  • There's an old saying that reads 'necessity is the mother of invention' and right now we need an oven to thermoform the plexiglas windshield for the 1955 Mercury 'Elvis' so we're going to build an oven out of an old junked BBQ 🔥

    My 2 cents. There's a ton of crud in that burner box (no doubt most of it is meat drippings). Once you enclose the top and fire up the burners, all the fine particulates will circulate by heat convection and embed themselves into the softened plexiglass. I would suggest getting that burner bay squeaky clean next. Maybe even sand blast it then paint it with high temp (BBQ) paint. Then, to keep crud from falling into the burner bay, cover it with some of that perforated "firewall steel". This perforated cover would also act as a heat conductor to more evenly disperse the heat. Not too high on using plywood either. Maybe corrugated steel?

    Maybe a sheet of metal going across the bottom over the flames with holes throughout it. That way you dont flame your windshield.

    A BBQ can work as an oven without much issue but you will have some hotspots from the burners. I am sure you will be able to figure it out. I have used propane burners and made my own for a things. Right now with all the burners in the middle, it will be hotter there. Some fans to mix it and spread it is needed. I would use electric ones instead of those stove top fans because you have the ability for speed control and therefore the mixing regardless of the temperature. Those other fans will run depending on the temperature. Lower temperatures slower until they get heated up. Other than removing them, you can't slow them down or use them below the setting of the Peltier element in them. If you can only find plastic electric fans, just have the air blow through a conduit and keep them away from the heat and they will operate fine. Too close and they can over heat or melt. They do this in solar heating setups where the collector can get extremely hot. No way to mount a fan close by.
    I would think the glass transition temperature of the plexiglass glass would be different from the vinyl wrap. Both easy things to look up. If they are close to the same you should have no problem applying the vinyl on top of the flat plexiglass and then baking them both. If the vinyl is lower it would be at risk of burning and discolouring. If it is higher, then it probably wouldn't but you would have to heat it up afterwards probably outside of the oven. I hope it works out and look forward to your experiment.

    Chad. You don’t want to heat that plexiglass to quick. Bubbles will form. About 160 degrees for a good base temperature. The gasses inside the molecules of the plexiglass will start to expand if it’s to hot. Keeps this in mind. Once you get it dialed in you’ll be able to make any bends.

    I would put the vinyl on after because the outside layer would have to stretch and the inside would have to shrink. Just my opinion.

    ou may want to consider if the mould may do some warping of the mold and you eill probably want to wait to put yur wrap on after its cooled down. The biggest thing is to make sure to burn off any animal fat so that it doesn't get imbedded to the windshield and let it cool slow as possible. With the acrylic I did it has a realproblem with any moisture so the longer you heat the oven and mould the better is what worked best on the race car. Just saying. I wish you the best of luck. run a feww test pieces first ! It's really going to be great with the wrap on it ! What a great idea !

    You can tell he's a metal guy. If your going to use ply wood, make a box 2 ft high x 6 ft long x 2 ft deep. plywood comes in 4 x 8 ft sheets. split in half makes 2pcs 2 ft. x 8 ft. Cut off two 6 ft pieces and two 22 1/2 inch pieces. Nail the four pieces together into a 2 ft x 6 ft rectangle. No metal angle needed. 40 nails have held caskets together for centuries. Cut a 2ft x 6 ft piece for the top. Leave it loose to get in and out. cut two pieces of metal to fill in the bottom on either side of burners. drill and nail onto the bottom. Done no metal angle, no welding. Drop on the grill as is. Put the grill back together when done.

    I would think the plastic wrap would melt or shrink. When I was watching full custom garage and Ian did this I think he was in the 300s doing full bubble tops. But he did it just like you. Built a box and put 4 bbqs under it.

  • @antoniocovarrubias7831
    @antoniocovarrubias7831 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The plastic wrap will shrink when exposed to heat, you are better off, aplaying the plastic to your window when material is cool! On the burners to spread the heat evenly roll two pieces of sheet metal with an even opening left and right and you don’t need electric fans.

    Did I start something?.,.. sorry bout your Barbee lol. Make this dual purpose, you can bake powder coat in it as well. Just a thought here, make a false bottom with sheet metal, and vent it out both ends, this will give you excellent heat dispursement and also keep the oven section dry, propane gives off water vapor as it combusts…
    You could also build the same thing vertically, which is what I may do, and run the exhaust up
    The back side which will also help to distribute the heat evenly.. I like the fan idea…

    Hey Chad , just a suggestion, you could weld a piece 1/4” or 1/2” flat stock all the way around top at the bottom of angle iron to have solid place to screw your plywood too !!! Thanks for being so awesome & Jolene thanks for such great videography , and i understand you look amazing 😻 today !! 💕 🚗 🔥

    Hey Chad, you could also use this new oven as a rotisserie for cooking whole pigs or sheep when your not using it for windscreens. Great when your having an open day make a few extra dollars on selling food. You will attract Aussies from every where {could be a good or a bad thing} we love this sort of cooking. P.S. Jolene hit Chad for a new BBQ a super duper one.

    Might be a good idea to put a heavy piece of steel about 2 inches above the gass burners would help with heat distribution

  • @PoplarvilleMan
    @PoplarvilleMan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you should cover the pit with metal so there isn't an open flame inside the box. Let the flame heat the metal cover which will dissipate the heat even more. A "Muffin" fan in each end of the box would circulate the heat. I built a convection oven out of plywood at one time using 250 watt bulbs and muffin fans. I only had to reach 150 degrees which it did easily. Again, Opinions are like noses, we all have one. :-)

    With no fans . I can heat it up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s for powder coating.
    Simple and effective been using it 4 years now .

  • @douglasnicholls1366
    @douglasnicholls1366 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You built yourself a nice meat smoker! Put the temp gauge nearer the bottom 'cause heat rises. Fan nearer the top to push heat down. Glass on the ends would let you see it cooking. 250 F will be no problem, but I doubt you can hold 450 (powder coating) on propane. 1" styrofoam insulation on the outside should handle the heat and stabiliize things, but you shouldn't need it with plywood. Having the vinyl film on will affect the draping a bit because it will hold the drooping edges up, but maybe not a lot. Might get a goopy mess on the first try, hope not!
    With pots of water on the burners, would make a nice steam bender for wood too.

  • @rijobaabojir2779
    @rijobaabojir2779 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A 43,000 BTU propane space heater complete with fan could have been purchased for $159 saving a lot of time and effort and would likely perform better.
    Not only that, but you would have a functional space heater for future use to keep you warm in areas that might require it. No need to destroy a functioning BBQ.
    In this case I don't think Chad's brain made the most logical and practical decision. It was entertaining to watch though.

  • @2012nowornever
    @2012nowornever 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Chad I have been watching you a few weeks now. I really enjoy your show. Your oven is a good idea but I do not think you should use plywood. It will combust at 230 - 302 degrees. Concrete board would be best. hardiBacker I think.

    Maybe steel plate running length or 2 thirds the length above the flames to catch and hold the heat.. it will help hold heat and distribute the heat more evenly.. the problem with these gas grills is hot spots ..always to hot on a small.area the plate will radiate the heat evenly 1/4 maybe but 1/2 inch for sure..problem is plate is $$$$ maybe have a scrap of anything thick.. that's free...lol. the steel from an old tractor bucket would work great

    • @GottaKnowJoeHobbies

    Nice job on swapping the barbecue into an oven but you will definitely need to put something over the top of were the flames are to disperse the heat or the oven will burn whatever is in the middle. Keep up the great work the both of you 👍

  • @jimmyattard1446
    @jimmyattard1446 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chad if you add a plate of iron or steel above the burners that's the right size, it would distribute the heat all around the oven negating a need for a fan. I love this kind of enginuity. Go for it!

    Have you thought of using led strip lights behind the plexiglass in the tail lights? The led’s are cheap and easy to obtain and very bright, you can easily cut them to any length you require and they usually have a tape backing so you can stick them in place, if you’re worried about water you can get waterproof ones or you can hit them with a coat of clear to seal them too.

    Add a fan to circulate the internal hot air.

    Make a heat deflector. You can do that by making a long tray with tubes under it. If you don’t , you will wind up with a hotspot even with the fans. Put one fan in the front on one end and one in the back on the other end you may get decent circulation.

  • @rickhettwer854
    @rickhettwer854 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The BBQ was probably off in measurement because the manufacturer eyeballed it lol. I am pretty sure you will need some sort of cover directly over the burners so all the heat disperses out to the ends better, along with the fans it should heat evenly.

    How about a large sheet metal V shape a foot deep to the back, centered over the burners. Heat rises up and over to the outside edges. Bracket the poly-glass form to the top of it. You will not get direct heat from the burners and disperse to the outside where the bends are the greatest. Just a thought. IDEA***

    Chad any consideration for putting a deflector over your three burners so that you dont have a hotspot directly over flames

    Instead of plywood (which could burn) you might use light gauge metal like tin can. Great Work Straightforward!

    Line the inside of the plywood with aluminium foil.

    If I’m going to buy a new one, of course I could cut the old one. Worse case was when she came home and I was cleaning car parts in her dishwasher. I had to wash dishes by hand until I bought her a new one. Not quite on the same page. I’ve got a new wife now.

    I think the wrap first might be affected by the heat. Might want to form the window cool it then wrap it.

      I would definitely try a small piece before putting a big piece of plexiglass on there.

    The thermal degradation and ignition point of wood and plywood may be generalized by the following: 230° to 302° F (110° C to 150° C): The wood will char over time with the formation of charcoal. If the heat is not dissipated there is some possibility of spontaneous combustion.

      No matter how this plays out it’s still the best entertainment on TH-cam. Jolene’s dedication is top notch, as well as her skill with the videos and computer.

    Just an idea but the front center section of the windscreen might be very close to some of the later narrower cars. If you used one of those you would only have to make the curved corners from plastic

    Sounds like a good idea, 👍 but I think it would be better to cover the plywood inside with sheet metal. 😉

    Metals reflect heat (what u want) , wood absorbs heat , burn problems.
