    to me the scariest part of this scene is not the emergency or having to fly upside down. It's the captain telling the purser to tell the blackbox she loves her son. The captain has the understanding that 99.9% they arent getting out of this, and that line may be her last ever coherent sentence the world will hear.
    Telling someone to say their last words/knowing they are your last words, has got to be one of the most helpless feelings imaginable.

    This entire sequence is just incredible. The acting and the cinematography really bring about the feeling of terror, helplessness and how stressful it can be, as well as how quickly things can go wrong. At the same time, Whip is calm, tactful and confident that he can minimize the casualties and the damage as much as possible, doing whatever is theoretically possible to succeed in that endeavor. I kno the copilot was understandably losing it but Whip kept him from locking up from fear and gave Margaret the confidence to follow his instructions. It really conveys just how terrorizing and stressful that situation can be and how quickly one must decide and act in order to try and regain control of the situation or to at least try and reach the best outcome. Just a really great 8 minute segment that sets the tone of the whole film. Denzel appears to be an actual seasoned pilot and he's one of our greatest actors, of any generation.

    This crash sequence was inspired by the real life crash of Alaska Airlines flight 261 just off the coast of California in 2000. The real crash also had a mechanical failure that led to an uncontrollable pitch down attitude and the real pilots were able to arrest their dive by inverting their plane just like here. Unfortunately, they could not maintain enough thrust for lift and crashed into the ocean with all lives lost. The pilots on that flight are the only people to receive the pilots' association Gold Medal for Heroism without successfully landing their plane.

    For those interested - Alaska Flight 261 was the inspiration for this maneuver in the film... and actually did fly inverted to correct for an uncontrolled nose down when a jackscrew controlling the horizontal stab trim failed. Everything except rolling this plane back to level and gliding into a field seems feasible, but realistically the plane would have to land inverted. No one actually survived on Alaskan 261.

      it boils down to problem solving and checklists. he was able to trouble shoot what was wrong with the plane by going over all of the systems required for flight control. he realized something was forcing them into a dive, whatever it was that was forcing them down when the plane was upright should inversely help them to stay aloft when upside down. now obviously there is a lot more skill and knowledge involved, and it's not so simple, but this is what is required of people in urgent situations like this. good thing he woke up, the co-pilot absolutely was not going to pull this off

    Movie Watchers: Thank god this only happened in a film.
    Reality: Two Commercial Aircraft lost all elevation/pitch control. One dived straight into the ocean. The second managed to use flaps & engine throttling to slow down the decent for miles, in a last ditch effort, The captain tried to roll & invert the plane whilst hurtling towards earth only 500ft above ground... The wreckage was later found. It is believe the Captain only managed to get half way through the manoeuvre before hitting earth.
    Zero souls survived both scenario's.

      @babalonkie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@isavv_ It should of been mentioned on the same episode. Both scenarios have been featured on that show.
      Point is, the film used actual events... the only difference is he pulled it off in this film. A pilot went over this scene saying it's all fake... but his experience is only with 1/2 types commercial airlicraft. He stated the engine would instantly die due to fuel starvation or oil loss on inversion, whilst true on some aircraft others have inline fuel & oil pumps, meaning being upside down wont effect them short term (Like in the film). Also, not all engines immediately fully shutdown on extinguish mode for all aircraft. Some models pump C02 before cutting fuel, others self reignite immediately after extinguish, some fully shutdown etc etc. He does admit he is only experienced in certain aircraft.
      It was even calculated that the pilot in the second scenario would of likely pulled off the inversion maneuverer if he started 500 feet higher than he did (But that is in hindsight of course).
      So... it's not actually "impossible" as well as being a maneuverer of worthy thought & the scenario causing the problem has actually happened multiple times.

      @@babalonkie From my understanding.. If you lost the horizontal stabilizer on a T-tail plane like the first scenario which was a broken screw dew to not servicing, what's the point of inverting the plane? the stabilizer is loose and not stuck..so whatever you do, you will just fall straight to the ground..

      What i remember... Jammed and broken pins have been a factor in several scenarios. Both aircraft mentioned still had control in the wings. The first scenario may of involved loss of both vertical and horizontal in the tail, i cant remember to be honest. But the second scenario definitely involved the pilots doing these very manoeuvres as shown in the film.

    Narrator: SouthJetAir 227 cruises 25,000ft above central Georgia. 0:24 First Officer Evans takes control of the plane and prepares to descend for landing. 0:33 Suddenly, there's a problem. 0:44 Captain Whitaker takes control of the situation and alerts the cabin crew. 0:50 The pilots struggle to control the jet....but it's no use. The plane pitches down sharply and begins to dive. 1:00 Flight 227 is in a dangerous nosedive, risking the lives of everyone on board. 1:23 The plane plummets down at 500 per second, and the controls have no effect. 1:45 Desperate to stop the jet's erratic descent, the pilots deploy the speedbrakes and landing gear to slow it down. 2:02 The pilots give everything they've got, after a while, the plane begins to respond. Captain Whitaker suggests their stabilizer could be broken, if he's right then flying the plane might be impossible. 2:26 The flaps are extended. As it happens, the plane finally pulls out and levels off. 2:36 The pilots prepare to fly manually for an emergency landing, but there's still no control. Flight 227 falls into second terrifying plunge. 3:25 The jet is now falling twice as fast than before. Time is running out. Flight Attendant Margaret Thomason assists the pilots despite the situation.
    4:06 SouthJetAir Flight 227 is out of control and falling from the sky, and headed straight for suburban Atlanta. 4:22 Desperate to save his passengers and everyone below, Captain Whitaker is forced to take drastic action. 4:43 Whitaker rolls the MD-88 in a final attempt to save the plane. 5:03 Flight 227 begins going upside down. 5:10 In the cabin, the passengers can do nothing but hold on for dear life, as they spiral towards the earth. 5:31 Amazingly, the plane holds together and it almost works. Despite leveling out, it is still losing altitude. 5:45 The MD-88 is exceeding it's maximum flying limits. The engines cannot withstand such extreme flying. 6:20 Flight 227 can no longer make an airport or hold in the air. The plane with 153 passengers on board is flatlining. 6:34 As they level out, Captain Whitaker realises it's now or never. He must put the plane down somehow. The chaotic motion of the jet turns the cabin into a danger zone and a torture chamber. 7:18 Then the unthinkable happens. The engines of the MD-88, stressed beyond endurance, fail. It's the point of no return. 7:32 Whitaker guides his stricken plane towards an empty field for an inevitable crash landing.
    Off-camera: SouthJetAir Flight 227 crash lands in an empty field just outside of Atlanta in Georgia, after a tense 10 minute battle for control. Despite the violent impact and the plane being shattered, most have remarkably survived. The cockpit crew is alive and wounded, but 6 people are dead including one on the ground....

      It was even MORE unfair, as it would have been preventable by just having good maintenance. The stabilizer broke, like the captain thought it did in this movie, making the plane dive even more than in the movie. It went into a COMPLETE vertical dive. The pilots might have been able to save it, but since before it broke that bad it was still broken, they had already lost a lot of altitude. ;

    This is something that actually happened in real life on a flight from Cabo to SFO. It was an Alaska Airlines flight. However, those that were on the plane did not survive even though that plane was also inverted. Thoughts and prayers to the family members of the passengers and crew who died in the accident.
    One thing I gotta make a couple comments on this scene are, while yes, when the plane is inverted, the engines will eventually catch fire but, once they are extinguished, it’s no longer in operation. Any fuel flow in the engines will be stopped.
