I just put the rear in the low position to give the bike a lil more nimble feel but I wanted to know your thoughts. My concern is the lower BB on chunkier trails ? Your thoughts ?

I would love to swap out my sus for fox factory. I’ve heard that grip2 damper is pretty sick! Perhaps down the line a bit. I did actually just make some big changes to my setup. I’m still testing and filming for the Video coming soon.
Hey Mate, Great info on your channel about the EVO, I am about to get my hands on a 22 SJEVO frame... I've waited 9 long months for it to get to New Zealand! Hopefully you've still got yours. I hope you don't mind a few questions about a factory shimano set up as I'm going build mine up with shimano components and there's not a lot of info on EVO/shimano combos out there... if possible can you tell me: The spacer set up of bb (does it have a 2.5mm spacer on the drive side between bb cup and frame)? The spacer set up of the crank - Are there any? Also interested to know the number of chain links from factory? i don't want to go too long as I've seen a few with damaged chain stays - i notice on your video you have tape on the chain stay - has the bike suffered any chain rub damage? Any help greatly apprieciated Regards Simon
As for the tape on my chain stay, I’m not sure if this is specific to me but My chain stays always get damaged just behind the front chain wheel. I’ve always felt like it was dirt/rock coming up and getting wedged in there but I guess it could be from the chain. Regardless, I always stick some gorilla tape right there to avoid the damage. Thanks for watching my videos and I hope your build goes swimmingly.
Ugh, the first half of my response got cut off. I basically just said I’m not we’ll versed with the various crank/bb configurations out there and I’m not positive on what to look for in regard to your spacer questions.
I used to ride a fat bike on my trails in Colorado. Occasionally a hiker would comment, "look an ebike". I would stop, turn around and go and explain to them that the only power on that bike was coming from my legs. I was an idiot.
I’ve been running slack and high for about 6 months now. I literally just changed the bar and stem today and set it to neutral position so we’ll see how that rides.
Are you still riding high and neutral? Did you like that position? I rode low and slack most of the summer but switched to low and steep at the end of summer. Low and slack is great for steep stuff but think the front end was too loose on cornering. The steep setting certainly corners better. Going to try the high and neutral next.
@@edlawrence2643 I’m still high and neutral. Still liking it. I liked the Feel of slack and low a lot but I got a lot of pedal strikes. High setting has worked better for me.
'Preciate the feedback on your experience with the Evo. It recently popped up on my radar as maybe a scoot I want to test out. Been checkin' reviews, and yours came up. That was some burly trail sections you threw at that bike, and on their own, were an impressive testament to the Stumps' ability. The terrain has a very 'out west' feel (Nevada, Cali., or Arizona maybe??). I'd be interested to know what bike you previously rode, and weather you did any comparison vids. Also, have you done any garage 'design' vids. The little bit shown, looks pretty squared away. I'm always looking for cool ideas on garage set up.
Hey Mr T. Thanks for the kind words! My previous bike was/is a Commencal meta HT (hardtail) I rode that exclusively for a few years. Prior to that I had a 2017 Giant Trance Advanced 2. Also great bike but nowhere near the 2021-22 stumpy evo. I didn’t make any comparison videos to these bikes tho, unfortunately. As for my garage, it IS DIALED. It was one of my covid-projects during lockdown and I’m proud of it. I’ve wanted to do a “garage tour” on the channel for some time so check back in periodically because I’ll get around to it eventually!
Hey Bryan, Its a Shredding Spree fender by mucky nuts. It simply zip-ties onto the the top of the fork lowers and also to the arch. Im happy to send you one if you venmo me a little $. Otherwise you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding one that fits your fork at your local bike shop because they’re pretty universal.
Very nice video! So i am planning to get one of this evos. Im 5’9 and cant decide if should i get S3 or S4. Cant find a shop that has those size for me to try back to back. What do you guys recommend? Thanks
Good question! It’s really hard to say what you’d like better but a gentle rule of thumb is: Do you feel like you’re the type of rider that weaves through trails finding the clean lines, strapping turns and boosting off whatever bumps and jumps you can find? Then size down. (S3) Or do you like to plow through the chunk a little more? Seeking more stability than nimble-ness? Size up (S4 in your case) With all that in mind, I have no idea what ride you’re coming off of so I don’t know what you’d be comparing to. I’m 5’10” and ride an S3. I like a ride that feels playful and nimble. Having said that, my S3 still plows when I need it to. Plus with the adjustable geo you can make the shorter bike longer and the longer bike shorter. Hope that helps.
@@ShreddingSpree hey thanks for responding. Yea i dont really like hitting big jumps and i like the more stable feel. I think i will go with the S4 thanks for the info.
@@ShreddingSpree yeah going from a full size mountain bike to a BMX….it’s just weird. Sent my friend your video as he just picked up this exact bike, same package from Open Air in Ventura. He was lucky to get such a great bike at a time like this for $4300
I think it does. When the rubber is cracked I feel like that’s an indication that it’s hardened which would obviously reduce traction. Also, the internal threading of the tire carcass isn’t meant to be directly exposed to air/dirt/water either so overall I’d say the integrity of the tire is compromised.
@@ShreddingSpree well could be and don't look too confidence inspiring... But still happy with it 😊 Good video and great bike 👍 hard to not love the bottle cage tool
@@nicolehill5348 the difference between slack/high and slack/low is pretty crazy. You should try it just for science. Slack low feels like the bike is glued to the ground
Hey, did you have to fix the brake rattle somehow ? Not sure if it's the fins or what exactly makes that metalic rattle when you hit something. It seems to be the issue with shimano 4-pots.
I’ve heard of this but I haven’t had this issue with these slx or the xt’s on my hardtail. I’m pretty sensitive to rattles on the bike too. I dunno. 🤷🏼♂️
It IS a low bb overall. I’ve ridden the bike in Sedona and Simi Valley which are both quite rocky and haven’t had issues with hitting the frame or chainring so I dunno, some people might hit more things but I feel like I’m pretty conscious about lifting the rear if I feel like Hitting is a possibility
Hey dude, I’m loving the channel! I recently got lucky and found a new 2021 expert build. Because of an injury, I haven’t been able to ride at all for the last two months so I’ve just been staring at it in my garage and filling my time reading through the evo thread on the pinkbike forum. Turns out that last bit was a mistake: all the stories of cracked down tubes from run-of the-mill rock strikes has me a bit freaked out. I live in SoCal too and random rocks kick up somewhat regularly where I tend to ride, but I’ve always had alloy frames and haven’t given any thought to it. What has your experience with that been like? Any damage to the down tube underneath the guard?
Hey Jason! Thanks for the good vibes! Congrats on the sick bike! What a find in these times! I haven’t had any issues with rocks damaging the downtube. I think the factory protection is pretty solid. I’ve heard some big knocks on my downtube several times and haven’t incurred any damage beyond a bit of a bite out of the rubber guard by the bottom bracket and a couple small scratches from the same instance. I’ve also heard that spesh is pretty great about warranty and crash-replacement issues so there’s always that. Remember, the bike is a “tool, not a jewel” and it was designed to mash down a trail. Heal up and ride the shit out of it!
Great review. Love my 21 evo comp. Only real complaint is maybe the high speed compression on the fork is harsh. Feels great jumping, climbing, turning but chattery high speed roots and rocks seems jarring. Another guy at the lift park with same build randomly asked me the same thing so maybe its not just me. I'm considering switching to coil or maybe grip 2 upgrade. I definitely need to check out the specialized calculator.
Most of what I ride is high speed chatter. There are times when I do think it’s a little harsh off the top of the stroke in the fork but in all fairness, I got this bike after riding nothing but an aggro hardtail for 2 years so this bike is already exponentially easier to hold on to comparatively. I’ve looked at doing a grip 2 upgrade myself as well. Still not sure what I’m gonna do
I would try pulling the fork apart first and checking the air shaft to make sure its clogged up with excess grease. I have serviced hundreds of Fox forks and most of them come clogged up from the factory. Removing this excess will make the fork perform as intended and feel smoother over chattery terrain.
Quick question. Do you have chainstay clearance issues when shifted down to your smallest cog? I just built up a Stumpjumper EVO frame and used a Shimano XT 12spd group set with a 30T chainring and the chain is almost sitting on the peak of the chainstay guard. Your bike has the same setup, just SLX, so I figured I’d ask.
@@ShreddingSpree Interesting. Mine is so close to one of the tips of the guard that I had to shine a light to see if there even was a gap. I’ll try riding it first to see, but I think I may have to go up to a 32T. Thanks for the reply!
@@matthewmcnutt6052 I just checked mine this morning when I saw your comment. It may have been different before I put the mullet link on tho. I don’t remember.
Do you know what size volume spacer you added. I wanted to do the same thing. The suspension curve is not progressive enough. I have the parts but prior to installing I looked up the token max from fox and the .6 is the factory installed on my S4 and it's the biggest fox says to go... For now I've been dealing with it.. What spacer are you running, for how long, and what is the 4 digit code on your shock? I'm nervous about exceeding the compression ratio between my legs
Hey Alex. Mine had the .6 spacer in it. I swapped that out for the .86 spacer. Do you have a link to the page where fox says not to exceed .6 in the dpx2 shock? Haven’t heard of that. Seems odd that fox would sell a spacer kit for that shock but limit you from using half of the sizes. 🤷🏼♂️ I’ve got 6 rides on it. No problems at all. Best it’s ever worked. The code on my shock is D82R
@@ShreddingSpree right on thanks. I don't have the link handy but I went as far as emailing fox service and they confirmed .6 was the max, super disappointing as I ordered the spacer kit expecting to increase it from day 1. I had the same sort of issues with a stumpy comp LT from 2019.
How does S3 fit? I have same height but shorter legs so thinking about evo with possible mullet link and upgrade the rear to nicer 27.5 hub. Only legit mullet set up would be between evo and new Bronson. Thoughts?
S3 is a good size for your height. You could do S4 too depending on your riding preferences. I don’t think Mullet-ing the Evo is going to bring the rear end lower to the ground to make it easier to reach with your feet. My understanding is that the mullet link alters the angle of the rear triangle so the geometry isn’t changed by running the smaller wheel. HTA, BB height, STA, etc should all be the same. (Which is good) I’ve seen that Bronson. SICK bike. I haven’t ridden one though so I can’t comment further than saying it looks nice.
@@ShreddingSpree short legged riders prefer mullets to avoid the "butt buzz" of 29er on steep descents, not to mention snappy feeling of the bike. And I agree that S3 would be good for my size. Only down side for Specialized is that one cannot slam down a longer dropper post due to short insertion length, is that correct?.
@@radidoc4832 also true about the dropper post. I have the oneup 210mm dropper inserted as far as it’ll go and it sticks out 2 3/4”. But I also think the seat tube on that frame is rather low. So while I do have more than 2 inches of post showing out of the frame, it’s still low enough that I’m able to run the 210 and the seat is still well out of my way when it’s dropped
Local shredder ... right on! ... those trails look familiar :) I've had the expert evo for a bit over a year now. Fantastic bike! Only issue I've had is a creaking sound thats coming from the BB area (probably the BB) ... I've had it since day one but too lazy to investigate and/or take it back to the LBS and have them deal with it (since I bought it new). Other than that, flawless. BTW, how well did your offset spacer sit in the headset? I tried to go with the -1 degree setup but there was a slight wobble to the spacer (the 0 degree was a perfect fit in comparison) so I just left it alone and still using the 0 degree. Did you have any inconsistencies with the fitment between the two spacers? I've been meaning to reach out to specialized and have them send me another spacer. Lastly, I've had a few friends warranty their spec tires that had the knobs peeling right off. I think it depends on who you talk to over at S or LBS.
Yo! I’ve used both headset spacers that came with the bike and I haven’t had any fitment issues. I’d definitely check with a spesh dealer about it. Bummer to hear about the BB creak too. That would drive me nuts. As for the tires, I don’t even care anymore. Maxxis tires are much better anyway (in my opinion) Sure I don’t really feel like I got my monies-worth out of the spesh ones but I’m not looking back.
@@cs.adventures as a fellow 5’10” person you know we are always right in between medium and large. On bikes with modern geo I tend to lean toward the mediums to have a more playful and nimble ride. I’ve got 2k miles on this bike and I’ve never once wished I’d gotten the bigger one.
@@ShreddingSpree haha yea its tough being right in the middle. Awesome though. Im looking at getting one just needed help with sizing. It feels good on the downhills as well? Cause i want it a bit smaller to maneuver and jump but want to make sure its still good on the downhills
Adam, I just peeped your channel to see what you mean by “street.” You’ve got some trials skills my dude. Pretty dope. Keep shredding! I don’t have a really informed answer for you here because I’ve never ridden trials and the last time I was riding street I was probably 15 years old on a 20” bmx. BUT… When I think “street jibs” I definitely don’t think 29er carbon Mtb. And when you’re doing a lot of bunny hops onto ledges, staircases, etc I don’t really think 150mm of rear travel is a great fit either. Honestly If it were me, I’d be getting a smaller bike for all that. Probably a dj or a trials bike based on what I just saw in the few clips on your feed. If you’re looking for something that’s a good trail bike AND something you can street-jam on I’d look at a shorter travel alloy trail bike like the nukeproof reactor because it’ll be a bit lighter, more responsive on the street stuff, and alloy stands a better chance of standing up to the occasional frame-case on the concrete.
Dude died after the e bike accusations 😂😂 I am absolutely loving mine!!!! Same crash score over here as well mine was while trying an endo 😂 Question for you! That one up dropper post can you tell me when it’s fully slammed into the frame how much post you have sticking out? I’m either going with the 210 or 180 depending on how far I can slam it in there lol
Hey man, hope you’ve been well! My one up 210mm is in my seat tube as far as it’ll go and it sticks out 2 3/4” It is literally the limit for my frame/height combo because it fits me perfect when fully extended. If I were you I suggest going for the 210 and shimming it down if it goes up too high.
@@ShreddingSpree Thank man! I have been good trying to ride as much as possible an and cbeen loving it! The 2 3/4" is to the top of the insertion tube collar?
You told us you have "Butcher" on the front but did "not"tell us which model you have on the rear ?. If they are failing it would have been particularly beneficial to tell us which one of the Specialized tires it is.
Assume you meant running** but ruining works too, lol. Things can only last so long! They’re race face Chester pedals. They’re cheap and have always worked well for me.
It's somewhat of an oddity to see a TH-camr keep a "rig"... of any sort... mostly stock for so long. Refreshing tbh... most channels I see on the tube include useless upgrades for content, to attract clicks and net likes. For the record, I mostly follow MTBr's and Tacoma channels... lol
Yeah that’s honestly how I’ve always been even dating back to my motocross racing days. Stock bikes just always seemed to be less maintenance. 🤷🏼♂️ I also was never really into dumping a bunch of cash into pointless upgrades like anodized parts. (And I worked behind the parts counter at a moto shop) Unless something is giving me issues Or I really think it’ll improve the ride I’m not really in a hurry to buy things. Plus it’d be a poor investment for me to expect any $ return for that stuff on TH-cam. 😂

"Lack of engagement in rear hubs", when you say illogical stuff like that, explain it. All have have full engagement none of them "spin freely" for any period of time, so you have to explain what you mean if you expect us to follow the point you are making.
Lol. “Illogical.” Sorry to confuse you. I felt like it was clear in context. By “lack of engagement” I didn’t mean “complete lack of engagement.” What I meant is “low engagement” as opposed to “high engagement.” While referring to low engagement, when you transition from coasting (or ratcheting the cranks) to pedaling there is a dead spot in the initial pedal stroke where the cranks actually DO “spin feely” before the freehub engages to propel you forward. This sometimes delays acceleration enough that it causes an issue when timing your pedal strokes over obstacles which could result in pedal strikes and power output mismanagement. On the “low speed/heavy landings” I noted in the video, that ping-sound is caused by the rear wheel actually rolling backwards slightly before the pawls in the freehub catch the grooves in the hub body. This quick and high-torque action makes a loud “ping!” And I imagine could cause increased wear on the system over time. These scenarios are virtually non-existent in high engagement systems because there is no dead spot in the initial pedal stroke. I hope that cleared some things up for you! Let me know if anything else needs more clarification! Have a great day and thanks for watching!

Great review - thanks very much!
Think you'll be happy with wtb vigilante and trail boss tires. I've always liked spesh tires until I tried these. Never going back
I’ve never tried WTB sneakers. I’ll have to give them a look!
What upgrades are you looking at? I switched out the rhythm fork on mine for a perf elite grip2, saves about a pound and the damper feels amazing.
I hope you don't mind a few questions about a factory shimano set up as I'm going build mine up with shimano components and there's not a lot of info on EVO/shimano combos out there...
if possible can you tell me:
The spacer set up of bb (does it have a 2.5mm spacer on the drive side between bb cup and frame)?
Thanks for the review!
I used to ride a fat bike on my trails in Colorado. Occasionally a hiker would comment, "look an ebike". I would stop, turn around and go and explain to them that the only power on that bike was coming from my legs. I was an idiot.
😂🤣
Great review!! Curious what geometry you ended up liking best?
Which front fender are you running? I am having a hard time finding one that fits the 36 Rhythm shocks. Thanks for the review.

Or do you like to plow through the chunk a little more? Seeking more stability than nimble-ness? Size up (S4 in your case)
With all that in mind, I have no idea what ride you’re coming off of so I don’t know what you’d be comparing to.

@@ShreddingSpree true👊🏻
Have the same on the front tire but does it really have any impact with cracked rubber ? no issues with sidewall rips or anything like that
I think it does.
But still happy with it 😊

5‘10 and Size S3… Good choice or would you recommend S4 for a guy your size after you have done 600miles?

Hey, did you have to fix the brake rattle somehow ? Not sure if it's the fins or what exactly makes that metalic rattle when you hit something. It seems to be the issue with shimano 4-pots.
I’ve heard of this but I haven’t had this issue with these slx or the xt’s on my hardtail. I’m pretty sensitive to rattles on the bike too. I dunno. 🤷🏼♂️
Hi how is the Bb high the numbers show it is 340, isn’t too low ? Do you bump rocks ?
Thanks !
Great review mate
Hey thanks Kane!
Great review . You can ride 🤘🏽 bad ass bro
Hey man, thanks for the kind words!
Is it a quick low to high change or vice versa do you have to adjust the chain from bb adjustment
Hey Ricardo,
It is a pretty quick change. Maybe 15 minutes.
I had to adjust the B-screw on the derailleur when I changed the BB height.
Yo! I also have 30t on the front. When I’m shifted down into the smallest cog there’s roughly 1/4 inch of clearance over the tips of the guard
@@kinch04 I have heard the same! Pretty sure I read it somewhere as well
Confirmed with fox it didn't change for the stroke length in 21
How does S3 fit?
(Which is good)
I’ve seen that Bronson.
@@radidoc4832 wooooord. Forgot about that. Makes sense. I’m rather long-legged for my height and I still get buzzed.
Local shredder ... right on! ... those trails look familiar :)
I've had the expert evo for a bit over a year now.

Is the stumpjumper evo playful for tricks and a bit of street?
Adam, I just peeped your channel to see what you mean by “street.” You’ve got some trials skills my dude. Pretty dope. Keep shredding!
I don’t have a really informed answer for you here because I’ve never ridden trials and the last time I was riding street I was probably 15 years old on a 20” bmx. BUT…
When I think “street jibs” I definitely don’t think 29er carbon Mtb.
