  • Like other technological advances, the growing use of artificial intelligence in warfighting is a foregone conclusion. But as "Sunday Morning" senior contributor Ted Koppel reports, questions persist on how AI is developed and deployed on the battlefield, by both the U.S. and its adversaries.

Not entirely true, you do have access to some top-of-the-line AI systems that are on par with what the government has access to. My understanding is that the TH-cam AI code is so advanced that essentially no one fully comprehends how it works.

The following is an AI generated response to this video:
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the realm of warfighting is indeed a topic that demands serious consideration. The video you've mentioned, "AI: The Next Battlefield," raises crucial questions about how AI is developed and deployed in the military context, both by the United States and its adversaries.
AI has the potential to revolutionize warfare, offering advantages in areas such as decision-making speed, precision targeting, and autonomous systems. However, this progress also comes with significant ethical, strategic, and practical challenges.
    1. **Ethical Concerns**: The use of AI in warfare raises ethical questions about the potential for autonomous weapons to make life-or-death decisions. The risk of AI systems making errors or being manipulated raises concerns about accountability and the adherence to international laws of armed conflict.
    2. **Strategic Implications**: The United States and other countries must carefully consider the strategic implications of AI in warfare. While AI can enhance military capabilities, its widespread adoption could lead to an arms race, increasing the risk of conflict escalation.
    3. **Security Risks**: As the video mentions, the development and deployment of AI in warfare are not limited to the U.S. Its adversaries are also investing in AI for military purposes. This creates security risks, as vulnerabilities in AI systems could be exploited by hostile actors.
    4. **Human Control**: One critical aspect discussed in this context is the importance of maintaining human control over AI systems. Ensuring that humans remain "in the loop" when it comes to making critical decisions in warfare is essential to prevent unintended consequences.
    5. **International Collaboration**: Addressing the challenges posed by AI in warfare requires international cooperation. Establishing norms and regulations around AI use in military contexts can help mitigate risks and promote responsible behavior.
In conclusion, the growing use of AI in warfare is an inevitable reality, but it also demands careful consideration, responsible development, and ethical use. It's essential for governments, policymakers, and international organizations to work together to establish guidelines and regulations that ensure AI is employed in a manner that aligns with human values, international laws, and global security.

In the coming years, the use of AI could eventually give the American military some advantage. But in 20 years the dependence on this technology will be so great that there will be an increasing and consistent loss of essential military cognitive capabilities among officers and soldiers. In a likely scenario of destruction or disruption of the AI system on which they will depend or the possibility of it being accessed, the result will be the total lack of military capacity of US troops to sustain a conflict on the battlefield. Having the best technology is not and will never be a guarantee of victory. In this specific case, exactly the opposite can happen, because AIs or the databases they use can be hacked.

At 11:00 Ted Koppel elegantly and eloquently cites historical precedent as cautionary tale. A perfect demonstration of why knowledge of history is so important. We may be able to create artificial intelligence, but what of wisdom, morality, and ethics? We already know AI is being used, developed, and deployed for military applications, and yes in other areas as well. No matter how well-intentioned we may be (assuming the best, not the worst) even under the best of circumstances unintended consequences (and yes benefits) will result. What's to prevent AI from one day deciding that the earth and life on this planet would be better off without the presence of humans and then endeavoring to eradicate the menace?

Oh, whatever. I played Reversi against Google's BARD and not only did it fail to even understand the game, but it claimed it was "tired" and "needed rest." I then got it to admit that it was "still learning" and is "just a language model" and that it doesn't know how to play the game. The main problem was that it couldn't accurately read/identify images used in the game play nor those available online. It also couldn't follow the board's grid for piece placement, nor did it understand the concept of flipping pieces over. It didn't understand the rules about where pieces could be played and couldn't be played, nor did it understand the objective of the game.

All I can say on how the "next" conflict has to be fought is to Study how the US HAD to fight Japan in WW II. If it hadn't been for the two bombs 14 million people would have died. The Japanese leadership was not willing to stop even though they knew it was over. Only the Emperor saying this was over ended it. It was a vicious brutal war against and enemy that believed they couldn't surrender and it had to be fought at that level. Not many WW II vets left but if you know any talk to them. You MUST learn from the past or regret it. I'm 78 years old and born at the end of WW II, (a War Baby - not a Baby Boomer) I grew up around these men and they hated what they were forced to do but did it because they had too. They should have used better poker players to play against. "Pro" does not necessarily mean "Good". There are a lot of losing "pros", tournaments are filled with them. It was only 4 players, not even a full final table in a tournament, and the 4 they used may be on the plus side of career winnings, but, they are far from "names". Looks like they got 4 "grinders"...
Does the A.I. look for "tells", or just runs the statistics? Does it always play "tight", or does it play that way to score a big bluff later? Can the human play that way to bluff the A.I.?
I've played others who "played the stats/odds", and took their money...

Ted Koppel’s integrity is compromised by his belief that his good friend Henry Kissinger was the best Secretary of State that the US will ever know.

The fundamental flaw in this story and from the experts being interviewed is that in each case, the AI the SPECIALIZED. In other words, it was highly trained for specific purposes. AI is not as flexible as humans, nor is it creative and fluid. Nor does it understand context. Does it have its uses? Yes. But does it live up to all the hype? Absolutely not! Any instance of AI is only as good as its programmers and the data fed into it. Both have flaws that will be engrained in that specific AI.
