  • We give the Kärcher wet sandblasting kit another try. This time we want to sandblast a larger area in order to be able to estimate how much time and how much resources it would need to sandblast the entire boat! Is it even feasible for us? And what about the flash rust?

If you use jotun epoxy 87 flash rust is no issue . You don't need to use karcher sand , normal dry kiln sand is as good and cleaner

I have heard that before that flash rust is no issue for Jotamastic. Still can't shake the feeling that a thick powdery layer of flash rust decreases attachememt at least a little bit though. In the end we removed the flash rust before painting anyway.

I hydro blasted my catamaran back in the mid 80's and used 3000# of sand at 4K psi to remove all the epoxy bottom paint from over the years.

Could you catch the sand with tarps on the floor and reuse it? ⚓️👍🇬🇧😎

Yes you can catch a large fraction of the sand if you tent in securely. Without tent the sand will spray quite far, but with tent it will collect on the floor. We have done that to see how wepl it works and managed to sand an additional 3m2 with recycled sand that initially was enough for 1m2. Keep in mind though that the sand will loose its edges when recycling and might not be suitable for all applications anymore. It was enough to blast of old antifouling but I am not sure how well recycled sand would fare against proper rust.
      All the best!

Dry kiln sand is a lot cheaper . About 7€.

Sure, for us also availability was an issue. Not sure where I would get that on Gran Canaria. But if its available that might be an alternative.
