I agree about what he said about the scrum being designed to restart play. I thought the English scrum was holding its own in general. Some very tough calls the last twenty min. I wanted the springboks to win though I am absolutely tired to scrum penalties playing such a big part in the results of tight matches.
@@jamescaldwell7396 I'm absolutely tired of kicking games. Boring AF. It's the same thing every time vs England. So scrum penalties are 👌 by me. It's called strategy.
My father took me to see 1956 SA / NZ 4th test at Eden Park. SA had previously been unbeaten anywhere in the world. NZ won the match 11-5 and won the series. I remember walking to the exit and hearing Peter Jones (NZ no 8) interview on air where he said "I'm absolutely buggered." Raising a huge cheer from the crowd.
Yes I noticed the South African supporters were complaining about the ref when they were losing and England supporters blaming the ref when they lost 😂
Find me an Englishman that can give a compliment to his opponent? Now, go look at what the SA team members said of England after the game. The concept of an English gentleman is long since extinct - they only find fault and moan and complain.
England had it in the air tonight, SA had it in the scrum. Eng could not convert metres earned to tries, while SA could convert scrums into penalties. Two strategies. One worked. And yes, SA rollout out subs that play better than the starting 15. That is a strategy too. Argue with me...
It’s incredibly helpful to have little Ben OKeef in your back pocket at scrum time, he couldn’t wait to penalise England on that last scrum even though it was clearly the SA prop angling in because he knew OKeef will always give it against England.
@@johndonson1603 Guess you missed the part where Farrell questioned it and O'Keefe clearly stated there was an English knee down first before the angling in from Koch. He never denied there was angling? Original infringement got penalised correctly. Do you have any other one-sided views you care to share with us? You also carry on like a 49 Metre penalty is a gimme 3? That's still a massive kick to make. If Ben was crooked he would have marched us downfield first for a closer more guaranteed shot. Cope harder!
England never go for the tries bro. And that's their downfall because even when they have the lead they remain within touching distance of their opponents.
... South Africa conceded a large number of penalties to England throughout the game. It's partly why England were so dominant. So it's a little disengenuous to say England lost because of poor refereeing decisions against them.

@@lukelado5324yes we had no reason to win that match England dominated mostly because you were just better at kicking game and we for some reason we're also playing the kicking game although it was not working but the fact that we won that came down to the scrums and it was just Ox if Ox wasn't on that game and he wasn't fresh in those last 20 minutes he got put on we would not have gotten those penalties
@@carlosdossantos3022 I could not have said it better myself. At the end of the day, knockout games comes down to who has more points not how you got the points. And again, Ox was immense and he already wins by the eye contact he makes with the opposing prop before the scrum sets.
Obviously, these are specialists talking here, but SA executed a strategy to win the game, I don't see what's wrong with that. It's was up to England to prepare for a counter strategy or tactics to prevent their opponents from succeeding.
No, it wasn't strategy. The strategy was good. Two blundered throws by George, a kick straight into touch by Mitchell and that poorly executed up-and-under by Steward at the end were the deciding factors.
@@deenshabier7204 Not sure about blunders. But SA certainly made numerous handling errors due to good strategic kicking by England and their maul was blunted by good England maul tactics, which go to support my comment about England strategy.
THE ART OF WAR!!! In the art of rugby war, much like warriors enduring a tempest's fury, the Springbok rugby team's unwavering resolve mirrored the wisdom of Sun Tzu. As the master strategist eloquently put it, "In war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak." Hidden in plain sight the Springbok scrum manifested this principle, a silent powerhouse, ready to seize victory when the moment was ripe. In the midst of the game's intense clashes, England may have claimed fleeting victories, but as Sun Tzu wisely observed, triumphs in individual battles don't assure triumph in the war. Indeed England may have won the on-field battles, but, as Sun Tzu's timeless wisdom reminds us, victory in battle doesn't guarantee success in the war. The Springboks, akin to seasoned generals, exercised patience. In the game's dwindling moments, they seized the strategic vantage point with their scrum. They made substitutions, ceded territory, and fortified their scrum, ultimately clinching the war even when it appeared that England had triumphed in the battle on the field. It was then that England realized they had secured the battle but lost the war. In rugby, much like in war, the final score unveils the indomitable spirit, the very essence of the team that conquers to claims the entire................................................................................game.
MATT!!!! just like in football whether you win by free kick or penalty or with the corner kick it doesn't matter as long as within the rules it's win whether you like or not it's in the rules
I find it amazing how 2019 and before MW criticized the Boks for kicking too much, being boring and damaging the game. Now England applies that exact gameplan, very well and better than the Boks. The Boks had to do something else. Now the scrum is the problem. So England's kicking game is ok? Let us not forget France kicks the most of all teams, they only run the ball close to opponents 22. I assume that is also ok according MW.
At the end of the day this was a brilliant game, no matter what you say about England they played an excellent game of rugby they truly played there hearts out and left it all on the pitch. But South Africa won and that’s final congratulations to South Africa, they won fair and square. They are a smashing team. All that matters at the end of the day is that was a solid game of rugby and truly showed the beauty of the game 👍👍👏👏
SA did have the momentum in the scrums. Anyone with one eye could see that. England had ample time and opportunity, I wish people would stop going to the ref to blame. Taking a scrum at a mark is brilliant...why kick a mark out and hand the ball back to the opposition, when you can take a penalty you know you going to win and then kick it out to keep possession. Brilliant 👏👏👏👏👏👏
1:36 what ever…South Africa deserves to be there. There perseverance, persistence and resilience is what makes then a world class team. Never give up and know who you are doing it for.
For the sake of rugby as a spectacle, I am so relieved SA won. If England had won it would have potentially put the game back years. The game thrives when tries are scored, not when players rely almost entirely on the ability to win and score with penalties.
SA looked decidedly jaded there but ultimately found a way to win with solid mentality and belief in their structures. England played well, but never looked liked reaching the try line. What is absolutely clear, the draw has undoubtedly taken its toll on SA with brutal games against Sco, and especially Ire and France. England meanwhile have had a considerably easier ride, with all due respect to the teams on that side of the draw.
So it’s ok for England to kick kick kick and not even try to score tries but it’s not ok for South Africa to target scrums as a strategy? Seriously the bitterness of most of the Northern Hemisphere pundits is getting ridiculous
I don’t mind Matt’s criticism. South Africa didn’t make the rules so he’s fine to throw shade at the rules and so on and so on. That’s not the springboks problem after all😂
England are a one dimensional team but they made that limitation into a weapon last night and executed that single dimension brilliantly. Grubby, stubborn, ugly, spoiler rugby backed up with superb kicking turned into an art form last night and hats off to England for doing it. Massive respect for SA for refusing to lose.
No one seems to remember that both of England's first two penalties wqs obvious errors from the referee. What he called isn't what happened. England also got a 6 point spot to statt off.
If only so called experts can realise that 2 teams played with great respect for one another - that on the day we have to have a winner or a loser on the pitch - commentators unfortunately denigrate the spectacle into issues that suit their flattened ego’s, let’s celebrate the game people 😊 Greetings from Cape Town South Africa 🇿🇦
I have to differ a bit with Matt here, England's game plan was get a penalty and let Owen finish. It was so purely a kicking game mostly from England to get South Africa to make mistakes. In tournaments like these tactics really win you the game and South Africa was dominated by England that's for sure but South Africa at the end outclassed England when it came to being tactical. The outcome tends to supercede the how part, and South Africa came out tops on that.
If that is the opinion on the ref, then the same applies to the commentator. He's made up his mind about the SA scrum and now just specifically looking for reasons to validate his opinion. It's not a question of some teams that use the scrum to gain a penalty, all teams do it. If a team does not use this opportunity to gain ground, they might as well play backwards. Sour grapes is all this is.
Big match temperament is what makes SA so good. They just know how to raise their A- game. Springboks' mental endurance is superior! It was a tough game for SA. Yes, they don't deserve to win because England bullied them into submission, but the score says it all : England 15 - SA 16
@@oldskoolmusicnostalgia The draw was done on past rankings. How is that a free pass? Both teams had a gruelling match beforehand. What is the difference?
But the scrum rules are the same for both teams, just like the other areas of the game. Set it up and improve. They complained about NZ getting scrum penalties against Ireland. Lousy punditry.
England took advantage of an easy course to reach the semi in good shape. Moreover, SA was tired of the match against France, and yet they won. England are even lucky to be in semi. In its place.
🇳🇿 🇿🇦 (and Australia) plays with their soul - that is what makes them the best...they learn and improve with each match (win /lose) and they always move forward with no regrets. Those who plays with heart (like France/ Ireland etc.) When they win its short felt jubilation, but when they lose its heartbreaking and it scars them and they hold onto that.
Nonsense - where's Australia's soul at the moment? They are at an all time low. in rugby Doesn't look like there is much learning or improving going on. Maybe they should try the 'heart' theory.
Matt Williams definately has something against the Springboks...been very critical of them and the way they play. Great teams find a way to win especially when they play poorly, as did the Boks today. Matt has to accept that scrums are an integral part of the great game ( some teams are better at it than others) and he should stop blaming the referee decisions. O'Keefe made incorrect decisions on both sides today and last week...as so all refs. But we cant be relying on the TMO for every decision. The TMO should only be involved in instances of serious foul play etc. This running to the TMO for almost each and every decision is what is killing the game!
So because South Africa have found a way to take a “way of restarting the game” into a way of dominating opposition that’s bad? By all means any other team can go and try that but if you not as good at it as South Africa it’s not fair? If England come and play all black rugby today they will lose handsomely so they came up with a plan that almost got them to win but when South Africa find a way to win it’s not fair?
This should tell you all you need to know about the genius that is Matt Williams “Scotland won three games out of 17 under William’s tenure - against the Tier 2 nations Japan and Samoa in 2004, and against Italy in the 2005 Six Nations. Williams controversially discarded Townsend - a celebrated figure in Scottish rugby, then aged only 30 - a week prior to the unveiling of his first national squad, despite an admission that his team lacked experienced centres.” Sourced from that infinite source of wisdom - Wikipedia

I dont want to go into detail about the pool choices because thats just another messed up topic with NZ basically sliding their way through against lower tier teams but for our team to still come through regardless of all that makes me so proud and i know that even if we lose in the final our boys will get a hero's welcome when their plane touches ground in SA.
😂 Ian is always wrong. Wrong about Ireland DEFINITELY beating NZL and wrong about the ref. SH vs NH mentality
A lot of those scrum penalties were very harsh. That’s a fact.
Yep.
He’s the David Haye of rugby 😂
@lukelado5324 mate no point in arguing SA kids are bias asf

This is coming from an Irish person please correct me if I'm wrong, but when it comes to Aussies and Kiwis they will never admit the other side done well its a rivalry thing abit like Ireland and England except with Ireland and England it goes abit deeper than a friendly rivalry at least in Ireland's case anyway 😅
England did not score a try, secondly they were already celebrating a win in their minds while the game was still on . South African player’s vast knowledge of the game is their strong point. These guys are fighters and are mentally strong. They scored a try and never believed that the game was lost up to the last minute.

When both team’s supporters blame the ref then the ref had a good game.
Yes I noticed the South African supporters were complaining about the ref when they were losing and England supporters blaming the ref when they lost 😂
The world should respect how South Africa plays, the team plays as a family, more than a team. So no team can beat a fighting spirit of a family 🇿🇦🤔
I read your comment in the voice of Dom (Fast & Furious) 😂
Ohhh shhh you clown, you know SA got a lucky win, England played much better
Find me an Englishman that can give a compliment to his opponent? Now, go look at what the SA team members said of England after the game. The concept of an English gentleman is long since extinct - they only find fault and moan and complain.
They keep talking about individual great players, but forget the togetherness/synergy of the team. Teamwork is key.
@@wrndlabstoo much english football crybaby vibes infecting rugby
Cope harder!
your or the problem is England think thy are the godfathers of the world, their royal family attitude is their downfall, look at the cricket yesterday
England never go for the tries bro. And that's their downfall because even when they have the lead they remain within touching distance of their opponents.
@@CalebsBikeLife Oh no, his knee grazed the grass on a slippery ground. That's so much worse than deliberately boring in to milk a penalty!
Man for years people used to say South Africans complained about refs...the past couple of weeks people have really showed their true colors.
... South Africa conceded a large number of penalties to England throughout the game. It's partly why England were so dominant. So it's a little disengenuous to say England lost because of poor refereeing decisions against them.

So according to Matt we shouldn’t use scrums to get penalties. There are different ways to play rugby, and this guy will always find fault with how South Africa plays. This oke is just such a paw paw

Jeez guys, give the Boks some credit!! 35-7 against the AB's ? They were awful tonight against England, and won!But the days to say that they represent merely a setpiece type of game are looong gone. On any given day they can play ANY type of game better than any other team.

Those scrum penalties were very harsh. Independent of the scrum, England dominated the match.
The Boks don't know how to play well in the rain, England had that advantage
The decisive try had a clear double-movement by Fourie in the build-up. 7 points in a 1-pt game. Ref handed them the game, totally undeserved.
@@raychadwick6917😂. There no blunders by South Africa? England lost get over it. They were not good enough.
@@deenshabier7204 Not sure about blunders. But SA certainly made numerous handling errors due to good strategic kicking by England and their maul was blunted by good England maul tactics, which go to support my comment about England strategy.
England played a frustration game ,playing negatively and the boks took time to adjust to this negative play
Bom squad 🇿🇦 you have to accept them.
meh, it was touch and go, not a dominant performance.

MATT!!!! just like in football whether you win by free kick or penalty or with the corner kick it doesn't matter as long as within the rules it's win whether you like or not it's in the rules
So sad for them, yet they wanted to win a game on penalty tries. But they have a problem with us using the scrum to our advantage. A win is a win🎉
Matt is living such a sad life, wouldn't feel like this even is my enemy wins...its sad🤮

Happens all the time, happened to England in 2019. In the final the better team will win, good luck to both.
So it’s ok for England to kick kick kick and not even try to score tries but it’s not ok for South Africa to target scrums as a strategy? Seriously the bitterness of most of the Northern Hemisphere pundits is getting ridiculous

Dear Matt. At any time in the game, you pressure them to give away a penalty. That's what the Boks did in the scrums.

Well done Boks, we win no matter what!
No one seems to remember that both of England's first two penalties wqs obvious errors from the referee. What he called isn't what happened. England also got a 6 point spot to statt off.
If only so called experts can realise that 2 teams played with great respect for one another - that on the day we have to have a winner or a loser on the pitch - commentators unfortunately denigrate the spectacle into issues that suit their flattened ego’s, let’s celebrate the game people 😊

Mat isn't happy with the boks winning this game at all🚮🚮
England played their best game of the Wc, Boks their worst. Yet they still managed the late game control and win 🏆. That says a lot.
We needed 10 minutes of "reasonably good playing" to beat England. England needed 70 minutes of their best performance to almost beat South Africa.
The outcome tends to supercede the how part, and South Africa came out tops on that.
the Boks fucked the Poms up
Haha, thanks Matt, your comedy knows no bounds.
England lost it because the Englishman needed to join the Welshman; the Scot and the Irishman in the pub :-)
Southern hemisphere are on top of world rugby. Too good
The Boks beat the roses @ their best while playing @ their worst. Two words," Championship Team".

Of course and sometimes they have a rigged ref to help them.

@deise5989 rugby politics in Australia...but never underestimate the Wallibies as well....those youngsters will be powerhouses by the next WCR.
This should tell you all you need to know about the genius that is Matt Williams
“Scotland won three games out of 17 under William’s tenure - against the Tier 2 nations Japan and Samoa in 2004, and against Italy in the 2005 Six Nations. Williams controversially discarded Townsend - a celebrated figure in Scottish rugby, then aged only 30 - a week prior to the unveiling of his first national squad, despite an admission that his team lacked experienced centres.”
