That particular toe stand tap move is not as difficult as is looks! But she is so immensely talented. And she makes everything look seamless and flawless.. Love her
Well, not underrated by one Fred Astaire. He did several movies with her. Some of Fred’s most exciting and innovative dances were with Vera-Ellen, i.e., the Mr & Mrs Hoofer number in “Three Little Words”. She was remarkably strong, the head spotting in her turns is like magic. In this number here, she has to jump-step up onto the first tier of the platform she will dance on. That first step is almost up to her waist, and her step-jump-step up is completely effortless. Thanks for posting, I’ve never saw this one. She was a gift to us.
JUST LOOK AT HER FLAWLESS TECHNIQUE. If you took a snapshot of her dancing every nanosecond, every photo would be perfection. I don't think any dancer had this kind of all-around talent, in every conceivable style. She never ceases to amaze.
@@soniasonia2518 I actually believe the fact they were black may have "held them back" to some degree, you know? But among their fellow tap dancers, their name always come up on top. They were absolutely BRILLIANT.
The fact that Gene Kelly said she's the best dancer. Says a lot. Not one dancer male or female at that time could compare to Vera! She's the best of the best and my dance idol.
Vera Ellen was no doubt one of the most versatile dancers ever to grace the silver screen in Hollywood. She could do ballet, tap, ballroom and jazz dancing all with equal ease, and she had a lovely face as well. She was simply phenomenal!
As I watched this, I was thinking the very same thing. This isn't just a great solo, showcase performance of Vera Ellen's talent, this is one of the greatest solos ever filmed! Excellent design, choreography, technique, and production. Amazing!
Her name is up there with the best dancers not just of her era, but of all time. They just don't show movies from her era that much anymore which is a shame since they made far better films back then (the musicals they made back then in particular are fantastic). And unlike a few of the other great dancers from that era (like Ginger Rodgers and Rita Hayworth to name two) Vera never did much in non musical, non dancing roles, so that limits her exposure to modern audiences. But she was an absolutely brilliant dancer.
I did notice that. Lot's of long shots. And when edits happen it could (probably not) be going from A cam to B cam. It doesn't seem like any 'time' jump. Very hard to do and well done! Back then, they seemed to just shoot it and not 'fix in post."
I can't watch a modern Hollywood film, the cuts are just too short. You're just noticing something on the screen and it's gone. I'd rather watch old black and white Japanese films
I can't watch current dance pieces either because of the frequent cuts. Every 1 or 2 seconds these days camera angles change. It started happening because of MTV music videos and now that's all camera people think of.
I watch a movie she tapped in when I was a child with my grandma - don't remember which one - but the next week, mom went out and bought me my first pair of taps. I've been tap dancing ever since, thanks to Vera Ellen.

Amphetamines(excessive diet pills) and cocaine were fairly common and promoted to be used by actresses to increase stamina, lose weight, and perform uninhibited by fears because of studio production pressures. She is extremely talented regardless, but who knows whether or not all that "energy" and those fearless stunts were done naturally or "enhanced" with common pills etc given to actresses back then...:/
I recently mentioned that Vera Ellen was the BEST FEMALE DANCER Hollywood ever had. It is evident from her moves that she was a trained Ballet dancer. She mastered an eclectic collection of dance forms. Vera was the epitome of poise, charm, style and grace - all rolled into one. I wonder if Tommy Rall ever got to dance with her. She took my breath away with her dance numbers in Belle of New York, but seeing her in this number, I'm literally spell-bound. In a word 'TERRIFIC' !!!
Vera Ellen ; my all time favourite female dancer. She could do it all with that beautiful smile and those dimples! Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney have commented on what a hard worker she was . Always stretching and rehearsing routines in between takes. Never complained. She was quick to say she was no singer and not much of an actress ( we all disagree) but that dance was her true passion. I could watch her dance for hours. We are so honoured to watch her talent. Cheers for upload:)
Vera is certainly the most talented dancer. There’s just something about her style that is so different from all other dancers. It’s probably because she can combine tap and ballet and look unusually graceful while hoofing. I could watch her for the rest of my life and never tire of it.

So jealous of her leg muscles and her incredible physique! Also keep in mind that back then they filmed dance sequences all in one take so her stamina had to be out of this world. Definitely one of my favorite dancers of all time.

This is from the Samuel Goldwyn movie Wonder Man, also starring Danny Kaye. The great musical score you hear is from Ray Heindorf and Louis Forbes, who mainly worked on many Warner Brothers musicals in the 1940s and 1950s.
Its is incredible that she had the versatility to do this and to dance the modern "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" ballet with Gene Kelly and to do passionate partnered ballroom and tap with Donald O'Conner and Fred Astaire.
