  • In this tutorial, I show how to add images to artwork by using the Image Trace functions in Adobe Illustrator CC, Revision 2015.
    Original image of President Barack Obama designed by artist Shepard Fairey.
    I show how to add an image from a file, explore some of the settings of the Image Trace function, and then show how to expand the image for use in artwork. Next, I show how to modify the new vector art by using the Recolor Artwork function, and review changing colors.
    This is another lesson in my course "Fundamentals of Industrial Design Software" taught at University of Idaho in Idaho Falls. In the course we cover the basics of Adobe Illustrator CC, Revision 2015, for designers, artists, and illustrators in the various areas of industrial design. The objective of the course is to help beginners and those with little experience with Adobe Illustrator CC become more familiar with the tools and their use in order to improve their current work, and/or move into positions that demand more Illustrator expertise.
    If you are interested in taking this course, please contact University of Idaho in Idaho Falls.

    For some reason when I try to even make any adjustments to my image trace, it is like the trace is locked. I checked my layer and it doesn't seem to be but I can't isolate anything and it only keeps my image in a rectangular boundary. the direct select tool or pen tool doesn't change my image

    • @RyanHaworth
      @RyanHaworth  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      After I use the trace, I press the Expand button. Then I usually make a copy of the artwork or file so I can easily get back to that point. The important thing with image trace is thst it creates a group of the artwork. So anything you wish to do to individual shapes within the traced artwork will need to be done within the group, either by isolation mode or direct selection. Let me know if any of that makes sense.

    Thanks for this tutorial, very helpful. Do you have a video on using the smoothing tool(?) Used where you created the shape of his shoulder from his ear down. You used some kind of smoothing tool that deleted some of the anchor points? Or did you use "delete anchor points"?

    • @RyanHaworth
      @RyanHaworth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure thing. Yes, after I moved some of the anchor points down, I went to the pencil tool. Double click the Pencil Tool in the toolbar (You may need to select it first from the Shaper Tool pull-out). In the Pencil Tool Options, be sure the box is checked next to "Option key toggles to Smooth Tool" (It may say "Alt key toggles to Smooth Tool" on a PC). Then you can use the Smooth tool by holding down option or alt. The Smooth Tool works by reducing the number of anchor points in a path, thus smoothing out the curve. I only did that here to reduce the number of anchor points. The Knife tool may have been a better option, but the Smooth Tool came to mind first. The Knife tool allows you to completely cut out areas rather than trying to reshape one point at a time. (see th-cam.com/video/7HY_PNna7OA/w-d-xo.html)

    I've image traced a complicated drawing I've scanned in and some of the lines touch and so become the same shape so recolouring a particular area is not possible without recolouring all the shapes that were merged. I don't think I'd be able to do the pen tool in this instance, just wondering if there is a way to separate the lines so I can split up the shapes? Thanks x

    • @RyanHaworth
      @RyanHaworth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that's one of the issues with image trace. It doesn't always cleanly separate shapes that we humans perceive. Other than the pen tool, you might try copying the whole shape to a new layer and then use the Knife (on the pullout with the Scissors tool) to separate the shapes. Use it like drawing with the brush. It's super easy if you have a stylus. I'll make a video on it soon.

    • @BenScooter1
      @BenScooter1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris-Anthony Pinnock This tutorial left more to be desired to be honest. It would've been nice if you explained this particular aesthetic in more detail, especially when it comes to 'simplifying' the vector down (which components should stay and which should go,) removing the photographic texture artifacts (in this case the tie,) and smoothing out the rough edges. You directly copy the colour palette from the source material without really making anything of it, whereas what you could have done is tried to explain the actual relationship between those colours and, essentially, why it works. It just means a lot of people watching this will end up learning in a 'parrot fashion' and merely attempt to click in the same places you click. Anyone can click the Image Trace button and select the eye dropper tool, it's going through all the design elements with a fine-tooth comb and exercising the techniques I've just mentioned that take skill, and are the ones worth teaching. It's a decent enough starting point, but when you place your progress side-by-side with the original it just looks a bit sloppy and half-finished.

  • @toufikhafs
    @toufikhafs 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    THE PICTURE DISPAPEAR AFTER CLICING THESE BUTTONS, what is the problem ?

    • @RyanHaworth
      @RyanHaworth  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what would cause it to disappear. Is it converting the image to a blank white object? If so, you might need to adjust the settings for Image Trace. After you click Image Trace, BEFORE you click Expand, find the Image Trace Panel instead. There you can change the settings and see what each change does before you make it a vector artwork. Hope this helps.

    Is there a way to delete the background on illustrator? Ex. Only Obama's face would be the picture and the background would be empty/negative(?) space. Thanks

    • @RyanHaworth
      @RyanHaworth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure You could do a clipping mask to remove the background. Just use the pen tool to draw an outline path around his head. Move the outline path in front of the image. Select both the path and the image and hit command+7 (Ctrl+7 on a PC). Boom! Clipped out the background.
