    Amazing song. My mother (Maria) passed on labor day last year from Alzheimer's. Due to covid, I saw her at the end of August for the first time. The first verse hits so hard.

    5:10 - 5:34 is the best part of the song to me. That level of uncomfortable honesty is what elevates it from what was already an incredibly fantastic song to what I consider genuine art. Rather than compromise his song and his authenticity as a writer, Duritz chose to release this 20 years later than what may have been intended instead of filtering the song to a point where it was more palatable to the listener. I hope he has managed to fix this issue by now, and as an active listener and participant of his work, I am humbled to know that music still exists with this level of reality.

    • @sotampacane
      @sotampacane 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that line in question is cringe inducing, and I wish it wasn't in the song. Honesty is one thing, but think about this from that little girls perspective.

    • @jacovichstabs841
      @jacovichstabs841 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sotampacane I agree that the line is weird. I think it's more weird because it's "little" girls rather than just girls.
      It could be interpreted as pedophilic but it could also just be used to build a kind of childish, immature atmosphere.
      If he is just talking about looking at women his age, it seems that his self-judgment of his "nasty little habit" is that he is immature and childish for doing this.
      Therefore it makes sense that he would project this onto others, thus calling them "the little girls" rather than just "girls".
      I don't know, it's definitely still a weird line but I choose to interpret it more as projection and self-judgment than anything more sinister.

      @talldan645 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this song would not have made any sense on the first album. it has an emotional maturity and a sense of resolution/acceptance that does not fit with the raw energy and emotional turmoil of those first songs.

    • @SchardtCinematic
      @SchardtCinematic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@talldan645 Mmmm funny how it was written for the first album.... it's just that Adam couldn't figure out the pacing and how to put this poem to music like the others. Even this new version done with the orchestra sounds awkward in its pacing. Also considering alot of the lyrics adorn the album cover. DOD you see the interview where Adam said if they had finally figured it out they were going to put it on Recoving the Satellites. Then make it a gimmick that the song Recovering the Satellites would then go on the next album. But then Adam did say he was glad that didn't happen because unlike August and Everything After. Recovering the Satellites was a really good song.

      @@paulbackhard6315 I've seen many interviews and the ones I've seen. He has always said he just couldn't get the song right. Why it was left off the first album. Then Adam went on to say if he got it worked out he was going to put it on Recovering the Satalites. And he spike that it would have been funny then to put the song Recovering the satalites on the 3rd album. But then he said he was glad he didnt do that because Recovering the Satatlites was a great song.

      Ghost Train is my favourite song on that album! I would like to hear this song on AAEA though… maybe on a second disc, or maybe something like the Eels With Strings album would be great… play all the songs on the AAEA album plus all the B-sides plus this title track, a few other favorites from the Crows repertoire, then a few covers in the encore… could be a storming double live album!

    • @charlotte-hanson
      @charlotte-hanson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could just be an awkward way of saying they're seen as less than him. The verse is about having made it, having a ton of money, but still being bad inside. He's made it big and they are all little. He has a partner so he's never alone, but still wants what he doesn't have.
      OR it could be a metaphor for the power imbalance inherent to the groupie/famous musician dynamic on top of the aforementioned "not satisfied, always wants what he shouldn't". Either makes sense here to me tbh
