Remember folks just because you saw the video doesn’t mean you’ve learned the technique, practice and repeat until your muscles can remember it because in a real threat situation your brain will go in survive mode and it’s no longer about what you know, it’s about what you can deliver in that state of mind!
That’s why stress management is absolutely essential in self defense training.

The main lesson here is once you start in on your attacker don't stop till they are neutralized. The fist is known as a hard body weapon and should only be used on soft targets like the solar plexus, liver, neck and the groin. Hard targets like the head should only be hit with soft body weapons like hammer fist, palm strikes and edge of the hand.

Was attending a Filipino martial arts school years ago when Vunak introduced this technique on a national level. I have used it successfully several times, and still practice it to this day. Important to remember, and many of the commenters below missed this point, this is only an entry technique. It gets you into trapping range where you can deploy your headbutts knees and elbows. You dont start with the straight blast. You start with your eye gouges, throat shots, ear slaps, knee or crotch kicks. You cause pain and distraction first, THEN straight blast, THEN use your finishing techniques.
Thanks for the video Jason. Keep up the good work!

Is that practiced on the speed bag?

    • @SnakeBitBob1982
      @SnakeBitBob1982 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@jerryvandevort2366 You could get started practicing on a speed bag to train the rolling motion of the fists during the straight blast but the straight blast gets its effectiveness by your body forward momentum while pummeling with those rolling fists. I wouldnt stay on the speed bag after learning to roll your fists because the speed bag requires you learn a cadence on an object that is providing an equal amount of resistence. When you are straight blasting a person you are not getting that equal resistance with each punch. Typically when you straight blast on a person you will first encounter their arms as they either cover or stick an arm out trying to keep you at bay. Your body forward momentum and rolling fists will overcome their arms and then get you into trapping range where you can transition to your headbutts, elbows and knee strikes. Also, one of the main points when learning the straight blast is where to position your elbows so that you maintain maximum power and quickness while rolling the fists. If your elbows are too far out to the side you give up power for speed. If the elbows are too close together you give up speed for power. You have to practice to find the best position for your elbows so you have a good mixture of power and speed. As a side note, if you are straight blasting in on a person and they stick an arm out to keep you at bay, dont pass up that opportunity to wrench that arm and disable or break the elbow joint if the opening exists. You very well could finish the fight right then, before you get inside of trapping range, by taking advantage of them sticking their arm out and keeping it there. Train for that possibility as well. Hope that helps.

That technique is actually taught in Wing Chun and is called chain punches. The fists come from the center like you mentioned, as most techniques in Wing Chun, and with the thumbs up. The arms have to be fully extended in a quick manner to increase its efficacy. It seems easy, but takes some time to master proficiently. Thank you for the video!

As a martial artist since I was 15 in 1973 (I'm 64 now), I love this technique. The motion of the fists reminds me of the action of the wheels of an old western locomotive, like "The Wanderer" from Wild Wild West, with good old Jim & Artie. I think another great name for it would be "The Locomotive", because you drive forward with that motion until the threat is neutralized.

What you demonstrated was Wing Chun but not the Jeet Kune Do straight blast. Lee’s straight blast is a non-telegraphic strike with your strong side forward. It’s like a fencing lunge that Bruce applied after watching his brother who was in fencing. It’s more powerful than a jab and it sets an opponent up for whatever finishing move it opens up. It is best applied before or after a stop kick and sets up reverse punch or whatever follow up finish you like. I like your videos by the way.

I trained with Vunak and his version, rationale, variation, take, etc, is based off a different structure and approach. What you saw in this short video is nothing compared to how it is taught by Vunak. Vunak's method is practically a scientific approach, an updated way to apply the straight blast taking into consideration the quality of the opponent that you may be facing: a wrestler, a BJJ guy, a boxer, etc. That being said, look into Vu's videos on TH-cam, he's been around for ages, he's been called the father of modern scientific street fighing for very good reasons.

I taught a coworker (security guard) a similar move. I drilled her to use body mechanics and repeated the minute-long lessons several times per shift. It was a palm strike to the face or chest, whichever was open, followed up as needed. She was shy, and the other guards would sneak up on her and try to scare her. One day the site supervisor did a no-no and grabbed her while shouting BOO! BOOM! She executed a perfect palm strike to the chest and dropped the supervisor on the floor. He had to visit the emergency room after the shift ended. She didn't follow-up because the attack stopped, she acted out of conditioned reflex, and she was shocked that she managed to put a man out of action--training works.
Besides, it's not right for a supervisor to do that on his subordinates. Afterwards, that supervisor was very careful to startle that coworker from behind a barrier or well out of reach--and he didn't grab her. Training by proxy? "Don't touch!"

A few things to clarify. This is the "Chain Punch" move in Wing Chun. Learning the punch technique is critical because the damage not only comes from the speed & repetition, but you actually position your arms like a battering ram. Your shoulder, elbow, and wrist are locked straight at the end of each punch for maximum damage (so it's not a flurry of jabs).
Also WC deviates from traditional styles like American boxing as you're taught to not only block and counterattack in the same move, but you follow your counterattack by closing the distance and blitzing your opponent and overwhelming him/her with this Straight Blast technique to end the fight as quickly as possible.

My understanding of a straight blast is that a fist should go straight out towards it's target.
Then it drops down slightly and retracts, in a straight line, to allow the fist of the other hand to blast out in a straight line.
I was taught this by Grandmaster Victor Kan Wha Chit who taught Bruce Lee the first section of the Ving Tsun 'Siu Nim Tao' form.
Your demonstration, although I'm sure is effective, has a circular aspect to it that, some wood argue, has nothing 'straight' about it.

If I could offer this advice , straight blast is used until you get a connection for most part . We want to connect so we can use our heavy tools such as head butting, elbows and knees or maybe into some type of submission like a rear naked choke . If you are blasting you must know when to stop because if any gaps in hitting time allow will allow your attacker the ability to shoot in for take or hook you whatever . Its rare when a straight blast is an end in itself because its not power punching but its rapid punching to keep attacker from getting back into a fight . Yes straight blasting is a good tool but it has its limitations like anything else .

Agreed, uppercut as he’s speaking, if you’re in close it’s nearly impossible for him to see coming because it’s below his line of sight. You can use the palm of your hand as well to prevent injury.

These are normally called 'chain punches', at least what you were demonstrating, called that, because one punch comes after the other in a straight line. A straight 'blast' is typically one quick straight punch that blasts in to the target, and of course can turn into chain punches. You showed Bruce Lee clips, notice he just did one punch that blasted through the opponents defense.

Everyone is geared to protect the face. Bringing up your hand to punch the face triggers the opposite protective reaction from the bad guy. There is no such thing as a fair fight. You have to be proactive and strike hard and fast without telegraphing your strike. I think the "straight blast" might be a good movie effect but in CQB when it really counts and you have to use your hands, either a hard and fast stab to the larynx or a hard upward palm strike to the nose is really going to be effective at giving you the element of surprise and stun the opponent. The other option if you have the room is a powerful open-palm slap to the ear. Very painful and stunning allowing a further continued attack with other strikes.

So to look at the fact of how many school type tests Bruce Lee went through to get to where he was, which is a standard to martial arts, watch the UFC competing with Bruce, is this:
A helpful hint of learning self defense, is look at it like being in a school, take one section at a time, studied it for a week, and then as in any class take the test. In other words, see if the movement is complimented to wanting to be accomplished, or is it zig zagging on its own, preventing you to be fluent to go through a start and finish recognition quickly that now will over time allow for this move to continually improve, because it is just that, a simplified move, one of self defense that need to be accomplished when the opening is available, and not confusing to repeat as its zig zagging will influences.

But try the rolling blast that turns to elbow up close take out of your attacker fast, and hard to stop for the hands are moving so fast they can hardly get to see them; but do feel them and the elbow blast as well is ready at any time to finish the attacker ! takes practice but effective !...

@@JasonHansonSpyBriefing A combat veteran recommended the Vunak Rapid Assault Tactics to me recently, Having sparred with it I like it very much. Excellent video.
Additionally there is another UK based self defense program that looks a lot like a very simplified version of the RAT system. It is called The Approach by Eddie Quinn(I learned this one first). Have you ever looked at it? What are your thoughts?
Personally I think the RAT system would hold up much better against most opponents. Those center line chain punches are real hard to stop. In sparring I found aiming for the chin with them was better than the face, because if you are too high you hit the teeth or nose, and if you are too low you get their throat, both of which do a really good amount of damage.

This is good when I studied Teoul Moon Kung in Korea, Songtan-chi, we here taught & demonstrated to hit in the eyes and throat. The Chin, Nose, mouth are hard bony areas that can injure you.
Strikeing a person in the eyes while cause pain and temporal or permanent blindness. A attacker that can see you , can effectively attack you ;)

That's the WC straight blast. The jkd straight blast is a squared up boxing blast. Both are good the WC blast is like a boxing shoe shine. The Jkd straight blast has more power and is a little less quick. Both are good. I use the wC blast to get some one off of me quickly if they get in top of me. The Jkd blast, is more of an offensive weapon

Do you do a demonstration on the blackout technique because I have been practicing it but I'm not sure about form or if I'm doing it right. Like how close do I have to be. What is the appropriate speed? Do you put your hands up to block first then get within a couple of feet standing directly in front of your attacker to implement this combat technique?
