What I've Learned About My Irrigation System // Spring Irrigation Startup

  • I had an irrigation system installed for my lawn last June and with spring finally getting rolling here, I completed the spring irrigation startup for the season. I go over checking the irrigation system and adjusting a few things as well as my thoughts on the hunter hydrawise controller I'm using and what I would change if I had to do it all over again.
I have a full season lawn guide available here - ryanknorrlawncare.com/product...

I have the same system. I love that I can control everything on my phone. I take care of my grandparents house and I feel great full to have free water. We pump water from a pond. The pond is as big as an ice skating rink. 2 inch pipe comes out of it. Never have I ever drained the pond. 5 acres. 2 systems off one pump. One system has 8 zones and the other has another has 8. All the street run off and house drain from the basement fills the pond. That area is naturally wet. Feels great to have free water. Greenest lawn in all of Massachusetts.

I’m installing my Rainbird system right now 5004 pc, I’ve just got 2 rain curtains to install so not too much digging it was crazy yesterday out there in the rain digging a ditch, Had to use my pressure washer to blast a hole under the sidewalk, hopefully I can blast a 9” trench down the edge of the sidewalk to keep the damage to a minimum. Today I’m going to lay the pipe and run a 3/4” line from the laundry room to the garage. Yes guys, I’m a plumber so It will be done right. I just can’t wait to see the rain curtain in action. Ryan, that’s what you should have gotten, no clogging.

Tip, throw a spring clamp on the pop up, several at a time and shut down the zone. Remove filter screens and blow out with air. I'm on irrigation and they plug up with mud and debris.

I agree easy to use hose clamps then shut system off and clamp holds the head up so you can clean the nozzle filter. Just a tip 👍

The only time I run my irrigation manually, is to water in certain applications of product. I highly recommend the hunter Hydrawise.

I just went thru all my heads..actually lifted all them..they are 5 inch heads but are inch or more below ground level..since my yard is cut at 5 inches..alot of my water was just smacking the blades at the head..also..we in virginia have rain sensors on our boxes but we disable it..it never works right bc it senses the morning precipitation..

Hey Ryan just curious how your boulevard area is looking. I have a similar situation on both sides of my yard where the installer installed only one row of sprinklers (with head-to-head coverage) but not a second row of heads spraying back toward the first. I switched out my RainBird van nozzles to he vans. Seems decent but I still lack enough throw in some areas. Yesterday I put in mp rotators and I get way better throw than the vans. I’m still nervous I won’t solve the dry spot issues in my lawn because obviously I have to run the rotators longer but it’s just not the same as having a second row of sprinklers.
Just curious what input you have on this.

I have to almost mow every day I’m not at work. Definitely requires mowing twice a week to not be cutting more than 1/3rd... I work 12hr plus sometimes up to 18hr shifts 4 days a week. If my off days don’t line up with the weather, things can get out of control relatively quickly. I don’t have a bagger so mulching is only option. I’ll even mow the day after or two days after I mowed just to buy an extra day or two if it’s raining when I’m off or too wet. My neighbors probably think I’m nutts. (Wtf he just cut it?!) lol

Pretty much just for springtime though... should be able to back off when summer hits.

I'd love to see more like how many heads in each zone. What nozzles and how far they cover etc. Great info! Thanks!
