I'm guessing the film's technical advisor was a Southwest Airlines pilot, in which case taking off into a thunderstorm instead of waiting it out on the ground makes perfect sense.
Actually flying into a thunderstorm is against FAA rules. They are supposed to fly around them, if possible. The downdrafts are the reason and can push an aircraft into the ground if the storm is strong enough.
One of Denzel's greatest acting gifts : he truly makes you believe in his character, whatever it may be. There is an ease to him that only the very best, ever have, & as i 1st watched this film, I totally believed he was an airline pilot. Bryan Gerhaty is his co-pilot. I remember him from " Chicago PD "

That's a deep scene. Into the storm is the perfect name for it. Eagles are the only species of bird that will fly 'into a storm'. They will do all their best hunting and reach its top speed otherwise impossible for them if it wasn't for the storm. Bc they realize that once they are inside the storm they see better than anyone possible looking into the storm.
Crazy that this scene is based off actual black box data of a flight that inverted like this but went into the ocean and killed everyone. So besides the part where they rotate and land in a field, this is extremely accurate to what it was like to die in a plane crash.
It's pretty interesting that that inverted manuever was tried in real life in the Alaskan Airlines tragedy. If only it had worked for those brave pilots on that fateful flight. Respect to all the safe and talented pilots out there who can perform such a huge responsibility.
@vcdep991 They really did. Even with a broken plane that should've nosedived into the ocean, they kept it aloft longer than most could to try to save their passengers, but most likely all control systems were lost. RIP, 261.
As a long time airline captain, I can tell you that everything about this scene is made up Hollywood bull stein. Trust me, the LAST thing you do in moderate turbulence is speed up. That intensifies the effect of the turbulence on the airplane and you risk potential structural damage. Furthermore, no Pilot in his right mind would thread the needle like that between two thunderstorms when you could easily take a 45 degree turn to the right and go around the entire system. Better yet, just stay on the ground and wait 20 minutes for the system to clear out of the way. But that would make for a boring story. At least the acting was good….
I'm not a pilot but the thing I find unrealistic is the sound of an engine spooling up during the entire storm and suddenly when they get out of the clouds and into sunny weather that engine sound fades

lol this isn't real life, the plane didnt crash cause of him damaging the plane. If it did they would have added that to the movie plot. The plane crashed because of whatever reason the writers and director chose the reason to be. In this movie they chose it to be a faulty plane. If this was real life, you would be right, but its not so logic doesnt apply.
The entire flight crash was loosely based on the crash of an Air Alaska MD-80, which briefly flew inverted and level before crashing into the pacific ocean off the coast of California.

I was flying a V-tail Bonanza over the Donner Pass one New Years eve, on a long distance flight from Florida, when I encountered the most severe turbulence I've ever flown in, w/ 50-100 ft. changes in elevation occurring in the blink of an eye. Thankfully, I always wear my safety belt or I would have been slammed into the roof and maybe knocked out. As it was, I came into Rialto airfield w/ 50-60 knot cross winds and just managed to put it down and requested assistance w/ the tie down, as I was flying alone. It took everything I and the flight deck guy had to secure it, but after 10 minutes it was secured, but it wasn't necessarily on the ground, but kinda floating on its tie downs. When I did a post-flight inspection the next day, I found the port wing tip was missing its red lens and the housing was bent in a bit. It only dawned on me why that lens was missing once I was in the air again - that lens had made contact w/ the ground when I made my landing!?! My heart beat a little faster for a few minutes, but I remember smiling to myself, knowing/feeling I had somehow cheated death.

Normal Ryan Air landing..
why does everyone, (including me), hate Ryanair so much? can't just be the way they slam the plane down at luton airport!!!
It is much safer to land hard than soft... If you want an explanation please ask me
Sam, there is a hard landing.
then there is ryanair!! i spoke to another passenger after the last time i flew with them. he said he always thought he had crash landed!!
But just have some common sense for a moment please... I am telling you as a training captain with over 13000 hours on the 737, that a hard landing is much safer than a soft one, as there is less chance of floating and using up more runway. In the case of Luton, the landing distance is only about 1300m, which is very little, so a hard landing needs to be performed to ensure a safe stopping distance. Do not get carried away with people saying that a soft landing is perfect, because if you are on a flight that has a oft landing, that was a bad landing. I quote from the flight crew operations manual produced by Boeing, "All pilots must ensure that a safe stopping distance is achieved upon landing. This is primarily done as a result of a firm/hard landing being achieved. Boeing© developers recommend that a landing should not be softer than approx. 1.2G and no greater than approx. 1.8G (B738 MLG approx. 3.8G). The B738-CFM56-7B27 should achieve a stopping distance with no less than a subtraction of 15% of the calculated stopping distance on the Boeing© OPT, and the landing distance must not exceed an addition of 8% to the calculated stopping distance." This shows that the 737 is meanr to be landed hard. IF you try to land soft, then a lot more than 8 percent will be added to the landing distance

lol this isn't real life, the plane didnt crash cause of him damaging the plane. If it did they would have added that to the movie plot. The plane crashed because of whatever reason the writers and director chose the reason to be. In this movie they chose it to be a faulty plane. If this was real life, you would be right, but its not so logic doesnt apply.
@@robotman8444 The writers left it ambiguous on purpose whether Whitaker damaged the the jack screw, as Denzel himself confirmed in an interview.
I love how the movie forgets this scene when the over-speed of the engine probably cause the damage that led to the crash.
The entire flight crash was loosely based on the crash of an Air Alaska MD-80, which briefly flew inverted and level before crashing into the pacific ocean off the coast of California.
As an aviation enthusiast, there were so many red flags during this scene that normally wouldn't happen. But great drama though!
Worst of all, and I've never even actually flown but even I know about this rule, is that they most definitely are NOT following the Sterile Cockpit rules.
I feel ya, buddy. But it's good comedy.
what exactly do you mean?
@@paulvernier1843
He's talking about the rule that pilots should not talk about anything other than the flight checklist during takeoff.
Everything else aside, if this was real, the plane wouldn't have gotten off the ground and the captain would've been reported if not arrested.
Best part of this scene, EVERY- SINGLE -THING, + the Sun, then, "your plane..my plane". hilarious ! tyvm !!! L M H right OFF !!
That is a hell of a steep climb.
I have never flown in a md80 but it's known for its steep climbs
デンゼルワシントン一番好きな名優です。
黒人という事で、なかなかアカデミー賞の授賞には時間がかかりました。
若い時、凄いハンサム。!!!!!!!
Fascinating scene; well acted by all
Top 3 greatest actor to ever grace the screen
i love it when he is singing under his breath when if i was in that situation i would be dead focused and shitting myself a little 2.45
Man, Hollywood be making some strong, classified engines for this amount of rpms for only 60% thrust.
Funny how sober he gets when it’s time for some serious flying.
it's a talker....maybe 2 action scenes at most
if you're into wordy movies, this one's for you bud
what a great actor
greetings from Egypt
Oh god I love the aircraft sound as it’s speeding through the clouds, gives me the chills 😂
All the passengers: AAaaArgGhh
Only the Pilot: YiiiiHaaAaAaaa
He's a great pilot, but he ruined himself...
I watched 5 movies with Denzel Washington in one week, now i feel like it's always the same character that changes job continuously ahahah
Having a co-pilot like that every flight must be a real drag...
Its Hollywood co-pilot.
salute to the captain ,because he did panic on that time , handling ..so cool
Alaska Airline 261 ( Captain Ted Thompson, First Officer William (Bill) Tansky Tried there best to save the plane. They were professionals they keep trying desipite of fearing the death and trying to save the plane. The voice of Captain Ted has patience while they were in danger. GOD bless them in next world. a family loose a father parent friend )
Denzel Washington is one of the best actors ever
I was flying my f 22 raptor over Russia the other day when I got Rader locked by 2 migs I had to pull 14gs to get back to Nato friendly country and I was being chased by a China f67 which is a top secret aircraft they have I am lucky I had my glock 45 on my hip cause I used it to shoot down 2 of the 3 Jets after me the other I got rid of by throwing my parachute will Smith style
Surprised a canned stuka divebomb sound effect wasn't thrown in there 🤣
Denzel is a genius. I hope he works with Zemeckis again.
Did It Respect Airplane Flying
A Big Round of applause for Captain Denzel Washington Lady's & Gentleman💙
Denzel Washington is such a great actor!!
Had everything gone well he would have probably been grounded and drug tested for exceeding 250 knots below 10000 ft lol
"There will be no meal service today."" There will be no barf service today"
I don't know about anybody else but my BP was rocking watching that
Good piloting
The engine sounds so unrealistic
sounds like a damn drill
mkjjohn I mean... Don’t the MD-80 & 707 use the same engines ?
I wouldn't know. I'm not a car guy.
Was this a documentary of a real flight?
Yeah I agree, it must have been meant to subconsciously build suspense in the minds of the audience than be a real representation of her engines
Lol he has Jeppesen chart dam that is old school right there 👍
Jepp is widely used, what os about old school?
@@vurban we use EFBs now. Still shows Jeppesen but I think he was referring to PAPER Jeppesen.
Bro is rlly flying a Concorde
_I recently went through that from Seattle's SeaTac to Vegas' McCarran. Nerve-wracking experience_
Whoa
coming into McCarran is always fun when dropping through the thermals.
