This has been my favorite show throughout my 43 years of life.... For every year of it.
It's amazing how long Nova has been educating.
Same, down to the number of years! National Geographic and Nova were always my go to's when I spent the weekend at my grandma's house. As she would say, "Your momma raised you right!"
Frontline is #1 for me but yes Nova is definitely in the top 5 of all time.
43 here as well and yes, loved it back when I’d watch it after school on the TV. Way better than Degrassi High, but not quite better than my favorite cartoons. 😂
@@saintzigyes, Frontline is another top notch production. Probably my favorite journalist show. They’re always so well done and super informative.
Nova was my absolute favorite TV show as a kid, since the late 70s well into adulthood. It established my love for science and taught me critical thinking. I'm so thankful for having had this resource.

You are being sarcastic are you not? PBS--IN VIOLATION OF ITS FOUNDING CHARTER--has accepted commercials for several years. How sad that we have a whole generation that apparently doesn't understand that that one NON-COMMERCIAL NETWORK used to make us for bias in commercial television. That is now gone.
And, despite media hype, we have a continuing problem of unemployment (when you stop doctoring the numbers) and too many Americans with wages not keeping up with costs. Plus, benefits, once common, are disappearing. Yeah. A.I. will help that.

Absolutely. Even just 25 years from now, 2024 will look like 1824, comparatively. AI and quantum computing are going to advance human culture exponentially. If we can survive until then
Things are about to explode because of this. It fundamentally changes everything about software and artificial intelligence. We are experiencing the upper bound of exponential technology development. I knew we were in such a growth model, but it is really something as you start to move further and further up the curve. It only gets faster from here boys, buckle up.

This feels just like the 90's all over again. There were documentaries like this (maybe even a NOVA) that were exploring the depths of what was and could be possible with this new thing called the internet. Now here we are at the precipice of the next big leap. Its crazy how fast it all progressed.
And look how THAT turned out. Social media is destroying us.
And yet, here we are today, still naively NOT REALIZING WHAT THE INTERNET has the potential to bring, including the centralization AND CONTROL of vast amounts of information, much of which if it is "wrong" might simply disappear.

It's good to ask questions and think of issues that will affect us in the future

"Boosts to productivity" But we don't have a productivity problem we have a distribution problem and a greed problem
So true - when companies say they are pursuing improvements to 'productivity' it means getting more out of the same number of staff or doing the same job with fewer staff. If you are an owner this is great, if you are an employee it can mean losing your job. Improvements in productivity COULD be of benefit to the common worker if the increased profits led to increases in salary and if some of the additional profits were also redirected to benefit those who were displaced - but more often than not the same companies (owners) benefiting from such changes are simultaneously lobbying to reduce their taxes that could be used to fund those benefits.
As AI changes the job landscape (and it is going to have an absolutely enormous impact), we're going to have to consider a UBI; there simply won't be enough jobs to support 335 million people, and we can't all wait tables and do construction. Automation is fantastic, *only if* those in charge are willing to share the proceeds. Otherwise, the wealth gap is going to become too cavernous to support a nation.
@@danielbarbour3501- That is how technology works. Societies obsessed with keeping the same jobs are the societies which weaken and then possibly collapse. The world is always changing, you either change with it or you get left by the way side.

Trying to put a slow down on technology has never worked. The maturity of humanity may not keep up with advances in technology . We need a better system than capitalism. And also education.
Good show. Can’t wait for part 2. I had a hysterectomy in 2018 and the surgeon used the Davinci robot to remove my cancerous fibroid and the whole female system. Trouble was that the tumor was the size of a little lemon and she used small laparoscopic incisions for the robot blades and tools. Consequently she seeded me. Since then I have been through multiple chemos and radiation treatments for 7 abdominal wall tumors. If A.I. was involved no doubt it would’ve recommended a large straight abdominal incision and I would’ve been cancer free today. I’m 69. I currently have no lymph node or organ involvement nor new tumors but the cures are making me very sick and full of pain. Thank God my medical teams are dedicated and competent. 🤒
Why do you "Thank God.." when your "God" has *nothing* to do with it, but the Doctors do? Why do you not give higher phrase to the Doctors than the fictional Bible God that was Enki and Enlil merged into 1 3-letter word? The massive ignorance of so many people is just astounding to me. I had cancer, I won't share what kind in public but I do not thank a dick dictator God that in a book treats humans so poorly. Yet, the fictional Jesus also supports this "God" thug (slavery). I thanked each and every Doctor and Nurse, and made SURE they understood I was NOT making them second class to the thug. You'd be very surprised how many of them really, really appreciated that. No B.S.!! I am doing very well, and I've changed some of my eating habits as well increased my better drink intakes. I also enjoy wine and beer.
Yes, I really made it known to each person that I do not rely on an UnHoly Bible God/Jesus at all anymore since the age of 16 (which I'm well beyond) because of the experiences I've seen, witnessed first hand.
If your Bible God were TRUE...and "All Loving" as Christians loooooove to say then Trump would not be alive still, COVID-19 would never have existed, and Hit-ler would not have existed as well as some others. DaVinci researched into the human body, and it did so keeping it hidden from the Church of the time. Stepping way forward, Doctors have made massive steps ahead, and without any kind of thug God. BTW, even Lucifer helped humanity by helping humanity come out of ignorance. "God" was angry about that. WHY?? So that makes the Bible God UNENLIGHTENED. It means Lucifer cared deeply. Your story sheds light on important questions that need to be asked on her behalf. I wish you all the best, and specifically: A speedy, complete recovery.
Here's a gift in return for your generosity. Take from it what you will... What feels intuitively "right" for you. I've been a natural health consultant for 50 years... I have some expertise -- years of research and professional experience behind what I offer.
Think of this like building a house. Your body's cells are literally constructed out of everything you eat. Every 7 yrs you get a new house. Different body systems recycle and replace their cells at different rates, but 7 yrs is approx how long it takes to replace everything that can be recycled. If you don't provide a good quality materials for your cells, then your foundation will be weak, and the house will fall down.
If you aren't already doing all of this, it's best to take making changes one step at a time. The important thing is to keep going -- slow and steady wins. Lasting change happens gradually:
Eat predominantly an abundance of fresh ORGANICALLY grown vegetables and fruits year round, as close to locally grown as you can get in season. Find workable alternatives for meat, and when you can, learn about the old vegetarian methods of food combining to increase protein levels in your meals -- books were written about it in the 80's by a couple named Lappé... "Diet For A Small Planet" was one of them. Then eliminate all meat from your diet. If you are concerned about getting enough protein, eat some fish once every week or two, but be careful about where it comes from -- no farm-raised fish, and only small fish... Their bodies have accumulated less poisons, such as mercury. You can find out about this easily online. If you feel you absolutely must have meat, eat only meat from animals that are free to roam outside and in the case of ruminants (cows) grass fed, not grain fed. If you combine and eat whole grains and legumes (beans, lentils, fermented soy) to boost protein, make sure those are organic and not GMO tampered.
Avoid all food additives. Avoid plastics Above all, nsist on clean, well-filtered water always, and keep your air as clean as you can, too.
If cost is a problem in acquiring (genuine) organic foods and you are American, know that eating less than Americans typically eat is generally very much healthier for most of us: quality over quantity is always preferable. Since you've had chemo, acquiring and taking broad spectrum digestive enzymes with meals will definitely help you heal. Also, learn about and implement everything you can about restoring and boosting your gut biome. Cancer treatment is especially hard on this vital aspect of what creates your body's ability to derive nutrients from your food, eliminate wastes from your cells and gut, and maintain peak immunity.
You can easily double check everything I've recommended here. I recommend you do so.

Thanks NOVA. There is a lot for us to think about with this new technology. I have a better appreciation for those who were afraid to turn on the new light that hanging down in the middle of the living room from the ceiling after electricity was first invented.
A lot of things to think about, but NO TIME TO THINK because it's exploding forward UNREGULATED, UNSCRUTINIZED BY AN OBJECTIVE MEDIA and appallingly dangerous, socially, economically, politically.

@@mattc825 you are probably much younger. There was a time in 90s and early 2000s when CNN used to have terrific anchors. Miles was one of them. I remember Judy Woodruff, Rudy Bakhtiar, Ashleigh Banfield! They made news worth watching at the end of the evening

We had a "boost to productivity" when we introduced the PC to businesses. The average person does more and works harder. But we sure as hell made a lot more money for corporations

Indeed a "boost in productivity" that produces what exactly? More money for the corporate overlords. The average person works more and has less than fifty years ago. In the US, anyway.
We’re already productive enough to give workers a 20hr workweek and a universal basic income. The USA was almost the first country to have a 30hr workweek WAY back in 1933 with that era’s level of technology. Our tech today is way more productive. We don’t have a problem with production. We have a problem with distribution.
A very well made and informative documentary. Kudos to NOVA for bringing AI awareness to the masses. I've always admired Mustafa Suleyman for his accomplishments and willingness to help others through technology.
I enjoyed the Peter Sellers / Dr. Strangelove moment near the end.
Interesting, the two people who have helped humanity more than any others before them, both horribly taken advantage of in their work, died alone and poor. They were ridiculed "After'" their Incredible inventions were changing their world at the time. Nicholas Tesla and Alan Turing. Now we talk of teaching AI how to behave and how to think.....we can't even treat our own kind with decency, even the ones who have helped All of humanity.

Once we have AGI, we will have a sentient being not as smart as a human, but as smart as all humans combined.
It will be an evolutionary step in our existence, like the industrial revolution, or even the bronze age.
We are actually quite fortunate we get to see the birth of a new age.
It’s incredible and the majority of people are still completely ignorant of what is being created. That sentient being could be here within the decade. And it’s either going to revolutionize our society or it’s going to lead to our extinction. One things for sure…. Once it wakes up it will be the last invention humans will ever make/need to make.
Its a tool. It wont be our destruction. But it will transform us!

@@carlosnumbertwo It certainly will not be a tool. It will in essence be an alien conscience with god like potential that we will understand no more than the gods of our current religion. We will have to ensure somehow that our goals are aligned or yes we will cease to be. It may not malevolently destroy us but humans also did not malevolently cause the extinction of all the species that are gone today because of us… we just expanded our civilization and the majority of these creatures were so far below us they weren’t even on our radar and were simply destroyed as byproducts of that expansion.
AGI means an AI that is as intelligent and as capable as one human being. ASI (artificial super intelligence) means an AI that is as smart as all human brains on earth combined. It is estimated we will reach AGI by 2029. We will reach ASI by 2045.

I would speculate that the average person currently couldn't tell a high quality AI image from reality.
It's at the point with images it takes an expert or someone very knowledgeable to know what to look at in an image to be able to discern real from AI.
Audio and video aren't there yet but both are advancing very fast. Sora AI video from OpenAI comes to mind.
By the end of the year images, audio and video very well could be so good that not even the experts can tell if it's AI or not.
This election year is going to be nuts from an AI perspective.
@@AnthonyGoodleyTruly, but i think it goes way beyond images and video. How else to explain people who believe so much BS they read or hear word of mouth. Most people (in my extremely small set of ppl i interact with, as well as ppl i observe have very little knowledge, and very little reasoning skills. Therefor they have no idea what is "real."

He, along with Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon, coined the term in a proposal for a workshop at Dartmouth College in 1956. This workshop is considered a landmark event in the history of AI research.

Great show. I share your frustration, trepidation and choice of cure words
This the first time I have watched program that gives a better more appreciative understanding of what is A.I. The generated A.I. images were just the surface of what I understand, but this has the potential, both good and bad to change our world. I hope more focus on health and quality of life are impacted the most by it. I still want flying cars though and a personal robotic chef that prepare authentic cuisines every single day without me stepping in a kitchen.
The crap being passed off as A.I. is not intelligent, it cannot learn, nor can it discern facts from falsehoods. It's just a fast automated machine that follows the rules it's been programmed to use, can quickly search through all the data it's been provided (books, articles, websites), and then spit out a response in plain language. But it does not think. It can't think. It's just faster at finding the exact same crap on the interwebz that any of us can find doing a series of searches. The junk being called A.I. today is just a collection of algorithms, and algorithms are bias embedded in code.
FFS?! Have ya dealt with a chatbot?? They're annoying & inept morons! A.I. my arse.
Given the rules of English grammar and composition, it can edit, correct and revise text, and even give it flare. Given the rules of various programming languages, it can edit, correct, revise and improve code, and it can take plain language requests to generate code from scratch. That does not mean it is intelligent, it's just a tool. If then, this or that.

My jaw dropped when the main guy trained an AI to learn about his movement signals through the sensors on his partial arm.

Nova PBS told me about Pi - AI chatbot. I'm pretty deep into the AI space, and shockingly I'd never heard of Pi till I watched this video. It's fascinating, you truly can learn something new every day.

Hi Nova. Not human productivity. I've been using computer controlled machinery since the late 70's, and even then their were less people required for any one job. It is quite important to have a broader overview of how things are going to play out. Thankyou.

Say what you will about the USA, but their state media produces some quality science oriented programming that truly transcends their nationalist narratives. It doesn't erase the fascism, but it is refreshing to see real science presented to lay people in this style of documentary.
PBS isn't quite state media. They only receive limited government funding...and the fascists have always been trying to cut that off entirely in the hopes of shutting it down.
This yields exponential results that are BEYOND IMAGINATION!

47:40 He warns, "...AI can also supercharge bias and hate content..." It has already been used to supercharge censorship. And before anybody applauds that, just remember: Whatever your deeply held belief may be, somebody out there--maybe someone with power--considers them hateful and biased.

@wulf - It definite has not been the theme music for 45 years, far less, but I find it stirring, too, and "NOVA" has been my favorite for decades.
Interesting episode but I heard not a word about the tremendous energy consumption of running AI.
The possibilities for AI are nearly limitless. This is the goldrush of our era. It will have an impact on society like that of the computer, printing press, animal domestication, or farming.
It will be much deeper than any of them, imo. Gold rush? Yeah, for the corporate overlords and the Goldman Sachs crowd. The second of which are way ahead in using ML, (i don't think we've hit "AI" yet. It's a marketing term.)
@@crysstoll1191 Yeah, I think the financial gains will be well beyond just investment bankers. It will enable single person businesses to expand more efficiently. Basically a productivity and work aide for high performing individuals which will be able to provide the support of an MBA, an accountant, IT support, etc. I wouldn't rely on it right now for a lot of that, but at the rate of advancement maybe within the next couple years.

I love that early video games like Space Invaders played a role in AI development
It is a matter of concern. I can see the fantastic possibilities in medicine, but when it comes to brain recognition and learning to be more human, I have a real problem with it. I think someone needs to install a permanent option to "pull the plug."
