For all the fame and glory of centerfire cartridges, rimfire cartridges, in particular the .22 Long Rifle, .22 Magnum and .17 HMR, are fired in volumes many times greater than all centerfire cartridges combined. Here is a glimpse of some of the more popular rimfires, although we have lost many more excellent rimfires to time. I hope you find the video at least a little informative. So much more can be written and said about these versatile, accurate and affordable rimfire cartridges. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel if you are able.

I had no idea there have been so many rimfire cartridges. Thanks USOG for bringing these to light. While I throughly enjoy learning about firearms and their chamberings , I can’t find much time to do so. The value of your videos, at least for me, is that you present great material that expands my knowledge without having to read hours of material. You seem to have found a “sweet spot” of presenting valuable information that people are interested in. Keep doing what you’re doing, it helps to feed to soul.

Lately I've gotten into collecting old rimfire cartridges, one day I'll make a display box for them. The old boxes can be interesting. I even buy obsolete rimfire calibers for guns I don't yet have, you just never know when that .25 RF rifle will show up. There were .32RF shotshells that used hollow wooden "bullets" to contain the shot, I recently found 19 of them in a bag of random ammo at a gun shop.

You are a man of Your word Sir , You said You'd do some more cartridge videos and here's one as requested just to start 2021 right ,the .218 Bee is a very interesting cartridge and incredibly powerful from what I've read , though looking through several Shooters Bibles I have , there aren't many manufactures catering for it , Thank You what a great start to 2021 . Wow I'm first viewer & first to comment , not that it matters in any real way but it's a novelty anyway ! Shoot Straight , Stay Safe & Stay Well !

Richard Dixon Hi Richard. When my grandpa passed, I got his Savage 340 in .222 Remington and my brother got his .218 Bee. He used them as carry guns while trapping in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s. While the .218 Bee cartridge is hard to find, it is still available occasionally. There are one or two ammo manufacturers that still make it about once a year. I always have an eye open for this ammo and buy it whenever I can for my brother. While I wouldn’t call it an incredibly powerful round, it’s no slouch in the velocity department at about 3100fps with a 40 grain bullet. It’s a great little, accurate round, out to about 100 yards.

Great synopsis of rimfire cartridges! One could make at least an hour video about the 22LR alone! There so many variables ... subsonic, standard, high, hyper, round nose, hollow point, segmented, copper, lead, washed, polymer, different lubricants, bulk, precision, many different projectile weights and on and on and on. And then we get into the effect of barrel length, twist rates, triggers and actions. Love it!!! Blessings to you and yours!

I haven't seen a box of .22 Long on the shelf in decades, but I have seen .22 WRF on the shelf in a nearby town. Then there is the .22 Extra Long which really didn't have anything extra to set it apart from the crowd. And then there is the .32 RF which fell by the wayside in the 1930's and silenced so many great firearms.
Far too often people overlook buying nicely made rimfire guns such as the .22 LR. I have heard people say "why bother it is only a .22." All I can say to that is that a nicely made gun is a joy in and of itself to shoot, and one in .22 allows a person to shoot a heck of a lot more then when one is shooting a nicely made .338 Win Mag.
    Have a Happy New Year!

I keep the normal 22lr just for target shooting and fun.
All most got snake bite because of it. I think what happened was the wax lube melted and got into the power.
We were putting up cow fence in a swamp bumped a nest of rattlesnake.
The closest one I tryed to shoot but every one missfired.
My buddy had his 38 so he shot it.
More than 75% of the box of 22lr in the truck would not go off.
It was the farm truck gun that stays in it all the time.
If i use a rf for anything serious its the 22mag it doesn't seem to misfire as much.
But the farm guns a cf now. Normal a cheap 410.
My great uncle carryed a 32 rf on his tractor up into the early 80's he shot that thing so much he shot out the rifling.
Just how many of those low powered lead bullet loads did he shoot to shoot it out?

I have never owned a firearm in .17 HMR so far , i came close 12 years ago but decided against it which was a nice bolt action rifle .. I see a lot of them at the range some days ..Shooters were shooting bottle caps @200 yards with that ctg, fun to watch the match rifles do their magic ...Maybe later on i should add one to my mix ....

Hi Bubba L - Phenomenal flat trajectory as you know, burns a lot of powder to get that velocity and needs a long barrel. An amazing performer on game. I saw a deer hit with the .257 in Saskatchewan at over 500 yards - not that far by todays standards I guess - but the deer was completely flattened and out - not a twitch that I could see through my binos. Roy Weatherby went to Africa with it - you could see his results - amazing.

I could be wrong on that title.. but they are bullets that are solid copper, solid brass, or a certain alloy of the two.. and not just a copper jackets around a lead slug... I think that would be an entertaining subject matter. The whole game of why or why not, either being due to cost, or time to manufacture them.. I am sure there is more to this other then them only being used in PRS or ELR type sport shooting.. No hurry, just a thought, beings that you are a walking encyclopedia of the firearms industry and ballistic and projectile manufacturing industry... Just saying.. I find any rimfire magnum round to be too pricey compared to the Long Rifle, which is why I prefer the .22 Hornet that can be reloaded. I have a Hornet barrel for my H&R Handi Rifle and a BFR to go with it. I used to have a Winchester bolt action in .218 Bee, and I could kick myself for parting with it.
None of my .22 RF LR revolvers have the optional magnum cylinder because of the ammo cost. I would rather handload the Hornet and bring out my BFR.

I have some 22 Long sitting in my gun cabinet. You didn't mention the 22 Winchester rimfire, parent case of the 22 magnum. I have some 22 WRF also. Is there a way to send some to you? An email perhaps? At one time there was also a .22 Extra Long.
FYI, the 17 Mach 2 is a necked down CCI Stinger case, not a necked down 22LR standard case. You'll notice the 17 M2 case is slightly longer than the LR case.

I like that little9mm and 5mm Flobert (spelling?). I know you are busy, but if you know off hand please advise me who makes rifles for that parlor cartridge other than Anschu. I would like to order a nice classic example of a single shot if you know of any. I’ll try to do some research on the internet, but as I’ve said I am not a computer guy. Going to our ranch or to the range is easy for anything, but I always like to find fun rifles to shoot on my little lane in town. Cheers.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I live in the dreaded California. I currently have three shops that make and accept out of state orders for me. I prefer and collect vintage or classic firearms, like single shots or bolt actions pumps leavers or any shotgun, so I don’t ever have any problems shipping what I like to collect. Thank you much.

I never watch your videos without my Hornady loading book. 🙂. I watched one once, and couldn't find it and almost lost my mind 😃
Very interesting. I knew in the old days there were a lot of rimfire, but had no idea there were so many still around.
And you reload rimfire? You have to see if you can put out a video without TH-cam punishing you.
And if I could offer a little constructive criticism, it was maybe a little disjointed. Just take a run up the board talking about each one in particular and move on, but I know it's hard. I don't think we would mind if you had show notes with you. Not being a jerk, I just wanted to offer some help.
Hope you're doing great over the holidays and have a good year coming up.

Hey Jim - Happy New Year - always good to hear from you. Rimfire cartridges are so great - I'm trying to get Aquilla to make special runs of some of the classics - .32 RF, .25 RF and others. Maybe I'll have to visit them to explain better. All the best to you Jim!

Hello Ad H - I can do that; and in the meantime - I'm not sure where you are or which deer but you can't go too far wrong with a .243 Winchester in any decent bolt action - such as the Ruger 77, Rem. 700 or Win. Model 70, Howa or Tikka. Thanks for asking.

Are compatible the 22 long and the 22LR?

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Carlos - The short, long and long rifle all work in a .22LR but won't cycle a semi-auto action. Single shot rifles and bolt actions often work with all 3 - as will many pump rifles. One has to try and see if the the rifle you own cycles the shorter rounds.
