    As someone who has worked for BMW for 9 years in service I see alot of comments lacking experience. They replace the entire engine because of liability. Replace the engine you get warranty coverage from 0 miles on that engine. Once they rebuild anything that goes wrong down the road is their responsibility.If that rebuilt engine drops a valve or whatever you can blame it on them.The problem is all that labor comes straight out of the dealers pocket because it would be blamed on the technician doing the rebuild. It's the "It worked before you touched it" people that ruin it for everyone else. With an entirely new engine the dealer is covered and so is MB north America. That labor and parts are covered by Germany where the engine is sourced

    I had a buddy that bought a brand new Subaru STI and had the first oil change done by the dealer. The dealer forgot to add new oil when it was done and when he drove off the engine completely destroyed itself. Subaru replaced the engine at no cost. Things happen. Keep your head up!

      CreateYourWorth something similar happen to my mom . She took her brand new civic to the dealership for an oil change and these dumb asses didn't tighten the oil drain plug and while going on a road trip , the oil fucken drained completely. The dealer ended up paying for our towing , our motel for the night, and for the new oil change .

      CreateYourWorth Relatives 7 series was serviced at BMW of Manhattan. They didn't put the drain plug on properly. As he was driving across a bridge after hitting a pot hole shortly after he got a warning message but could not pull over soon enough as no where to go so the engine was toast. BMW of Manhattan tried to blame them and say they must of had it serviced elsewhere. Took months to argue and get a new engine, no loaner either. After that they never purchased or leased another BMW as BMW of Manhattan was the only dealer close by to service it.

      AutoVlog out of curiosity- has either the dealership, Mercedes-Benz corporate (USA or international) or AMG contacted you to offer their apologies/sympathies/condolences? I only ask because I recognize that your ENTIRE channel is dedicated to "The Beast" and that your knowledge/opinions/recommendations stem from your first hand experience in the automotive industry coupled with the CORNUCOPIA of personal research that I'm sure you've done and then have been kind enough to share on your channel...so what you say/feel/experience - is pretty relevant...
      And your experience (not only with the hydro-locking but also with the rear-differential lube job you had issues with) and the fact that you have made it MORE THAN CLEAR - this car is your ultimate culmination of hard work, determination & ingenuity - I thought maybe they would have reached out to you and done/offered you something - and I'm not talking other than to call and say "sorry - we understand these things happen etc."?
      Because honestly - do they "understand?"
      Do they know what it's like to eat dinner with your wife just to have to excuse one's self to make a mad dash to the parking lot to make sure no one has parked near them??
      Do they know what it's like to be on crutches - and STILL you park far enough away from the mall that you need a shuttle bus to shop?
      Do they know what it's like to pick up your child from soccer practice and his friend needs a ride home as well -- so you tell him only if he gets in an over sized trash bag first - because no one sits in back seat?...
      We are a different breed us car lovers...cars are not just pieces of metal to get us from point A to point B - they are mobile pieces of art which directly reflect the driver's taste, personality and attitude...they are more than driveway occupants - they are family members.....

    For all the people defending Mercedes engineering, I love their engineering, but this is definitely a flaw there should be a mechanism on the intake to prevent an overload of water from entering, this isn't a track car, it's a daily car and it should be made to withstand high rain

    • @niuhuskieguy
      @niuhuskieguy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Ronit Setia the problem is the time it would take for such a system to detect that kind of water and shut down/close an intake before it gets to critical engine parts. If not done right, you'd have a car shutting down every time it rains.

    10:25 a hyrdolocked engine would have its pistons and/or cylinder walls damaged to the point of deformity. there's nothing to be rebuilt from in the first place.
    i just wanted to say that this is extremely rare. and i doubt any off-roaders would survive a garden hose shoved down their intake which is essentially what you went through. as far as i know none of the "reliable" cars y'all wrote in the comments has protection against hydrolock. it has nothing to do with built quality of merc/amg. unless you are the type of person who complains about a boat not being able to function on land.

If your streets are regularly flooded or you regularly need to drive through pools of water, don't get that car. Simple as that. You wouldn't buy a regular Smart car and expect to drive over boulders with it.

      Not even that, a standard C probably wouldn't have had any problem - this is a high performance car. It's Bi-Turbo, it has near 2 Bars (290 PSI) of Boost Pressure. What do you expect if you get slashed with a wave of water? It's unpleasend and very sad, but stuff can happen. It's neither bad design, nor is it bad driving.

    Gee, just pull the plugs and spin the engine over to get the water out. Change the oil and it's good to go. As long as its fresh water and not salt water, not a big issue. Over reacting from hell. I've been a Tech for 35 years and I've seen many a engine take a big gulp of water. As long as compression is good and no bent valves from the hydro lock it will survive this no problem. Calm down and keep it simple, it's going to be OTAY. Stop the over thinking of the engine taking a drink.

      I suspect its a Merc quality thing like with the diff. Instead of just fixing what got broken you get better quality if you just replace the whole damn thing. Though I suspect if the insurance takes up the cause they'll talk with the repair shop and see if it's worth buying a new engine or if it can just simply be repaired, depends on what the adjuster feels is the right course and the insurance company is going to do what is cheapest for them.

      MacSaab93 I think his MB dealer shut that down real quick since he was wading through water by choice. I don't think the splash caused this but more of the fact he may have accelerated into the wake or hit a bump causing a large amount of water to get sucked into the intake. Insurance ain't gonna cover this.

    • @ToysRForever
      @ToysRForever 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Why should it be covered under warranty? If you go trough a big puddle of water, brand should cover the damages? He didn't film it so we don't know exactly what happen. What may be something normal for him may not be for some cars or at least for most of the cars he has driven. I think this is an insurance issue assuming he has weather and natural catastrophes coverage but it may have a hard time with the insurance company. They may say it was just his fault and he should have avoid it. One thing is going on a normal road and all of sudden you land on a road completely covered by water another thing is getting casual water out of no where.

      Grippen, there are such things as common occurrences. Driving in rain is one of them. At that rate, you could blame almost ANY failure on the road to the driver.

      Mihaly Lukacs. I agree with you . That's why they test cars in every condition and every altitude. The car should not need a complete engine of it wasn't submerged period. My Mercedes E class coupe 2014 needed engine bearings with 25k on the car. It cost $6,000 to repair. Thank God they decided to cover it under warranty after fighting them for one month.

    I can understand you're gutted Mike, I would be. I own a couple of Merc's and have driven in severe weather without problems, but because of reduced visibility in heavy rain I tend to drive a lot slower, what sort of speeds were you going? As the AMG drivers manual doesn't state only drive in dry conditions your engine must be covered under warranty, if not why? Is MB putting the blame on you for this failure? You mention insurance, car insurance only covers accidents theft etc? where do they come into this? Hope you get it sorted soon.... life is a bummer sometimes.

    • @Yikesforsure

      G G Insurance also covers major mechanical items of your vehicle that you damage while driving i.e. Slamming car into a pothole that destroys suspension (no body damage), or driving in an unfortunate situation that causes your engine intake to receive water. Although this sounds like a major design flaw by MB, this was caused by the driver even though it was the driver doing something as normal as driving in the rain. Based on that tiny yet major technicality it shifts responsibility frm Mercedes to the Insurance company that covers this Mercedes. Most insurance claims agents would deem this a total loss based on the parts cost, shipping of parts cost, and the absurd Mercedes dealer service hour rates. Let us not forget this is an AMG so the engines is nearly half of price of the vehicle. In the car insurance world, any repair that results in an amount that is half of the vehicle's worth is deemed a total loss or "totaled". This is unfortunate because either way there's a significant rate increase in Mr. AutoVlog's insurance policy.

    bad luck man! And bullshit to people who say German cars aren't reliable! German cars, if serviced and looked after, will go on for 300K - 450K miles without a hitch, everything that happened with your C63s has been caused by human error and not the engineering or quality of the vehicle it's self. BMW, VW etc are fantastic cars. They wouldn't be so popular here in the UK otherwise, and it rains plenty here! it was a wrong place wrong time situation that would have killed any engine. That's such a shitty situation. I hope she's fixed soon and back on the road.

      It simply isn't human error. No car should shut off like that from rain. I've seen a dozen perfectly-maintained German cars die before 50000 miles due to electrical meltdowns. Something like a Ford Focus, Fiesta, and or many Japanese cars WILL go on for 200000 miles needing only basic maintenance. This sadly just isn't true of German cars.

    Wow, this sucks. Quite surprising too. You were really unlucky here. This is a bad comparison, but I had an old Pontiac that I used to drive in college; got caught in a flash flood and drowned the engine. Pulled the plugs, blew the water out; ran about 5 quarts of oil through it and changed the oil again 5 days later. Did the same with the transmission fluid. I put another 20k miles on it, sold it to my cousin and they put another 100k on it. Finally retired it at 195,000 miles.

    Hydrolock is virtually impossible. Somebody is telling you what you want to hear. This is a Mercedes design flaw. You shouldnt be talking to your insurance. You should be talking to the Dealer!

    • @neilreid9005
      @neilreid9005 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @we all so bad- strongly agreed. I've had a hydrolocked engine back in the day. The engine has ingest enough water for long enough that least one cylinder is flooded on a compression cycle. You couldn't hydrolock a V8 with a garden hose; you need to submerge the intact completely for seconds and then blow out the air filter on the way.
      The dealership's line "it won't start" is a dead give away- you can't turn over a hydrolocked engine. That's the "locked" part. If you did get it to turn over, you'd break the rings and possibly punch out the piston head. Then you'd hear lots of banging and other evil noises. Not sure what happened but it wasn't hydrolocked. The air filter saw water, sure, but nowhere near the volume you need to lock even one cylinder on a large V8. Sorry bud. Hope it all worked out for you - you seem like a genuinely cool and nice guy.

    Im curious as to why insurance would be involved? This is or should be warranty replacement I would think mercedes should be kissing your ass, a car that expensive should be better engineered so that cant happen. They should be embarrassed honestly. And now your without your AMG for months...again they should be kissing your ass..

      Matt E wow....its completely on them and trying to weasel out of it. Id ditch that car the second its fixed and tell mercedes to shove it. Dream car or not thats not how they should handle this, its the complete opposite in fact

    • @niuhuskieguy
      @niuhuskieguy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      redstang70 Why wouldn't insurance be involved? The issue was caused by weather, no different than if a tree branch fell and busted the windshield. In this case flood water of some sort entered the engine. It may have been a poor design choice to mount an air intake low, but Mercedes is far from the only manufacturer that has done that, and most owners manuals will say you should not be driving in water that can reach the undercarriage anyways.

    • @redstang70

    I got a 2017 cla45 AMG.. no issues yet for one year and I drive the car hard and the way I want to.... gotta enjoy something you worked hard to obtain and maintain it. The only problem I have is the some rattles(Fixed, happens a lot with CLA and C class) and brakes making noise.. doesn't happen all the time.. but for an AMG brake to make noise is kind of embarrassing.. but I love my car so much ... I'm obsessed with it.. check my videos if you guys want to see it.. new body and interior. Best one on the road :)

      I've had two E63 and now an AMG GT. The brake noise happens because the brake pads are cold. Usually happens to me in the mornings but I simply drive it hard for a bit then brake hard to warm up the pads. That usually gets rid of the squealing.

    While I have never had so many issues with a newer car, I am a vintage car guy, and my dream car is a 1967 Corvette coupe big block manual trans. During the 3+ years I've had it, I've probably spent almost as much on it in repairs as I paid for it, and it was not a junker. But I refuse to give up. If I run out of money to fix it, I will park it till I get some more money. Some would call that an obsession, and maybe it is. But it's what I want, and I don't feel the need to justify it to anyone, and neither should you.

    Hey buddy, nothing uncommon, I used to tow cars for a living. Knowing where the air intake is for your car is usually handy to know. I am curious if your insurance covered the repairs... FYI this is common place when theres decent rain in my area of the globe, Not just Merc either... The lower the car is to the ground the lower the air intake is the greater the chance of this happanning. Really it comes down to being mindful of your surroundings and I know in the rain thats a little hard to to do but then again, sometimes it cannot be helped.

    This happened to me 3 years ago in Scotland. Flooded roads, went thro a deep puddle, car stopped, yes, ingested water. Car was Mercedes CLS350 with only 800miles on the clock. Upshot was car was written off by insurance. Dealer told me that morning they recovered 3 Mercedes & 5 BMW's. All the intakes are mounted low down & so are the computers which get ruined so Mercedes & BMW owners watch when driving on flooded roads

    Sorry to hear of your headaches. I do all the work on my cars one of which is a Merc. That whole story sounds funny to me. It isn't easy to hydro-lock these cars especially from a splash. I just hope that dealership isn't taking advantage of this situation. Believe me when I tell you they aren't as honorable as they would have people believe. Yesterday I called for motor mount price & part #. They refused to provide part number fearing they'd lose business and their price was double what I can get OEM mounts for. I understand making a profit but doubling prices is not honest business to me. Good luck and I hope you'll find a good mechanic after the warranty is up because they'll rape you at the dealerships. In the future use the Mercedes Forums as the community will give you great advice and resources for parts etc...
