Congrats on doing this video. I learnt about Hagbard, Pengo, their team, what they were doing with KGB, their personal stories and of course CCC from a local computer magazine around late 90's or early 00's, never found anyone else mentioning them in youtube and back then in general english speaking internet parts. Pengo's story and skills was also very impressive (he is said that on an online fight with an admin, he developed a worm, possibly the first ever created, cause admin asked him to leave or something like this). Plenty of lessons can be taken from this story. For real, BRAVO! Literally, this story is imprinted in my mind, for YEARS, read it again and again so I could grasp every detail the story was talking about! :) THANK YOU!!! and happy new year btw ;)
Imagine having a trillion dollars in hardware, hundreds of thousands of global employees, all the resources on the planet, and losing to one guy with like one iPhone
In my early university days when the internet was young, the US cut Finland off because of a hacking incident. There were serious diplomatic efforts to mend the situation. Imagine something like that happening in the modern day.
1:05 love how the 'microchip schematic' looks as complex as the crystal radio project my grandpa passed down to me. I'm being a smart a$$ but also subbing. I love this kind of content, well done!
By the way the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) is now a serious organization and on occasion advisor to the german government. It upholds the core principles of information freedom, personal liberties and net neutrality. The club has come a long way since the 80s without losing themselves or their chaos for that matter.
You should check out the documentary "into the realm" that documents the Australian hacking groups that were operating at the same time and had a connection with the Germans.
4:32 on the end user's side this used to be a thing with outlook. You didn't have to have anything miss configured you just had to open a bad email and macros would allow it to inject things it otherwise shouldn't be able to.
Srsly... the movie about Karl Koch (the Title is "23 - nichts ist wie es scheint") is totally awesome and an absoulute must for everyone slightly interested in this thematic. also the soundtrack is insanely good.
@@mihalachebogdan1 I first heard about it in 1995. His website Seti23 was literally the first thing I found when I first went on the internet. I was looking for the Seti website, found him instead..
14:30 information should be accessible to everyone. Well mostly (maybe not nuclear secrets) if every side knew what the other side was doing, might just help stop wars or more wars lol
Caller ID was introduced in 1993 in the US, even later in Germany. As the video explains, it seems back then you had to physically measure which circuits had electricity to track a call. Which is why they needed him to download a huge file, to keep him connected long enough.
Thought it sounded familiar within about 30 seconds.. Wierd that 3 years earlier I lived near Hannover, however I was only 7 or 8 at the time. Just noticed.. the book is on the desk.
thank you very much for this well researched and presented story of the hackerscene in EU. I really recommend the movie 23 ...... from germany , but there is a successor of this movie trying to explain who sergej was etc.... i do not wanna spoil please see it for yourself.

First law of probability is: "If there is a greater than 0% chance of any event occurring, it will occur." Conspiracy theories are just stories we make up in our minds or others minds and we choose to believe or disbelieve... Until they happen. More simply, if you can imagine it, then maybe you can make it true.
22:23 thank you for the subtitle translation! It's very difficult to read though. You might have done better with a title card with bigger text on a solid background.
Definitely can’t just wake up and open TH-cam and jump into something this deep. I thought this said how Gene Hackman sold us secrets to the kgb…. I was like oh shit Gene Hackman was a spy 😂😂😂😂
15:09 that philosophy is usually attributed to hackers: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_wants_to_be_free also, computer phreaks and hackers are different groups with significant overlap
We hope you've enjoyed! In our last explainer, we ran a small contest. The person who won it is honored in this video. Can you find their name?
That book.
Hagbart?

That’s still bread and butter mate.
In fact I dare say it’s number 1
So nice to see all the Old pics once again, thank you
The film 23 is also about Karl Koch.
Also available on YT.
Came here to say that. Its an amazing movie. One of my favorites. Watched it many many times

Anyone else find cyber-crime documentaries much more fascinating than true-crime murder documentaries?? This video was phenomenal!
The Cuckoo’s Egg is a detailed book on the whole story written by Stoll himself. Very good.
No they can be equally boring
Body was "burned thrououghly enough to get rid of any identifying info" yet was still determined to be Hagbards body? How?
Yeah this science stuff doesn’t seem realistic someone should call the cops
Good question
I mean, his car was nearby. Seems like a pretty good guess.
Teeth brah, shit can withstand over 1,500° for over 60 minutes. Even then, fragments will still remain.

This is the first video outside of the AI dude that I wanted to watch! Keep these coming wonderful story telling!! 🤙✨👏

Just found this channel. I'm hooked. Keep it up!
The way my neurons activated when he said the names benson and hedges together
Inaccurate to say most cyber criminals are caught using a honeypot

Benson, Hedges...the hacker must have been a smoker!

I've heard the other end of this story, the tracking of these guys, so this is great, thank you!
The Cuckoo's Egg (Cliff Stoll) & Cyber Punk (Katie Hafner and John Markoff), both good reads.
Algorithm viewer: sick visuals and great storytelling
Great explanation and great story.Keep up.
Your animation style is beautiful! Keep it up, great work!
Got a new sub. I enjoyed the video!
Cool documentary!!

Maybe it’s just me but I really don’t mind a sponsorship ad get that bag just put a bar under so I can skip to the end🤣
Dodos actually made the modern internet using their cousins, the pigeons.. been running for 34m years
Hundreds of computers sounds like an understatement
Very interesting story 🔥
It's about time someone covered Karl Koch's story.
Where have you heard about his story if i may ask ?
@@mihalachebogdan1 I first heard about it in 1995. His website Seti23 was literally the first thing I found when I first went on the internet. I was looking for the Seti website, found him instead..

I mean, would it have been that hard to have caller ID on Berkley and Bremen and look that up in a phone book?
Caller ID was introduced in 1993 in the US, even later in Germany.

well if the military had a secret plan named “operation new jet fighter” it wouldn’t be very secret
Спасибо за интересный выпуск.. С любовью из России.
A great documentary on this is a film called The KGB, the computer and me. Told by the person who tracked the hackers down
To be fair he'd be more valuable to any government alive so the idea of him going out on his own terms isn't crazy
Fun documentary about these cyber punks.
If you want to see the American side just watch "The Computer, the KGB and Me"
Anybody know of any other books other than Stoll's on this?
I'd be fascinated to learn more!
14:07 he wasn’t wrong.
I’m old enough and a news junkie enough to verify this story is true. I have seen it published before
sic, love it, like the illuminatus trilogy
Superb' every second is very interesting, can you tell how you have done starting animation

I wanted to watch the Russian Hacker Video again and this suddenly appeared on my feed
Okay but how in the hell was he supposed to have prevented a wildfire in his self immolation? The theory is dead right there imo
I don't even have to watch this. I've listened to the cuckoo's egg like a dozen times I knew exactly what you were referring to with the title lol.
Theres a cool german movie called '23' from 1998 about this.
Where can I listen to the song dedicated to Hagbard?
Clock DVA - The Hacker
I'm noticing people put up German flags in my area and high on the hills. And I'm getting weird NN energy in the LA area.
