it years later with Tony on the boat. Tony and John realize there's no way to openly corroborate what was said, only an implicit admission via a "tax". Tony realized from the beginning it could be squashed by denying it but Ralph messed that up.
Your definition of a rat is pretty loose, first what Paulie did couldn't be put on the same level as talking to the FBI, he's a big mouth who was angry at Ralph and decided to get some revenge on him by telling Johny Sack about the joke, that ended up causing too much trouble for Tony and sure if he found out about it he would have clipped him, but you can't put it on the same level as ratting. Secondly Johny Sack couldn't be also considered a rat, I think the Mafia is more than capable of killing him in prison if he ratted. He just admited to working with the Mob without naming anyone, sure they might finish him if he ever got out of prison but he wasn't a rat, his conversation with his (jewish) lawyer when he tells him that flipping is like turning into a Nazi for that lawyer shows that atleast he didn't consider himself a rat. Bottom line is just because an action can get you killed by the mob's "high standards", it doesn't necessarilly mean that that said action is in anyway related to ratting.
p1t For the second time,Johnny Sack didn't rat.He admitted he was a mobster but he didn't name a single one of his fellow mobsters. Also he did that mainly so his family could be financially secure.

@Tripleblade 82 and Sil made it worse by showing them a picture of Johnny and Tony together! Doubt it would actually be the old guys though, maybe the other Chris.
@Tripleblade 82 pretty sure they still would of got it done
Carmine was the one character that was absolutely NOT fucked with.
The egg salad did and it won
Joe jo Oooooh. Burn.
Jimmy Petrile ratted on him for 20 years, likely because Carmine wouldn't let him kill the man sleeping with his wife.
Carmine:
"ThereAreMillionsOfDollarsAtStake"
+scdevon again with the money???
+scdevon Ralph slept with Ginny?
+Jiggley Krowzer no Ralph made a joke about her and it got back to Johnny
Carmine Jr.: it's a rainy day's egg and we can't misappreciate it.
is that the title of a bones track
'So either name a price, or get the fuck over it.'
Carmine FTW
Johnny was the king of the walkouts
Them old Italian bosses are hilarious!!! lol!!!
"We bend more rules than the Catholic Church."... Classic!!!!!!
"...millions of dollars of steak."
Didn't know they were in the beef business.
NOBODY IS GETTIN CLLIIPPED
1:55 I actually don't think Tony was kidding either. He would have given him Ralph and took Paulie for himself.
Derek Johnson Maybe, but I'm pretty sure he knew Johnny wouldn't compromise. He just wanted to seem reasonable in Carmine's eyes while Johnny looks completely unreasonable and is in a much weaker position.
2:41 "Name a price or get the fuck over it!" ROFL!
bronsoninnit Back the fuck off, she's mine. Hey doll, hit me up and we'll talk.. ;)
Waytago Mandydoll! Great line.Carmine at his best.Wise head on old shoulders.
Mithrandir Thanks, hehehe! The emphasis he put on those words make it so funny to me. LOL!
bronsoninnit facken Sean Connery Roger moore Julio Iglesias jr heah
Well, he never had the makings of a varsity athlete.
back atit EVERYONE would be better if they didn’t let their emotions get the better of them. On this show, any show... in real life.
Tony was a great boss. But you’re right, he knew his unharnessed impulses were his downfall. I don’t know it was so much emotion but more just impulse.
Carmine was straight OG. "Name a price or get the fuck over it". How it should be.
The way Tony subtly like, shrugs his shoulders up almost propping them up when Junior says ‘My nephews right!’ - furthering in small ass real life details that Tony wants June to accept him and love him and needs his affection and approval. So subtle, nuanced, brilliant. Fuck
I think that was morw Tony going "SEE IM FUCKIN RIGHT"
hahaha Junior dressed up for this even tho this is through the phone
+rub3nski He just returned from a court case
This is a real mobster conduct.
Carmine is the Dalai Lama of this thing. Superb old school G.
"I want satisfaction"
...
"Will you accept an apology??" 😂😂
Carmine Sr is portrayed in the likes of the greart Dons of the late 20th century: Tony Accardo, Angelo Bruno, Carlo Gambino, Tony Genovese. Old school mafioso who were low key but exceptionally intelligent and rational. Their actions and motives are driven by what's best for business. There any ability is to command respect but still be able to instill fear. This is brilliant casting by David Chase. Tony lip was phenomenal
what the fuck is a tony genovese?
you know hes just an actor right....?
You mean Vito genovese
"It's what the taliban used to do"
:D
EndlessFunctionality the subtle jabs at the mafia's moral code are so classy. then they went on on to comparing their rule bending to the catholic church.
Carmine Lupertazzi, best boss of the series.
AntiThug PRO by far!
“Will you accept an apology?” 😂😂
You to got give it up to Johnny. He could have served Paulie up to Tony and got the ok to clip Ralph. He might have been playing Paulie for information but he was at least loyal.
He knew Paulie was still pretty useful
He wasnt loyal to paulie.
Paulie would of given him information about other future business it only would cost John a small amount of money toward paulie to get it.Buying him dinner or some gifts or something small.
Telling on Paulie not only would end that but if Paulie doesnt get killed he might seek to kill John for ratting on him.
Johnny looked to take advantage of paulie.
Johnny was loyal to himself.
That Paulie never tried to kill Johnny or had someone else kill Johnny was shocking to me.
Dan Nolan Paulie didn't have the balls. Johnny Sack was an underboss to a New York family. Paulie sucked up to higher members.
True for as many as he killed you would think he would have no problem taking Johnny out even off the record but he never did shit.
"Put Pontecorvo in there!!"
Classic!
David Chase is said to have another show in development.
Interesting Johnny suggests Eugene take over for Ralph. I didn't pick that up the first time I saw this scene.
Sack stood tall in the heat of wanting to Snitch over his wife.... Real balls
Love Carmine - he never say more then he needs to. Corrado - "how much did that trial set you back?" - ................. a lot.
"Is it safe?", says the FBI Informant.
"So either name a price or get the fuck over it"
I love that mindset.
Love the way Johnny Sack smokes. He really savours it.
carmine has no time for this
Lol Jr got all gussied up for a meeting he took over the phone lol😅😅😅
LOL! Did he put on the suit for the sit-down. Or was he coming back from another funeral?
He had court that day, according to another comment above.
Best sit down ever from this series.
Johnny Sack keeps hitting a wall, and Tony and Sil know it's true, and if Johnny calls their bluff, they at least find out who talked.
That would have been the end of Paulie Walnuts and Ralphie in one fell swoop.
Tony Lip was the perfect Don.
Johnny Sack :We bend more rules than the Catholic Church.... hands down the best line in this video
it's so hilarious how much junior is enjoying his privacy in that meeting, just eating away lol
Johnny sack needs to understand that Ralph cifaretto is a made guy. And you can't touch a made guy. Unless you have a good reason. And Ralph making fun of his wife is not a good reason.
I know, damn script writers should have had John to FUCKSHITCOCK...COCK..COOOOOOOCK.
I frickin' love Junior's nod at 2:14.
Johnny was my favorite character.
This show's supposed to be crime/drama, but half the time I was pissing myself from laughter.
"It's what the taliban used to do"... lol
Junior was the funniest character imo . His reactions his sayings and temarks absolutely hilarious
Carmine is a straight savage here
You and Tony Egg again.
Eddie Mush lmaoooo
The breakdown of the dynamics leading to Carmine's wise judgement:
Johnny would have gotten Carmine's approval of whacking Ralph, if he would have exposed his source, so the source could be confronted in order to make sure the rumor is 100% right.
Carmine already said Ralph would not be clipped. The fine might go up but no killing.
Paulie would’ve been grass if Johnny told all of them it was him right there lol
"my daughter is coming over with the baby later" - great line!
I love this part! is funny the look on john his face when his boss said name the price or get the fuck over it!
He said that to basically say "shut the fuck up it doesnt matter, now lets get on with the reason why were even having this meeting in the first place I got my daughter coming over with the baby I don't have time for this shit". haha.
You always want to get ahead in the mafia.
The taleban will be very proud to know that they thought the mafia how to talk on the phone without getting traced.
This scene smothered the relationship between Carmine and Johnny Sack for good.
1:56, Johhny thought about it, but getting revenge wasn't worth Paulie's life in his eyes.
John just didn't wanna close his back door into soprano family personal affairs
San like dude above me said. It had nothing to do with John feeling any compassion for Paulie. He worked Paulie for info about what Tony was doing. Paulie was such a schmuck Johnny told him Carmine asked about him. When Paulie runs into Carmine he doesn’t have a clue who he is. Which is kind of unbelievable. As long as Paulies been working for the Aprile/Soprano family, Carmine would have known who he was.
I would of took that deal. Johnny was already playing that nigga anyways
Johnny Sack is my favorite mobster in this show
2:40 Excellent line delivered by Carmine.
What makes me laugh is when Tony on the call makes as if Ralph never make that crack about Ginny when he was actually there when he said it.
Put Pontecorvo in there!
watching this again, i realized something interesting. john loved and respected his wife more than anybody else on the show but he would not give up paulie the rat when tony asked him who said it. he valued a rat in tony's family more than his wife's honor and we all know he turned rat too when he was arrested and admitted about his involvement with the mob. as old school and as respected as he was turns out he was motivated by self interest just like the rest of the mobsters
edit: call paulie what you like, he gave john information about certain things in his mob family which is a big nono. john preferred to keep paulie as his informant and even if he did give him up and paulie would deny it, that would destroy paulie's trust with tony (or even worse he could end up dead, remember his boat trip with tony?) so either way john would be in a lose lose scenario.
john's allocution was strange as well, he admits being part of the mob but isn't required to give anybody up? everybody knows mafia exists so what would be the point of him just acknowledging that publicly and again, without implicating anybody else? even so, this was a risky move by john which could easily get him clipped because if the mobsters know john is talking to the fbi, why would they take any chances with what he could tell them? rat or no rat, what he did angered the mob a lot and a lot of them lost their respect for him
p1t damn that’s an excellent insight loll his wife’s honor was super important but it STILL wasn’t first place! hahahahah
Ralph got Paulie back by prank calling his mother in the nursing home lol
2:14 the moment Tony knew Carmine hadn't made it right with Jon.
"We bend more rules than the Catholic church!" Ha ha ha ha ha !!!!!!!
Jamie Roumbanis perfectly description of the Trump administration
"We bend over more boys than the Catolic church !"
