I was doing martial arts for four years, but it's been a little while cause I've been taking a break from it. This video is still excellent for me though because my elbows are rusty and not as efficient as they need to be. This guy knows his stuff! Thank you for instructing us Jason.
Can confirm. Took a horizontal elbow to my right eye sparring a couple of weeks ago. Wow. I definitely needed a minute plus it cut the hell out of me. Bled all over the mats. And this was an accidental, not-full-force elbow. Btw. you are keeping your hands nice and relaxed during the strike, perfect form. I’m surprised you didn’t mention that key detail. Rookies instinctively clench the fist as if throwing a punch. It sure took me a while to stop doing that. Thx for the video. Great instruction!
Shoot your thumb to your ear. It’s a good way to train. Using the slap technique also works great. In a slapping motion rotate your thumb to your own face as you are about to slap the aggressor. It turns into an instant elbow strike with force.
Perfect for crowded metros at midnight when the tough intoxicated individual trys punching above his/her weight on you. Preserve you hands for when you need to gouge or dislocate.
Nice combo! I do a few elbow combos in my muay thai classes during bag and padwork. I like to start with the "hey back off" pose because you can use your arms to block, hand trap, prepare for a clinch , gauge distance (it's basically a long guard) and set up some juicy elbows.
My father a Korean Veteran and all-round badass! Infantry combat Veteran in some of the worse battles boxer street fighter and Martial arts student elbows was some of the first things he taught me . He stopped at the drive-in movies so I could watch Bruce Lee as a child .
The thing about throwing elbows is, practice. You need to train at this, hitting at least a heavy bag. The reason is, throwing elbows is nowhere near as "natural " as throwing a fist. Properly gaging distance for an effective strike takes practice, and learning how to set up such strikes with proper body position takes repetitive training to be fast and effective. After that, then it can be devastating..
Hey Jason, Just found your channel and subscribed. You've got a lot of good advice on self defense and I'm enjoying what I'm learning. What scares me is, with the way the world/ country/ our towns are changing, we read about random acts of violence where someone steps out and just clobbers some unsuspecting person in the back of the head. Unless you've got eyes on the back of your head you'll never see it coming. So I guess it's be aware of your surroundings and avoid places where these people can hide. Speaking of being aware of what's going on around you, My wife and I were recently over seas visiting family. We walked into a grocery store to do some shopping. I noticed 2 foreigners walking through the store not buying anything. They would pick up the occasional item but put it back. I have no survival or self defense training but things started kicking in. I started keeping the shopping cart between then and us. I started noticing items in close proximity like fire extinguishers, scissors, brooms and being in the meat department, knives and cleavers. after we approached the register and paid my wife went over to the security guard and asked him to escort us to the parking lot. I told my niece about it and she told me that those two guys were there because they loan money to the employees. They were just checking to see if the people they loaned money to were working. I was amazed at how fast your mind can change from, what are we going to buy to where are there some potential weapons i can get my hands on if needed. Sorry for the long comment but I just wanted to share that story.
First and foremost, thank you for subscribing. I am glad that you like my content. It's very important to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Regardless of if they are foreigners or from the US, there is a possibility that out of 40 people in a grocery store, SOMEONE is up to no good. I've seen it with people of all races, creeds, genders, ages, etc. The best thing you can do is to keep learning, educate your family on situational awareness, and be prepared to act in case of an emergency. I love long comments so no need to apologize. God Bless you and yours. 🇺🇸

As a guy who has been on the receiving end of a elbow strike, and a guy who has used elbow strikes in real world experience I can tell you they are highly effective and will straight out ring your 🔔.
A super close quarters strike, do not walk up to someone and try this, it could fail. Also learn the art of NOT challenging someone, even if they are in the wrong. Say nothing and walk away is still the best move when you can employ this avoidance technique.
@@JasonHansonSpyBriefing I got your book, Alone and Unafraid. incredible knowledge. I really appreciate that you actually gave it away. As of last night, I found out that a career criminal killed the Chief of Police in Brackenridge, PA. I knew the man. He was a good man and a good officer. I moved from there 2 years ago and don't go to the area much anymore unless needed. The knowledge that your books and videos give are imperative to anyone who wants to survive the future. No matter who that may be. Thank you again for your knowledge and I am going to get RAT fight as well. God bless.
Not just your arm strength put your body behind any blow to your attacker; by twisting the hips toward your attacker and do not forget the neck and bread basket and between the legs; it hurt both males and females too !...
Probably not a great idea. You have a lot of small bones in the back of you hand! You can’t afford to mess up your hands! Your pretty much done at that point.
Do you have a pair of shoes with a HARD heel ? STOMP on the toes of your attacker REPEATEDLY as hard as you can ! If he can't walk or stand, your toe strikes WORKED !
I had a bag on a short post, with base, that you fill with sand, I used to tip it over, then father yelled at me for "hitting it too hard!!🤨😒 Then i wanted to send it thru the wall!😠
after being politely warned, not to scare me, when I had hiccups,(as kid) family member tried to scare me- snuck up from behind, in shock I whipped around, my elbow accidentally brushed their face- next to their eye. 🙄
Have you ever had an elbow strike to the ribs? I have. Its highly effective too. Fully capable of cracking his rib. Or an uppercut elbow to the solar plexus. But your comment misses the point: NO single strike is guaranteed. So yeah, if you feel comfortable with your opening move being a knee-to-groin strike, then great. But then IMMEDIATELY follow up with an elbow (and the groin strike may make him bend over so you CAN get an elbow to the face.) Also, don't discount the possibility that Mr. Badguy is wearing a cup. Another reason to not rely on "one option".

I like the alternating elbow combo.
Nothing so painful as stepping on a Lego with bare feet in the middle of the night. Great advice here, love your videos.
Glad you enjoyed it, Jim. Thanks for watching. Keep safe and God bless!
After the upper cut depending on circumstances down with the elbow hitting the eye will give you a chance to get away. Just a helpful hint
A great hint at that. God bless 🇺🇸

Normally I don't care for shows like Reacher, but the characters and directing were motivators. Early on, Reacher showed good use of elbows.

Elbows are very hard and tough compared to the risk of injury to hands and wrists too.

One of my moves is to come in close, hands up, elbows tucked in and deflecting his blows. Once I'm in, elbow strike.

I think id have more power striking with back part of elbow/tricep area

Great video. Where do I get a bad guy dummy like Bob?
Poor Bob catches hell in your videos
Is this supposed to twist your tricep?
"Bob" looks like a more effective striking target than my heavy bag. Where do you get one, are called "Bob" or by some other name?
I have always thought the chin was a poor target because it is so bony, but an elbow is even bonier, and a good choice to use against someone's chin.
Doesn't feel good in the solar plexus, either.
