I always keep one as a sharing bottle for people who are interested in getting more into bourbon. They're usually coming from Jack & Coke etc and expect "serious" bourbon to be something they wouldn't see in a bar, so just putting this in a glen cairn and getting them to try it properly often gets them thinking.
Straightforward review as always Peter. 🥃 I kind of outgrew Maker's Mark halfway through my American whiskey journey. The only bottle I ask for every now and then is the classic Cask Strength with that nice honey wheat burn.
I really like everything I've tried from MM, I was a bit apprehensive to give them a shot because I figured they are just another big brand selling subpar stuff and living off their name but I quite like them. My dad who is also picky really like Maker's, specifically the 46, and I know its a good go-to gift bottle for him. We also brought a bottle to thanksgiving because its a bit more approachable for the non whiskey enthusiast
I agree. MM is a very approachable bottle and it gives you options once you want to challenge yourself with higher proof offerings. AND the price is also in the affordable range.
I do love almost all MM products and find them to be very delicious, smooth, and easy sipping whiskeys. I will definitely buy 46 again, but mainly just to have it on hand. Makers 46 Cask Strength on the other hand is one of my absolute favorite bottles on my bar. If you haven't already tried, you might enjoy 1792 Sweet What or the Bardstown Origin BiB, both have a very wheat-forward pallet.
This is a good one to have on hand as well as the 46CS. There is definitely a softness to wheated bourbons that I really do like and this one is no exception. Cheers!
I love Maker's 101 - Limited Release for a similar bottle with a higher proof. I recommend it if you haven't tried it and enjoy the flavor profile of Maker's products.
Thanks for another great review, Peter. I'm surprised that this is a skip for you. Makers Mark 46 is one of my favourites! Almost always have a bottle on hand. I get the 'want' for higher proof whisky's though. I'm just starting to lean that way as well. Cheers!
I just noticed that I have 2 bottles of the 46 CS and I reach for them every time over the standard 46 release so it has to be a skip. Nothing against it I just don't drink it because I have the others. Cheers!
I agree with you. I do not like regular Maker’s Mark but the 46 took me 1/4 of bottle before I think it is ok. Makers does not start to get good for me until it has some proof so the MM101 and the CS are only bottles I always have on hand. Keep a 46 for guests but the 46CS is where I go to instead of regular 46. The regular 46 is $3 less than the Regular CS by me.
Once you can handle the high proof bourbons there's no reason to get the regular 46 in my opinion. At least that's where I'm at in my journey right now. Cheers!
WT101 and the Maker's Mark 46 are my solid, non special sippers. But I've liked virtually all the WTs and Maker's.... aside from the most basic bottles.
@@whiskeyisajourney I like spicy, when it's not the only aspect. It's a mood thing. I've had the stave release here from MM, and I enjoyed that quite a bit, as well.
I have regular Makers, Maker's Mark 101, Maker's Mark 46, Maker's Mark Cask Strength & Maker's Mark Private Selection and think they are all SIP IT! Even the regular MM if that's all you willing to spend. 🥃Cheers!
Wasn’t overly impressed by 46, but not bad by any means. The French staves certainly give it a different note. But for the price I’d personally rather go for a Basil Hayden Toast
Additional: I am quite oppositional; I would rather have 3 bottles of MM46 than 1 bottle of MM46 cask strength. I gave a scathing review of MM46 cask strength tasting notes. To each palate its own. It is interesting to explore.
Fine by me 🙂 I'm not going to challenge anyone on their own palates. Like you said to each their own. If you like what you like and it's that simple. Cheers!
Fair enough... But you can always add a few drops of water to the CS and extend the bottle and you might get more intense flavors. Just saying 😜 Cheers!
Yikes! That's not good. Was it the 2023 release? I'm going to pour mine today and see if I can get the same thing out of it. Power of suggestion. 👍 Cheers.
I think that's funny in almost every blind this outperforms. Whiskey snobs don't like it because almost every liquor store has it and they can't brag to their friends about how they have it and you can't get it. A lot of backhanded complements as well.

I can see that. This was one of my first bottles I bought when I got into whisk(e)y.

Now that I have the taste for cask strength whiskey this just sits on my shelf.

I agree on this skip. MM46, while good, just isn't good enough to not buy a bottle of something else to try instead.
It's a basic bourbon. Not too exciting. Move on to the next one.
Nice review! I personally don’t care for this one or the regular Maker’s Mark. I do enjoy the BEP & BRT-01
I have a few bottles of MM so I will be doing a First Friday Flight Fight in the next few months. We will see how the BEP stacks up to the 46CS.
I agree with you.

I love Makers Mark 46 and your cork issue is why I am glad they went to screw tops 😂🥃I love MM 46
I'm not a big fan of the cork either, but I do like MM. Cheers!
@@whiskeyisajourney I have two private selections of Makers Mark both corks broke on me 😒🥃
I sure liked the look of the older bottle though, more classy IMO.
Trying this today. not a bad whiskey and around the same as the original for me. skip for me as plenty others to try. cheers
It's a crowded market in this price range. Cheers!
I like Maker's Mark 46 more than regular Maker's Mark. I see her routinely at $22 at Costco. At that price she is a buy-again for me.
The price is very good I just prefer the higher proof of the 46 CS. Cheers!
For a person who doesn’t want barrel proofs etc, sticks to lower proofs, would you prefer makers mark original or 46? Tia
I meant recommend, not prefer…
I think MM original is sweeter than the 46. The 46 is still sweet, but is slightly spicy compared to the original. Hope this helps.
@@whiskeyisajourney Thank You!
Thanks for the video. Can I ask you what app you use to put all of your whiskeys on the wheel?
It's called Spin The Wheel Random Picker. Cheers!
WT101 and the Maker's Mark 46 are my solid, non special sippers. But I've liked virtually all the WTs and Maker's.... aside from the most basic bottles.
WT is slightly too spicy for me, but I still like them. MM is more of my preferred profile.

Even though I tend to like the CS from them, I think all their expressions are worth a try. Cheers!
Love MM 46 and 101
Do you like one over the other? Cheers!
@@whiskeyisajourney oddly enough, no, I really like them both equally

French staves give off a higher spice note for me. Not the biggest fan unless there's enough sweetness to off set it

Oh, skip it definitely and ship it to me so I can dispose of it properly
😄 oh it will be disposed of property over here don't worry about that. Cheers!
I get a very distinct oak note.
I get some, but nothing overwhelming. Cheers!
When I want a wheater I go to my Old Elk double wheat!
That is a hard bottle to beat. Cheers!
Afraid if I try the MM 46 CS I'll never go back to the reg. 46. I can get 2 bottles for less than one Cask Strength.
Fair enough... But you can always add a few drops of water to the CS and extend the bottle and you might get more intense flavors. Just saying 😜 Cheers!
Skip it for me too
Easy skip. Especially when the 46CS is out there. Cheers!
I opened up my MM 46 CS the other night. I was disappointed. It tasted way too much of a moldy, funky, basement.
Yikes! That's not good. Was it the 2023 release? I'm going to pour mine today and see if I can get the same thing out of it. Power of suggestion. 👍 Cheers.
@@whiskeyisajourney Yes, it was this year's. I'll have to blind it now or else I will immediately think about it.
I tried the regular makers mark I had to throw it out. It didn’t agree with me.

I think it's a good bourbon, but now that I broke through my ABV wall I just prefer the 46CS over this. Cheers!
Hey, don’t just gloss over that cork failure - That’s a sign of shoddy craftsmanship! 🧐
My Cask Strength 46 is a screw top. I wonder if they are changing over to that for everything?
51% wheat is not a bourbon
Oh no...did I say that? I know better if I did. I sure did at 430 should have said wehated whiskey. Thanks for catching that.
