This is undoubtedly one of the greatests duets ever. But what Paul Simon does at the end elevates this performance into the musical genius level. Paul, after finishing the final harmony, withdraws to allow Art Garfunkel to use his God-given incredible vocal talent to take the song into the stratosphere. It's so generous from Paul but he knows that, even though the song is a duet, the finale requires a really powerful solo. Pure class. Love them both.
Look at Paul clapping at the end, such huge respect for Art's singing! I heard an interview many years ago with Paul Simon where he said after he wrote the song, he knew that Art had to sing lead on it because he's one of the greatest singers ever. And he was right.
When I was a kid in the 70s,driving around listening to songs on the radio, there were a few songs that would make all of us fall silent..BRIDGE was one of them.
Are they singing with auto tune? Maybe it’s just the audio capture but it sounds like they were using it in the background just to enhance their voices a little bit
Every time I watch this, I cry. This is what fucking music, performance, and art is about. Both are much older gentlemen in this clip and have such understanding of their voices and respect of the music and lyrics of the piece. They serve the song, not serving the song for themselves.
I'm right there crying with you! I feel so lucky to have been born in the 50's and grow up in the 60's & 70's with such great music. Those decades were truly the birth of some of the greatest singers & songwriters to ever grace the airwaves.
every Friday night when dad came home, it was music that mattered. it could be bruce springsteen or simon and garfunkel. but I knew that every Friday we got to listen to music that could be heard all over the village, and today 20 years after he passed away I do the same with my children and they like it
Was my late wife and I's song. We'd be married 52 years in August. S&G were the soundtrack of our life. she taught HS English for years and used their songs to teach poetry.
In April 2020, when the streets went silent, shut in a little apartment just me and my cats, not sure if opening a window would harm me, my phone my only connection to the world, in the dead of night this song drifted through the smallest crack of my window, thinking how this song perfectly fit this time all these years later, giving the smallest sense of calm and knowing I'm not alone in my thoughts. Millions were with me but millions also died. Giving thanks to life in 2023 and thanks to the All Mighty One who provides and decides.
Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon are national treasures and they’ve still got it! They wrote songs that touched the hearts of millions with more beauty and meaning than what I’ve seen my generation coming up with nowadays
I bought their greatest hits album in 1973, when I was 15, just because of this one song. I loved the rest of their songs and 50 years later this is still my all-time favourite song. An incredibly emotional experience every time I hear it.
I love to listen to them both together..having also seen each live as a single. Unfortunately Art for several reasons..had little left of his voice the last I saw him in concert in Clearwater, Fl a few years back.
Imagine that moment when you find out you can sing, doing it again and again and holding that song beautifully. Like 'Air Guitar' I'd belt out a tune and absorb every beat. I'm rambling, wonderful song. X God Bless.
The song was played at a church revival when I was a young boy. While listening to this song. I excepted Christ as my personal savior. It was the moment I was reborn for I truly feel in love with Jesus.
I think you mean you accepted him. I excepted from my life years ago, have never been happier. Why don't you look up those two words, see which one actually applies to you.
Paul gave the greatest gift to Art to record this masterpiece . Paul was generous and wrote one of the greatest songs ever written. It brings peace and grace to the soul. It has helped me in the saddest of times. My appreciation. Thank you Paul Simon💐
Simon and Garfunkel. Sony and Cher. The Beatles. I basically grew up with them in my ear. So their break ups bothered me, always have. I was 15 when these two called it quits. Since, The Sounds of Silence, it's been clear that Simon was the songwriting powerhouse of this duo. Still, Art had some beautiful vocals that were never more front and center than on this song. Bridge Over Troubled Water gives me chills!
Yes this and sounds of silence were really classic pieces of music history, and I think Art was the lead singer and voice of both of these classic masterpieces!
@@barryrichman2874 I only mentioned they broke up and it bothered me at the time, not that their music was comparable. Sorry if that's what you thought.
Wow these guys brings back beautiful memories of my childhood growing up in Clairwood, Durban, South Africa. We had many talented musicians they always played Simon and Garfunkel songs in our street corners.❤❤❤2024
This has been my number 1 most cherished song since I 1st heard it. I’ve let my husband know I want this played at my funeral. It conveys how he’s always been there for me. He is also my Lord - always there for me. To me, this is a beautiful Hymn!
I saw them in Atlanta at the Georgia Tech stadium. I don't remember what year it was, but they only did two concerts. It was absolutely one of the most awesome and beautiful musical experiences I have ever experienced.
Simon and Garfunkel,my favourite band since the 70’s,they are one of the best ,anyway good luck to Paul and Arthur, hope they will be doing well after the professional life, blessed to be your fan
How can you say about 2 of the best talented artists in the world giving back don't forget this is something our health professionals have forgotten unless you pay on your way out. Can't believe it took so long to get art in to sing. Paul Simon is probably and thank you for getting art in
When you're weary, feeling small, When tears are in your eyes I will dry them all I'm on your side When times get rough And friends just can't be found Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down When you're down and out When you're on the street When evening falls so hard I will comfort you I'll take your part When darkness comes And pain is all around Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Sail on, silver girl Sail on by Your time has come to shine All your dreams are on their way See how they shine If you need a friend I'm sailing right behind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind (Pong...)
This duo was before my time. However, I discovered the genius of Simon and Garfunkel. Art absolutely crushed it. What an angelic voice. It’s unfortunate egos got in the way.
Tears just flows over my eyes while watching this in a bus full of people. They all comforted me as if I had a problem then I cried more I felt loved. The power of this music hits so hard.
It's such a tragedy that these two can't get along well enough to even speak to each other anymore. I know Art wants to reconnect; I hope Paul comes around, too, before it's too late.
Unfortunately, Art can no longer hit those beautiful high notes. You can find videos here on YT of him singing solo and with his son who has joined his dad on vocals. They are good together. There were many years that Art lost his voice totally and he had to work so hard to get some of it back. But he did and I'm thankful for that. I don't think he's actively touring any more. The last time I saw him live was a small tour he was doing with his son. It was a great show seeing Art and his son perform together!

That's because he never sung at that part of the song in the recording. Why would he keep singing?

you are absolutely right!

Art Garfunkel! What a gift to humanity,! The day he met Paul was one of the greatest days in human history.

One of the most Amazing performances ever!! To think this may have been one of Artie's last performances at this range. Breathtaking.
Did Art Garfunkel die?
@@kfischer212ify "at this range", he wrote. As in him getting too old to hit these notes.

Art is one of the most underrated vocalists in my lifetime.

They were great
When I was a kid in the 70s,driving around listening to songs on the radio, there were a few songs that would make all of us fall silent..BRIDGE was one of them.
When they both start to sing it's almost perfect. No duo can come close to this!
