What a great discussion. Even as a New Zealander these greats talking about their experiences in the big games and how they saw the flow, and influences, excellent stuff. I do disagree with the conclusion at the end though which concluded that the Boks weren't lucky to win. If you analyze the vast majority of the Big World Cup games, there's usually an element of luck, or bad luck involved, but that's the nature of the game. In the last final, there were so many elements that could have gone either way, and the bounce of the ball, luck, if you will, went the Boks way this time. Luck usually has a part to play in victories, however, in this case whatever went the Boks way, good on you guys, worthy winners. Can't wait to see you back in NZ.😁
very true there was luck. betewwn top four teams there is nothing in it they are all good on their day ABS can beat the BOKS on any day and vice versa, between ireland France ABS and boks there is not much difference they are very evenly matched, I have no doubt Under RAZOR the ABS will turn it up and other teams will have to catch up again
The ball that should've bounced for Savea but bounced for Willemse, I consider that lucky. The ABs missing 2 winning kicks with world's best kickers on the field, so lucky. But we've still worked for it and we deserve it a 100%.
A team needs to have skill and mindset in order to take advantage of luck when it presents itself. As much as the Boks were lucky, they also had their fair share of being unlucky. I mention the following: 1. Being in the pool of death. 2. Having to play all of the other top 6 teams. 3. Having to play the hosts (also in 2019) in a knock-out game and in the very stadium where France had not lost a game for ages. 4. Only being able to bring Pollard in during the pool stages. 5. Marx being injured. 6. Lukhanyo Am being injured. 7. Bongi being injured early in the final.
Definitely lucky. That's not even in dispute. Lucky that rugby is the only sport in history where someone getting sent off is virtually guaranteed in every game.
The most uphill road to winning the World Cup, and perhaps the only tier 1 nation that fields 100% home-bred players, where NZ and Australia purchase players from the Pacific islands.
That saying really applied to the Boks. The harder you work, the luckier you get. Only it's actually meant differently. The Boks really did their homework and practiced their asses off. Rassie applied statistical analysis to coach the team and prepare them. We had some luck, yes, but we deserve the trophy.

Each of their wins in the knockout stage, taken alone, could easily be characterized as lucky. In each match, a lot of stuff went their way. Yet, when you look at it in entirety, they made it thru the group of death which had two of the top five teams in the world aside from themselves, and beat three of the top six teams in the world aside from themselves in the knockout stages. So, they played all five of the other top six teams in the world and won four of those matches and even in the fifth against top ranked Ireland, they didn't use their best kicker and lost on kicks. Good points. Luck goes both ways usually. You win some you lose some. SA might have had some good luck at times but also had bad luck at times. You could also have mentioned the bad luck of losing the services of Marx, Am and de Jager. Also losing Bongi early in the final. I'm sorry but luck has nothing to do with it. It's a tough game and you are either down or up. How can someone say we were lucky, I don't understand that reasoning, if you are better on the day you win, not because of luck. Before the QFs I said the winner of France/SA will win the WC. The French turned up on the day and no team ever beats them when they're on song. Springboks the first to do it.
Luck was not involved. It was not luck that Rassie and Jacques were smarter than other coaches. How many teams would take Deon Fourie to the World Cup. Most coaches would say, "Oh Fourie is 37 and he's too short" But Rassie doesn't care about numbers. Rassie knew that Deon is an outstanding athlete who plays with heart and soul. Whenever Deon entered games, he turned things around. The same was true about Kwagga Smith After Malcolm Marx went down, Rassie and Jacques could have pushed the panic button. But they didn't. They trusted Deon and Marco to be able to play as back up hookers. Then they brought Pollard back. None of this was luck.
@@JaemanEdwardsThe Boks should have scored tries against NZ, but the All Blacks had a great defence. So please dont blame Rassie for the lack of tries. Blame the All Blacks and their fanatical defence. The ABs stopped the Irish from touching the ball down after they had crossed the try line. Then two weeks later the ABs stopped the Boks from touching the ball down. And in August at Twickenham, the ABs also stopped the Boks from touching the ball down. As an Aussie licking our wounds from this dismal world cup, I can think of no other team that played as well or with the intensity of the Boks. Luck played a little part but in general the Boks smashed everyone else in their way. Nothing but admiration for they way they played, well done Springboks.
I wanted the Boks to win but NZ were taking unnecessary risks kicking for touch when they should have just taken the (easy) 3 points on certain occasions, then they decide to kick from so far out due to desperation, and miss under pressure. Poor tactics from Foster.
Face facts fellas , in the final ,the ref made a bad call against Savea and the Boks scored a penalty ( the ref made a mistake and said sorry ) , but regarding not awarding the try to the All Blacks because of a knock on 4 phases earlier was not a case of the officials not knowing the rules , it was a case of them deliberately ignoring the rule to favour the Boks ,pure and simple. It is a sign of the corruption that exists with the rugby ruling body. It was a shame as it could have been an epic final , instead a team that played everything except rugby won , and rugby fans wonder why the sport is in decline and losing fans to other more exciting sports. There's your answer.
And the All Blacks got compensation for their rightfully disallowed try by getting awarded another knock on try so that evens it out. As for your missed kicks... That was also Barnes's fault isn't it? Boks kicked all their goals without any trouble. And one final thing that narrative about Barnes saying sorry was spun by NZ media. He said sarcastically "sorry, I did not see it that way." Also the game was even for more than 20 min of 14 vs 14 and the All Blacks accomplished nothing as well. Youre a sore loser that's your problem.
He never said sorry, your media are twisting facts. Go listen again, watch the full match and stop daydreaming about an apology that was never given and social media regurgarating the same nonsense. He said sorry I dont agree, did not see you come off enough and Ardie wasted time so the ref blew him off by saying your okay and then adamently signalled that he stands firm on his decision. So, please stop spreading lies. "Sorry" as in 'excuse me' by British jargon and added that he did not watch the replay. It was clear he was getting annoyed by Ardie. Please watch it again :) and this time listen carefully ❤
Completely. Both them and the Kiwis should make sure Barnes & O'Keeffe never have to buy a drink for themselves after knocking out the two best teams in the QFs with their utter incompetence.
Yes Ben O'Keefe made france make 50 handeling errors, miss their kicks, let their fly half kick to touch towards their own goal line with the worst kick in rugby history. BOKKE FOR LIFE
🏈🏈🏈🏈💯💯💯💯🏆🏆🏆🏆🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Of course they were lucky as well. Was it the sole reason for their win. Not by a long shot.
To win a World Cup you need a good team, good depth in the squad, a good coaching group, key players be relatively injury free, you need vital 50/50 calls go your way, you need the bounce of the ball in critical moments, you need your goal kicker to be on song, and finally you dó need some luck.
and a good referee
You mean officials that are on your side. Boring rugby won the day.
And a red card.
@lyellclare9365 you again...dude get a life
The Etzebeth try vs France - best ever individual try in WC history
The man was on fire, best in the world in his position, respect from Cymru
Rubbish
It was a thing of beauty
Boys are back!!
At the end of the day, lucky or not, they have the trophy,
They were for sure lucky. As usual. But four time RWC winners speaks for itself.
HULLE WEET NIE WAT ONS WEET NIE !!!! love for the bokke always
Ja meneer.
Will be interesting to look at the history. Has any World Cup side ever had a harder road to the final? In a row against top sides? Winning by 1 point each time? Has there ever been a harder tougher pool?
Deon looks really young when he's around these guys
Very lucky
This should have been an hour long
I'm sorry but luck has nothing to do with it. It's a tough game and you are either down or up. How can someone say we were lucky, I don't understand that reasoning, if you are better on the day you win, not because of luck. Cheslin's save on the French kick at goal was not luck, it's because he knew what he wanted to do, he committed and he succeeded because he is an excellent player, just like every player in the squad. Luck is for gamblers at the Casino, come on guys. LOVE THE BOKS AND WE ARE GOING TO TAKE THE WIN AGAIN IN 2027 😎
The Springboks definitely got lucky. Everyone knows that. Lucky that rugby is the only sport in history where someone getting sent off is virtually guaranteed in every game.
Surprising how these negative Springboks such a beautiful win. Rassie, sharpen your skills....
@@joycekweyama6383 Rassie needs to learn what a rugby pass looks like. He also needs to teach his team where the tryline is situated. The Springboks never play or win beautiful. They don't know how. Just cheap and ugly wins for the Springboks.
And 2031 have you seen the young talent coming out I know Rassie is planning ...😊
I Nickname them the "GRADER." The first thing they did, they took out the All Blacks Captain. Watch how they did the RUCKING. That is how they won against the English too. "RUCKING." Look at how the GRADER OPERATER do the new road with gravels before the sealing done. That is their style of scrummage.
WE BACK!
You make your luck, so prepare an live your life to make your luck, and so everyone is making their luck, so then the best luck makers who fit into the universes' plan will come out on top...no wait the universe will modify its plan to accommodate you luck...who knows how the simulation works...
It’s PRAYERS Not Luck. Brian Hanabana & Cheslin Kolbe together with Majority Had GOD answ Prayer. Also Hard Playing to the End and Although Kicker Was Not Always good there was other Ways that put Points on Score board.Supporters are Behind Boks not Luck and Many had x 3 Games of Anxiety and should be given Springbok Medals❤
Lucky to win the final, but unlucky to have to face England in semi. So fair enough in the end /unbiased Aussie
Deon is n yster - so bly hy het n kans gekry.Gee altyd sy beste👏👏
I like how they say US 🇿🇦🇿🇦
I agree that they weren’t “lucky”, but I do wish more South African fans would recognise that a successful kick by New Zealand might (and who knows though) have been a different result. On an aside I was fascinated by the sign in the window….a round sticker with BLK on a black background, is that saying something?
Lu ck and with the help of Barnes and his TMO.
15 All Blacks beat 15 Springboks.
14 vs 15 is not fair game of rugby.
TMO was the man of the match.
Tom Foley take a bow.
Springboks have won three world cups and one big TMO gift.
NZ captain must go back to primary school and learn how to tackle. Kickers must learn how to convert pressure kicks into points, and NZ fans must stop whining about the officials. All Blacks knew ( or should have known ) from
Scott Barretts cheap shot on Marx at Twickenham that they would get red, so Cane tried another one on Kriel ????? C'mon, in the real world, that's called incompetence..........😅
I would have to agree, Springboks were lucky
@@martjollands4200 Your captain uses his head as weapon.
Kolis charges in from 10 meters away leading with head.
This is twice dangerous as Cane’s tackle.Wait minute it is only yellow.
Luck favours the brave
Definitely lucky.
And brave..
Most coaches would say, "Oh Fourie is 37 and he's too short"
But Rassie doesn't care about numbers. Rassie knew that Deon is an outstanding athlete who plays with heart and soul. Whenever Deon entered games, he turned things around. The same was true about Kwagga Smith
After Malcolm Marx went down, Rassie and Jacques could have pushed the panic button. But they didn't. They trusted Deon and Marco to be able to play as back up hookers. Then they brought Pollard back. None of this was luck.
Rassie needs to learn what a rugby pass looks like. He also needs to teach his team where the tryline is situated.
It must be some sort of record for one team to stop two different teams from touching the ball down during the elimination rounds at the WC.
@@leoncolwin8645 Try creation is not high on Rassie's list of priorities. This is the South African rugby doctrine. You people seem fine with try scoring being a low priority. In our country that's anti rugby.
@@JaemanEdwards Well, the Boks did score 5 tries against the ABs on August 25, 2023
@@leoncolwin8645 Like I told you. An inferior team needs a helping hand dont they ? 15 v 15 the Springboks stand no chance. They just don't really know how to create tries. Just lay and pray and hope for mistakes. This is how they beat France, another clearly superior team.
Agree
Where can I watch or listen to the rest of this!?

The harder you work, the luckier you get.
They sure were
first please reply i am a very big fan
Okay, here's your reply. Thanks for being a fan.
thank you
@@greenplasticgun
Yes they were. But then again, you make your own luck...
"Were the Springboks lucky to win Rugby World Cup 2023?" Yes NO! doubt about it.
Okay mr Bitter-man 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣They still remain back2back Champs 😛
@@KO..... I am of the view, the two teams were both on the same level no one was better than the other. You cannot judge the teams, the difference in the final score is only one point.
@@nedor64 It's possible that I don't get what the purpose of world championships are, but I was under the assumption that to be called the best you need to beat everyone else to the trophy. I suppose that's not what it's about then. with regards to the one point difference, I suppose the one point difference actually means a tie instead of a win meaning that neither team is better. Thanks for pointing these things out they make perfect sense now.😉
@@nedor64 are we judging the title of World Champions on feelings now, rather than who actually won? Is that how it works now? 😅🍻🍻
@@aldobonaso3481 "are we judging the title of World Champions on feelings" Not at all, but I must say the final game was not All Black rugby they disappointed me. You won the game so 👏🤝
As an Aussie licking our wounds from this dismal world cup, I can think of no other team that played as well or with the intensity of the Boks. Luck played a little part but in general the Boks smashed everyone else in their way. Nothing but admiration for they way they played, well done Springboks.
Spot on, coming from a Welshman
Lucky? Did they enter a raffle to win the game or something.
Did you not hear about the ref raffle?
They beat all the top teams. AND have won 4 out of 8 world cups played in.🎉🎉🎉🎉
NZ are 3 out of 10 😢 🎉🎉🎉 SO Nooo!😂
No luck involved ! Dude
L.U.C.K.Y. END OF.....
Or the kiwis choked
I wanted the Boks to win but NZ were taking unnecessary risks kicking for touch when they should have just taken the (easy) 3 points on certain occasions, then they decide to kick from so far out due to desperation, and miss under pressure. Poor tactics from Foster.
They definitely choked while being down to 14 players for 50 minutes while keeping the Kickboks scoreless and scoring a try against them.
@@JaemanEdwards classic Boks always playing with 16 men 😅
Face facts fellas , in the final ,the ref made a bad call against Savea and the Boks scored a penalty ( the ref made a mistake and said sorry ) , but regarding not awarding the try to the All Blacks because of a knock on 4 phases earlier was not a case of the officials not knowing the rules , it was a case of them deliberately ignoring the rule to favour the Boks ,pure and simple.
He said sarcastically "sorry, I did not see it that way."
Also the game was even for more than 20 min of 14 vs 14 and the All Blacks accomplished nothing as well.
@@jle42 you're right, but it's gonna fall on deaf ears with this lot
no luck only skill --proven 4 times ------------so far !!!!!!!!!!🤣🤣🤣
The worst champions in history. Joke champions really.
Even gave us a yellow and France couldn't do anything.
3 of them couldn't even tackle Etzebeth 10m out. But sure. They were the best...
Not to mention they couldn't deal with 3 kicks that led to tries. But yeah totally the best there ever was.
@@markdanielleanderson4323 understandably you're not that bright - but you obviously excel at spewing utterly ignorant shite at a world class level about something you're too thick to comprehend in even the smallest way. It is the saffa way at the end of the day - and the only thing you're genuinely good at it. Obviously it's not rugby - needed the ref to get you the victory.
We won France with a yellow card and got "lucky". New Zealand could have done that too against the boks with 14 men but instead they made poor decisions on the field and then blame refs. Same old same old. All losers got to find a way to blame everyone but themselves. Hard to look in the mirror I guess :)
Definitely not. The Springboks exercised the technical skills and fought for that win . Stop laying these insultve degrading doubts to a great team.
You ask all these degrading doubts because this is not a European rich team. I'm not the only one who perceive you negatively. I've lost all respect for you
Trust world rugby to imply luck, their draw didn’t stop the boks, just cheat rather, it’s easier
It was the men themselves who asked the rhetorical question in this vid, not wr
These boys know they got lucky (as usual). But when you're so good at it, is it still luck ?
Of course the Springboks got lucky. Everyone even themselves know this. Lucky that in rughy, unlike any sport in history, someone getting sent off is virtually guaranteed in every game.
So, World Rugby is gonna milk the Springbok win till 2027? No discussion, chat, conference, podcast, interview, gathering, meeting is gonna change anything. Meanwhile World Rugby is not allowing other rugby channels to use any footage of RWC 2023 in their videos . Guys that are actually trying to advance the game and making a huge contribution to rugby in general. Instead, they gather some distinguished guests to come and discuss spilt milk. How childish can you be. Ridiculous!
