I didn’t confirm it myself, but I heard the reason the show’s creators gave M. Night the go ahead on directing a live action movie was that he showed them a four hour long script they liked. The problem was no studio wanted to make a movie that long so they forced him to cut it. Also, M. Night was apparently one of the only people who was really nice to the child actors. If I’m wrong feel free to correct me, but hearing this made me hate this movie SLIGHTLY less and just feel bad for the guy
Lmao no. He said he wrote it for 7 year olds. Dude never even watched the series. He caught glimpses here and there while his 7 year old daughter had it on tv. 150 million dollars....
My favorite part was the beginning of the movie where they had a emotionless exposition robotic back and forth conversation between Aang and Katara in the south Pole tent/igloo. I'm sure you know which scene I am talking about. In theaters, after that scene played, I was like "oh no.... this is what the movie will be like, won't it?". I was wrong. It was so much worse.
see what saddens me the most about this movie is what they did to Aang's actor. In reality, he's a bubbly, happy go lucky kid that fits Aang perfectly, but the shitty script and poor direction sucked the soul out of his performance. Zuko's actor is actually very good in genersl, but again, the diectino was just awful and he's better suited for comedy roles anyway. Honestly, those two and the costume designers deserved better than this piece of flaming trash of a movie
I agree, I actually like the actor of Aang, he fits visually very well (and that he does martial arts already, is a plus). So it's really sad to see the movie ... or not ... because there is no movie ... I don't know what you guys are talking about or what this video even is ...

If they wanted to “honor” the cultures maybe they could’ve gotten the details right, like the different symbols for the water tribe. It just contributes to the idea that everyone within a certain bending culture has a homogenous culture. The two water tribes specifically had different ways of life and even different styles of bending. But no bending had “style” in the movie so I guess those fine distinctions were too much to ask
@@FionaA17 To be fair there the director really didn’t have a choice in that. The producers of this movie owned the father of Katara’s actress (who is a big named producer in Hollywood) favors and were more or less forced to cast her as the leading lady of the movie. Some in the production even noted that her acting was ‘subpar at best‘ but they had no choice to put her in the movie. This directly affected Sokka’s casting since it would look really awkward for a Native American brother to have a white sister, so he was casted to fit the actresses race then anything else. So yeah this whole thing wasn’t a result of white washing, it was a result of Nepotism.
@@brandonlyon730 It's also really sad how M Night is getting blamed for many things in the movie that were due to producers and higher-ups changing things.

@@sethtipps7093 but then that make all the fire benders loose their visual representation of inner strength, like when zuko switched sides or Zhao or the difference of iroh to other firebenders
@@sethtipps7093 So how would firebenders have conquered the world? I just want to remind you that even in the world of avatar, the majority of the world is water. And the remaining part is earth. The only moment, and I mean ONLY moment, where I felt the movie did something slightly better from the show was with the PURELY VISUAL portion of Princess Yue's sacrifice in the movie. In the show, while it is certainly a lot more emotional, impactful, and simply makes more sense; the visual aspect is just Yue touching the fish with a little light thing that happens and she collapses. That's all fine and dandy, much easier to animate than the direction the movie took it, but I do think the movie version looked better. In the movie, as far as my memory can recall, she lays down gently in the pool next to the dead moon spirit and her hair floats delicately in the water. Then we see the white from her hair drain away magically into the dead fish, restoring it's life but taking hers. We know that the only reason her hair is white was due to the moon spirit giving her life as a baby so it makes sense why that representation of the life the spirit gave her could drain back into it. Visually it just seems much more interesting then walking over and touching the fish and her hair remaining white. That's just my view anyways. I tried really hard to take something good away from this terrible film and that's all I could muster, sadly. Let me know if you agree.
Yes, the movie was awefull. But the Livestream was funny! But hey, getting tortured live on TH-cam is now a thing! What Movie is next? Percy Jackson? Eragon?

When I was younger I really enjoyed this movie, I liked the magic and the koi fish stuff, similar to the Percy Jackson Movie. But, when I saw the original, when I read Percy Jackson, I was so disappointed with the adaptations, because I could be so much more... I'm glad I know the originals, and I'm just waiting for Avatar Live Action in Disney+

Loved the rant, even though I haven't seen the series or the movie. I just love you, Merphy.
I always like to remember that there are a couple things about this movie that I do like! 1. The score when Aang went into the avatar state at the end and raised the wave is absolutely beautiful! That scene also has some cool imagery. 2. The actress they got for Azula owned her role at the end. When she smiles to her father, it is so sadistic! It’s as if she’s thinking about how much fun it’s going to be going on this mission and hunting the Avatar down.
I’ve heard that the kid who played aang was like a lot like aang in real life on set, full of energy and playing pranks on the cast members, but then they... made him act like this??
Zukko:"I must restore my honor!" Me:"because your father, the scar and so..." Zukko:"no! Because I have seen my character in the ATLA movie!!" Iroh:"zukko, don't let the angry take you..." Zukko show the movie to Iroh. Iroh:"I will burn everything!!"
Is someone gonna tell her about the Netflix live action series coming out of ATLA with the original writers and music producer along with (i forget his name) Zuko’s voice actor as a cameo.
Dont get your hopes up, they did make Korra as well and approved this movie. I think its better if its left alone, instead of trying to make more money from it...
I went to go see this movie in the theater with my best friend. We were both huge fans of the show, and so was her boyfriend (he got her into it). He refused to go with us because he heard the reviews were bad. Me and her are both stupid optimists, though, so we were like, "Oh it can't possibly be *that* bad." Her first comment when we left the theater: "Wow, I'm really glad my bf didn't come with us." Tbh I never walk out of movies. I think I've done it a total of two times in my whole life. But I almost walked out of this one, and it was because of how they botched Aang & Zuko's "We could have been friends" scene. Aang & Zuko's relationship is one of my favorite, favorite parts of the show, and that scene is one of my favorite scenes. I couldn't even believe it when I saw it: they set everything up the exact same way the show did, but then when it came time for that little exchange of dialogue, the movie was like, "Hahaha nope" and Aang just left. He just left! And then they had the nerve to throw that line randomly in at the end, when it made no sense and didn't have nearly the same emotional impact. I was so pissed. There were a lot of bad aspects of the movie that I could just laugh and shake my head at, but that one thing just really made me rage.
My summary: "The Music is fantastic. Wait this is a Movie?." I really think musicians get done poorly with movies like this because, Like Daniel Greene says, "The creators are so full of their own ego that they don't appreciate the people that end up creating the art/music for them."
So at the very end of this movie we briefly see Azula and she's played by Summer Bishil who went on to play Margo in the tv show The Magicians which she was amazing in! It leaves me wondering how she would have been as Azula if a second movie had been made. I think she actually would have made a pretty good live action Azula, she's a great actress, however she'd still probably have been held back by Shyamalan's directing.
The only thing I could defend is Zuko and Iroh being able to produce fire without a source since Iroh was teaching Zuko in the show how to make the fire come from his breathing and Iroh, well, he's the Dragon of the West and is a member of the White Lotus, who all have super cool powers. (And yes, there's quite a few instances where he behaves very fatherly towards Zuko. I really liked him both in the movie and the show.) But the rest... I really get all the frustration.
My favorite part of this movie is that it was so forgettable that I have completely forgotten 99% of it. My least favorite part is that I still remember how atrociously bad it was.
The people who like the new pronunciations because they are closer to the Asian names, I point out that the creators of the AMERICAN cartoon made the names and they should be kept the same if the film is meant to satisfy the fans.

The first time I saw the “stomp the yard, slow rock moving” scene, I genuinely didn’t see the rock. It was so small, moving so slow and kind of blended into the background ... mix that with the fact that there was no reaction from anyone else in the scene and I was just super confused. I remember my friends and I were so excited to see this movie in the weeks leading up to its release...but then it hit theaters and the first reviews began pouring in. We went to see it a couple days later; I'd drastically lowered my expectations by then, to the point that I was pretty sure I'd walk out of the theater feeling extremely disappointed.
It turns out even *that* assessment was too optimistic.

This movie is the reason Toph is blind.
He said in an interview that he didnt watch the series, but his kids liked it. It explains a lot...
Dev Patel would have made a great Sokka. Someone who is funny but also smart with great leadership skills and a good heart.
@Black Ninja Patel has such good range. He is really talented.
I agree, I actually like the actor of Aang, he fits visually very well (and that he does martial arts already, is a plus).
So it's really sad to see the movie ... or not ... because there is no movie ... I don't know what you guys are talking about or what this video even is ...
I rented this movie soon after it was available on dvd, thinking "It can't be *that bad." If they wanted to “honor” the cultures maybe they could’ve gotten the details right, like the different symbols for the water tribe. It just contributes to the idea that everyone within a certain bending culture has a homogenous culture. The two water tribes specifically had different ways of life and even different styles of bending. But no bending had “style” in the movie so I guess those fine distinctions were too much to ask
They literally used white people to play sokka and katara
Fiona A yeah it’s outrageous

"Cue the rock!" near the end of the livestream absolutely killed me I was still giggling five minutes later.
(also I still haven't actually SEEN the movie, I couldn't make it it through the first five minutes. I *did* watch like the second half of the livestream, however, and I'm so sorry but I DID greatly enjoy y'all's pain)
I liked that bit too, actually

I always like to remember that there are a couple things about this movie that I do like!
1. The score when Aang went into the avatar state at the end and raised the wave is absolutely beautiful! That scene also has some cool imagery.
2. The actress they got for Azula owned her role at the end. When she smiles to her father, it is so sadistic! It’s as if she’s thinking about how much fun it’s going to be going on this mission and hunting the Avatar down.

I went to go see this movie in the theater with my best friend. We were both huge fans of the show, and so was her boyfriend (he got her into it). He refused to go with us because he heard the reviews were bad. Me and her are both stupid optimists, though, so we were like, "Oh it can't possibly be *that* bad."
Her first comment when we left the theater: "Wow, I'm really glad my bf didn't come with us."
Tbh I never walk out of movies.
Hi Merphy, do you think you’ll give a ballad of songbirds and snakes a go and maybe a review? Loved the vid by the way :)
