  • Decided to look into the Yates Center Kansas Sheep and Goat sale. The only way I can tell much is to take some of our stock there so we had some 68 lb. wethers and cull ewes and nannies. The sale had about 2000 head there. They moved very slowly through them. We unloaded at 1:30, the sale starts at 6pm. ours didn't sell until after 10 pm. The price was disappointing to say the least. Glad we didn't take more.

What is your plan with them? Will you just feed them and take them back?

Seems like the goat market and sheep for that matter has softened quite a bit
    I sold weather's for 300 a head in October

Up here in manitoba prices seem to be similar. I sold 100lb lambs 2 weeks ago for 1.85$cdn/ lb. 70 lbs were going for about 2.30$ cdn.

Cookstown this week was 220 cdn.. embrum in Ottawa the same.
Even checked new Holland stateside and it's similar.
Goats are still good but slowing down.
      What happened to the market?

@@jefffraser6666 That's what we always wonder. I heard this week that the sungold plant in Alberta was bought by a company from Quebec and they will keep processing lambs which is good.

I guess it matters where you are in Toba.
Do you know which company bought the plant?
The last few years have been really good for lamb.

@@jefffraser6666 I know some from here who ship to Toronto. I'm done selling lambs this year. I heard the name but don't remember now.

We have some that aren't fat enough yet. I can't see selling an unfinished animal this time of year. Some are too big to sell well as feeders but not fat enough to sell well as fats. We'll do like always, sell the ones that are ready to sell and keep feeding some trying to hit a few different sales and time frames. You never know what's best until it's too late. We may hit a sale between Christmas and New Years with some.

I thought most auctions bid by 100lb (cwt) vs by the head. I get confused easily between the austioneer and the prices changing depending on the size of the animal.

Some breeding stock sell by the head. Most slaughter animals sell by the lb. You just have to listen to the auctioneer or ringman. They will say if it is by the head. You really have to go to a few sales. It's not too hard to figure out.
