Took the feeling from my soul. That album takes me back to being 13 years old. My grandmother who raised me driving me home from Service Merchandise after she bought me my first cassette tape. By the time Omaha kicked off my life would never me the same. If I close my eyes and focus I'm back in that car with her just for a second. This makes me remember and I miss her so much.
I am not surprised by the brilliance. After my daughter was in a near fatal car wreck back in 2009, she lie in a coma for 6 days. The prognosis was not good. Music is powerful. I remember playing guitar for my grandma on her death bed. She was at the point where she couldn't see or talk. She could only hear. After I played a few songs she said, "Michael. Love you. Michael." A moment I will never forget. So awesome beyond words.
***If anyone remembers the story behind Adam relearning this song, I'm the person who had the "only" recording and went to a show in San Francisco and gave a copy to Graham Colton (he opened for them and I stuck around in the lobby when the show ended to see if I could run into anyone who could pass it along). Graham gave it to Adam and said, "We were just talking about this song!" I said, "I know! I've been the one online in the chatroom or whatever it was talking about it. I sat down and HAND WROTE all of these darn lyrics to post online to 'prove' I had a copy****** :) Adam played it the next night. OK. You rock. Thanks you what you've done. This was one of THOSE albums for me and I held on to it tight, never let it go. Through the good times and bad I always had August and Everything After.
Ashlee, were these the shows at the Warfield? I went to 2 of those that week! Loved Graham Colton and met him in the lobby too. So, I now wonder if I heard this! One show was rockin' and one was more acoustic.. Now you have me thinking.

29 year old songwriter. Same here. If I'm ever able to write anything that makes someone else feel the way most any of Adam's lyrics make me feel, that'd mean more to me than just about anything. This song is a masterpiece.
Counting Crows is awesome. Adam is the man. This guy Brett McDaniel is a great songwriter as well. th-cam.com/video/nWpwnKcJzrY/w-d-xo.html I am a sucker for sad songs
My Mother loved Adam Duritz's album--I got her the cassette for her thirty-fifth birthday. Playing the album AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER is cathartic as each year passes--as I get older, I listen to the album myself. When I was a disc jockey at the college radio station, I played a Counting Crows song for every show I had--as I owned his other music, I fell in love with AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER album--every now and again, playing "A Murder of One" was the right song to play before going on a cigarette break and walking home on Wednesday nights from the college campus. Before my Mother passed from colon cancer at sixty-two unexpectedly, I played her this song via TH-cam and she thanked me for sharing this song. Adam Duritz and Counting Crows, you are wholesome and tumescent with your lyrics. If I ever find BUTTER MIRACLE on CD, I will add it to my collection. Thank you for helping me understand music, Adam. I have all your albums but BUTTER MIRACLE will be in my LP and eventually, the CD collection. Thank you for giving me thirty two years of great lyrics.
The sheer emotion and power of this song is truly amazing - we're getting older and older and older but always a little further out of the way. Im now 38 now and I first listened to Counting Crows 24 years ago. They have been with me throughout my entire life and every album and song I can recount periods of my life. After 24 years I still get the same feeling that I first felt when I heard Round here. Thank you Adam Duritz for creating the soundtrack of my life as Im sure many others have experienced the same.
I don’t let myself listen to this more than a few times per year. It’s a treat I give myself each fall. August and Everything after could be my epitaph
i got a shudder the first time i heard this song. It was a sublime feeling, like I had known the song for years, but I was just hearing it for the first time. Even though i have only heard it a couple of times it is one of my favorite songs, by one of my favorite bands

I honestly think the sound would fit Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings best out of their existing albums. Don't ever say final album. I don't wanna think about that 😭
This is my favorite song by my favorite band. It's just.. Perfect, and priceless, and contains a little bit that has just resonated differently, sort of iridescently, in the almost 2 decades since the first time I heard it. I still remember the first time, on headphones in my school's computer lab, hiding under the desk crying by the third subsequent repeat, which, yeah, I have some mental health problems, but it really was that intense and magical. "Well, I hope you weren't expecting me to be crucified. The best that they can do is just hang me from the nearest tree." I mean, the whole thing, but especially that part.
it's ok eve. first time i heard this lost song now. tears can do no harm from falling down. we all have our issues. some of us fight demons or angels or ourselves. we're sensitive to the world and it shows every time we have rejected or denied acceptance.
Adam said before that Maria was mostly, in a sense, his "self"/his internal interpretation of himself. Which makes sense since he has depersonalization disorder. As someone with BPD (which can have similar characteristics to DD), it is equally as heartbreaking to listen to it that way, for me. Losing who you are can be as hard as losing someone outside of yourself.
i have listened to the orchestral version and now the live rendition. both are resonant and deep as any street in Baltimore. adam knows how to pull our heartstrings. lyrics like this demonstrates how he was an undervalued songwriter of the 90's & beyond. i believe in Maria & Elizabeth,.
was listening to this last night on new year's eve passed out on the back of my car. Had it on my ipod for 8 years, but this song really got to me that night. Cheers Adam.
This was a recommendation by TH-cam 3 days ago, August and Everything After was the first CD I ever bought, I never paid attention to the artwork on the cover.. until now. What an amazing story this song has, this live version is a masterpiece I'm glad it found me.
maurice you are a legend. i listen to this song the morning after i had some beers the night before. strangely makes me feel awesome. it pleases my earholes. thanks for posting
yeah when this finally got played and recorded, we fans that followed them hardcore practically crapped ourselves.. we thought we'd never get to hear it
Favorite lines? 'I no longer know how to pray, I live in a dog town and it's a dalmation parade... I've changed my spots over and over, but they never seem to fade away'.
I listen to this and it’s what my old best friend used to play around me. The only friend I ever had for 7 years before he moved away after meeting a great woman with a kid that now has a great step dad… miss you Fonda … almost feels like you’re here …

The blue album cover is so breathtaking compared to the yellow. The blue really fits this song, the beautiful song it is. But the yellow fits the entire album and it just gives me the greatest nostalgia. Also my favorite lyric: "Well I already got my disease, So take your fuckin filthy hands off of me, Yeah well I hope you weren’t expecting to be crucified, the best that they can do is to hang you from the nearest tree". The whole verse resonates with me
!... I've never heard this. I don't claim to know all their songs, but damn (aside from Round Here live performances, this is probably on top of my favorite Counting Crow list!!!)
What a song .I have just listened to the new version that was recorded in air studio's London and Adam says it's being realised on Amazon music tonight at 12 UK time and there will be a video to go with it .the new one is very different with strings and no piano.
I remember hearing the demo version of this song before the album came out and was so bummed that it wasn’t on the record. It was my favorite song and was just nowhere to be found for so many years. I’m loving this version. Adam is one of my fav lyricists of all time.
He also said on the DVD that he couldn't play the song all the way through in one take without making a mistake so he got fed up of trying to record it. Also, this is a much better recording than the other version they did when the crowd were really rowdy and cheering at random moments which completely ruined it. I'm so glad Adam played it a second time and the crowd were much more subdued and cooperative and we get to hear the song like it should have been had it been on the album!
When find myself alone i know im never going home i make the changes the changes that i need. But i no longer know how to pray and i live in a dog town and its a donation Parade. I change my spots over and over but they never seem to fade.
I first head this rare song on Amazon Music. It sounds like corporate piracy. This tune is a lyrical powerhouse. I think Adam should compile this in a CC album of alternate ballads, anthems, and love songs. Thanks Adam. My cousin Brian Sullivan with his wife Jenn has met you a few times in random bars.
I'm thinking this was recorded in a show in 2003 (most likely). I have another version from that same tour... but this one is much cleaner. Thanks for posting.
Wow what brilliant song; I love the pure form of this live recording. Probably one of the best songs I have heard from an artist in many years. These songs just don’t come along very often we are privilege. Thanks Adam for your brilliance and I respect the fact that you believe this song is special, it is.
Does anyone know where I can download this version of the song? I’m not a huge fan of the recorded version… this live version just hits different. Still my favorite Counting Crows piece ever!
@Komic Klepto I remember that "devil and the Bunny show" recording, it's one of the few times you hear a band wanting to bottle a crowd off. What was that line "We're gonna come back with a drummer to beat up on you all" or something?
Actually I read him saying that he couldn't get it right when he was recording it in the studio and took a break and recorded Raining in Baltimore for someone else and nailed it one take - the producers heard it and said that's awesome and its going on the album - so they dropped this one in favor of it. Its a shame that it never made it onto a studio album!
Is there one guy that says "Oh My God" right at the start as he's the only one that realizes what it is until the line later on when they all cheer? Or is it me just wishing I was that guy and got to experience this.
I don't hear the "Oh My God!" in this version. I think there are other versions of this recording with more crowd noise audible. Maybe that's where you hear it. Honestly, though, it's kind of surprising to me that the crowd only notices the song he's playing when he gets to the "August and everything after" line. The song is pretty famous with fans. There were (accurate) lyrics floating around on the Internet way before he performed it this time. As he says, he performed it three other times, and the Internet got a hold of those, too. :)
Anybody know the chords for this/able to pick some progressions out? Seems simple enough (not a criticism by any means) but my ear’s still just not good enough to discern most of them
It's August 2020. I really wish it was August 1993 again.
me, too.
Same.
I was in the Navy in Norfolk.Take me back down to Hampton Roads...
@@christurner8255 speak, sing in the immortality... I dig the blues.
I am not surprised by the brilliance. After my daughter was in a near fatal car wreck back in 2009, she lie in a coma for 6 days. The prognosis was not good. I brought a portable cd player into the room full of machines and wires and monitors, and with tears in my eyes I placed her copy of August And Everything After in the player and pressed play. Less than a minute later her mouth began to move and she was mouthing the words. It was a moment I will never forget. On my way to Guilford, NH today. CC and LIVE.
My love and my daughter's love for this man (AD) is unlimited.
Thank you Adam. You're the real deal. The Rain King.
That's awesome brother. Glad to hear it, hope all is well.
Music is powerful. I remember playing guitar for my grandma on her death bed. She was at the point where she couldn't see or talk. She could only hear. After I played a few songs she said, "Michael. Love you. Michael." A moment I will never forget. So awesome beyond words.
The Power of Music

a raw, haunting masterpiece..you are correct!!!

My gosh. So many years later. Finding this again on August 1st 2024. My heart.

beautiful sentiment mate
100%
So true. Every song brings back a time and a place and a moment.
yes!
I don’t let myself listen to this more than a few times per year. It’s a treat I give myself each fall. August and Everything after could be my epitaph
i get chills whenever i hear this song.
Written on the album cover the whole time. 💚
Thanks for that. A fan, yet never noticed this!
Yes!!!
i got a shudder the first time i heard this song. It was a sublime feeling, like I had known the song for years, but I was just hearing it for the first time.
Even though i have only heard it a couple of times it is one of my favorite songs, by one of my favorite bands
I agree, that’s the best way I could explain it! With the album being my favorite of all time even though it’s older than I am, this is exactly how it made me feel.
My goodness, wat a absolutely beautiful song.
I played this to my 19 year old son who has grown up listening to the CC"s. His comment after hearing was why have I never heard this one before.
in my opinion, i think that Counting Crows should include this on their very last album as the very last song...a perfect ending
Would be epic.
Why? Billy Joel's last song on his last song is "These are my final words."
While I agree... I can’t lose them... no final albums, no, no, never.
I honestly think the sound would fit Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings best out of their existing albums.
Don't ever say final album. I don't wanna think about that 😭
Jerry Garcia's last song was "Black Muddy River" seems perfect to me...m play it at my burning

The way you comfortably shared you have mental problems but kept trucking with what you were saying… beautiful soul …
7 years later, OP... I hope you're still here...
I'm glad to be in 2022 and still listening to my favorite band
Don't ever fall in love with a girl named Maria then lose her. You won't be able to listen to Counting Crows the same again.
Every girl becomes Maria when you lose them, at least to me.
cannybloke Yep.
Oof
Or Elizabeth....
This is ligerally my new favorite song. I’ve listened to it about 100 times in the last few weeks
This is the greatest thing on TH-cam! Thanks for posting!
"You look into her eyes, and it's more than your heart will allow." - That's deep.
My newborn loves this. I hope it never makes her too sad.
wow I always thought this song was a myth.... only ever represented as lyrics on the album cover.... great work! wow. YAY!
i have listened to the orchestral version and now the live rendition. both are resonant and deep as any street in Baltimore. adam knows how to pull our heartstrings. lyrics like this demonstrates how he was an undervalued songwriter of the 90's & beyond. i believe in Maria & Elizabeth,.

What an amazing story this song has, this live version is a masterpiece I'm glad it found me.

I folow this guys since the begining... this is a masterpiece.. hever heard before. thanks for share it..
I found this on a rare cd years ago - I was over the moon. It is so raw and so great. We love you Adam.
thank you for this - it makes me cry for some reason. Epic.
maurice you are a legend. i listen to this song the morning after i had some beers the night before. strangely makes me feel awesome. it pleases my earholes. thanks for posting

Thank you so much for this!!! I can’t believe I’m just now finding this! ❤️
Favorite lines? 'I no longer know how to pray, I live in a dog town and it's a dalmation parade... I've changed my spots over and over, but they never seem to fade away'.
Yes
Personally I think, lyrically, Adams best song. Every line is just perfect!
Drunk in Villamartin, Spain.... still loving this wonderful music. 👌🎵🎶
Had never heard this, surprisingly. Thank you!
I listen to this and it’s what my old best friend used to play around me. The only friend I ever had for 7 years before he moved away after meeting a great woman with a kid that now has a great step dad… miss you Fonda … almost feels like you’re here …
AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER SONGTEXT
They're wakin' up Maria, 'cause everybody else has got some place to go,
She makes a little motion with her head, rolls over,
And says she's gonna sleep for a couple minutes more,
I said, I'm sorry to Maria for all the cold-hearted things that I have done,
I said, I'm sorry by now at least once to just about everyone,
She says I've forgotten what I'm supposed to do today,
And it slips my mind what I'm supposed to say,
We're getting older and older and older,
And always a little further out of the way,
You look into her eyes and it's more than your heart will allow,
And August and everything after,
You get a little less than you expected somehow.
Well I stumbled into Washington Square, just as the sun began to rise,
And walked across on the lawn to the cathedral,
And laid down and the shadow of St. Mary's in the sky,
I'm just one of these late model children, waiting for the king,
But there ain't no sign of Elvis in San Francisco, it's just me,
And I'm playin' this rock and roll thing,
She wants to be just like me and I want every damn thing I can see,
You know one day you're Daddy's little angel,
The next day you're everything he wanted you to be,
They dress you up in white satin,
And they give you your very own pair of wings,
In August and everything after, I'm after everything,
I said la la la...
And now I got my reservations,
And I got my seven-million dollar home,
And I got the number of some girl in New York City,
Who's always wide awake so I never spend the night alone,
I got a nasty little habit,
Of peekin' down the shirts of all the little girls as they pass me by,
And I wonder when it all catches up to me,
They finally bring it down, did you think I was gonna cry?
Well I already got my disease, so take your fuckin' filthy hands off of me,
I hope you weren't expecting to be crucified,
The best that they can do, is just to hang me from the nearest tree,
It's midnight in San Francisco and I'm waiting here for Jesus on my knees,
And August and everything after, I want somebody else to bleed for me,
I said la la la...
Oh no no no...
I came down from North Dakota 'cause I had confidence in the military mind,
And now everyone I know is just turning showgirl and dancing with their shirt off,
In some Las Vegas hotel line,
So I'm going' to Now York city 'cause it got a little sleazy here for me,
When I find myself a lawyer and no I'm never going home,
You make the changes, the changes that you need,
But I no longer know how to pray,
I live in dog town and it's a Dalmatian parade,
I change my spots over and over but they never seem to fade away,
I am the last remaining Indian, looking for the place where the buffalo roam,
You know August and everything after, man them buffalo ain't never comin' home,
You know August and everything after, man them buffalo ain't never comin' home,
La la la...
Conny F Pretty sure it's "find myself alone". Not a lawyer 😂.
About With Nemo Just going to say the same. I think you’re dead on.
Thank you for the lyrics. ❤
Just beautiful
How this never made it onto the album, I'll never know..
It's how Myths are built....
Insanely beautiful lyrics
I love cc and colorblind, i found this song today.
I'm in tears.
"Raining In Baltimore" moves me the same. Beautifully chilled.
Music makes lovely peeps like us so emotional. Peace love and chilled rock. xxx

ik wil niet dat je weggaat ik wil niet alleen this is real
Still brings me to tears in 2024. Resonates more, even.
This is one of my most played tracks on iTunes.. Thanks for posting it.
Their best song. Shame I didn’t get to see them play it.
chills the whole play through.....
Wow... that was incredible 👏 🙌 😍
still the best recording of this song ever
The blue album cover is so breathtaking compared to the yellow. The blue really fits this song, the beautiful song it is. But the yellow fits the entire album and it just gives me the greatest nostalgia.
Also my favorite lyric: "Well I already got my disease, So take your fuckin filthy hands off of me, Yeah well I hope you weren’t expecting to be crucified, the best that they can do is to hang you from the nearest tree".
The whole verse resonates with me
Any idea where or if this album is available?
I need to get one. xx
+Rob Hayes the cover? I think it's just a thumbnail the uploader edited. But I think u can buy the song on the Hanginaround single?
+Maddy S $35 for a used on on Amazon currently. Steep price for 3 tracks
It's on Amazon right now. The Album is the UK Hanging Around single with 3 tracks.
Simply amazing! thank you very much for this!!
What a beautiful find
+Looloo Belles For some reason this song makes me think of Forest Gump.
Jennie was a bitch...
Rudy Ceballos
!... I've never heard this. I don't claim to know all their songs, but damn (aside from Round Here live performances, this is probably on top of my favorite Counting Crow list!!!)
What a song .I have just listened to the new version that was recorded in air studio's London and Adam says it's being realised on Amazon music tonight at 12 UK time and there will be a video to go with it .the new one is very different with strings and no piano.
this song hits hard. especially “well i’ve already got my disease, so take your fucking filthy hands off of me.”
I had my first son in august 93 and nothing has made since sense thank you
I remember hearing the demo version of this song before the album came out and was so bummed that it wasn’t on the record. It was my favorite song and was just nowhere to be found for so many years. I’m loving this version. Adam is one of my fav lyricists of all time.
What fucking demo version?
I REALLY wish I could find piano sheet music for this song. Seems to be the only thing the internet doesn't have!
That’s bizarre finding a recording of a track this rare from the Counting Crow debut . Crazy luck , man .
Thanks so much for posting this.
Im 42. Been a fan since i was an early teen. First time ever hearing this😂
"There are pieces of Maria in every song that I sing"
When find myself alone i know im never going home i make the changes the changes that i need. But i no longer know how to pray and i live in a dog town and its a donation Parade. I change my spots over and over but they never seem to fade.
Never listened it before. It's amazing!
Perfectly imperfect!
I love saying this is my favorite song and no one has ever heard of it. It makes me feel like it's so rare it's got a little part of me in it.
Thanks for sharing man. This is beautiful.
I would cry my eyes out if i saw this live, in concert...
well i mean i know the words by heart... but i love it and it feels like it is a part of me.
This is the best version of this song. The Amazon official doesn’t have shit on the raw tone AD has here.
wow adam. i'm in tears
In August and Everything After, you get a little less than you expected, somehow...
This is so much better than the orchestra version
"shit" that may be my favorite lyric ever
I'm thinking this was recorded in a show in 2003 (most likely). I have another version from that same tour... but this one is much cleaner. Thanks for posting.
This album makes me think of Halloween and Christmas only albums because of June through August.
I can't believe 18 people hit dislike?!? Haters! This is genius!
Most of the dislikes are from Art Garfunkel and Scott Stapp.
Awesome Bless Song Luv It
this and Good Luck are the best thing live Adam Duritz ever sung at a piano
Wow what brilliant song; I love the pure form of this live recording. Probably one of the best songs I have heard from an artist in many years. These songs just don’t come along very often we are privilege. Thanks Adam for your brilliance and I respect the fact that you believe this song is special, it is.
“i’ve already got my disease, so take your fucking filthy hands off of me.”
What was that line "We're gonna come back with a drummer to beat up on you all" or something?
this song makes me nostalgic for a time i haven’t lived yet
August and everything after! So many losses in August
Can anyone point me to a downloadable version of this?
I'd never heard this song before, but had always wondered why there were lyrics on the album cover, if the song wasn't on the CD. Now I know
Essa musica Fez e faz parte da minha vida. Agora mais ainda, por que sou feliz. Estou feliz. Thanks for everythings.
Hanging Around [Single, Enhanced, Import] 2004/03/16 release date.
Brian Hartman It's just after Adam says the start of the first line.
Yes I can hear it..
Anybody know the chords for this/able to pick some progressions out? Seems simple enough (not a criticism by any means) but my ear’s still just not good enough to discern most of them
another thanks for posting this
Beautiful
