I had known of Roy Orbison from Pretty Woman, but it wasn't until hearing the Traveling Wilburys that I really appreciated his voice. As the lyrics switches from singer to singer, it really highlights how much better Orbison's voice was. Hearing Orbison alone (initially) is like watching Michael Phelps swim alone - you don't appreciate how fast he is. Putting Oribson next to Tom Petty and Bob Dylan is like putting Michael Phelps next to a varsity high school swimmer, and someone drowning.

It's a great story. Bono had been listening to "In Dreams" from the Blue Velvet soundtrack, and fell asleep to it. He woke up with this song in his head, thinking it was a Roy Orbison song. That night, backstage in London (Joshua Tree tour), he played it for the boys, who said it sounded good, like a Roy Orbison song. That was when someone came back and said Roy Orbison wanted to meet them. Roy told them how much he liked the show, and asked if they wanted to do a song together.

The "inimitable" Roy Orbison! Proof of the former and better times. We cannot even begin to describe the immense and pleasurable effects that this rendition has upon us now from those former times. A truly captivating haunting soulful voice that communicates vastly more than just one song. A measureless and a meaningful enjoyment. And not just another song to make some money. Thank God for true artists that love their audiences! 👏😄

And yet, the elites have still thrived, led everyone astray, and maintained the unequal status quo. Most people still feel they are slaves. And profits, housing, nice cars, doing well mean so much more to most than helping our fellow men. But then with our failed culture, what could we teach them?? Our non culture, or the culture of sell out for money, is an anti culture stance. It does not value relationships, friends, the everyday society, like it once did. It just uses and abuses them. We are a fallen Rome.

Where do you find a voice yesterday, or today as the one owned by Roy Orbison? His wide range, perfect pitch, pure sound, and masculine tone puts him on another level.
Unequal in the good looks, charisma and charm of Elvis Presley I think his voice equals or even surpasses that of the king.
And what a song, “ she’s a mystery to me.” It rings true for so many men.

I’m not sure I can think of a better example of when a song, singer, musicians and production all combine as well as this to create something this close to musical perfection. The song is as good as any Bono has written (and as good as any Roy sang), it’s utterly _perfect_ for Roy’s voice, and the musicians (you’ve got Benmont Tench and Jim Keltner, for crying out loud!) play _exactly_ what’s right for the song - no more, no less. I first heard this as a kid, it blew me away then and it blows me away now.

It’s tough for me to listen to this song, even to this day. I remember when it was released back in November 1988, I was 28 with my whole life in front of me. I was so happy for Roy to have a contemporary hit record (written by Bono no less) and he sang it with such passion! I loved it! Then he died the following month of a heart attack. I remember hearing it on the radio and was completely shocked. I sat in my car for about a half hour trying to absorb what I had heard. To me, it was like my youth was ending in a flash. My father died suddenly the same way about 4 months later and I can honestly say I’ve never been the same. Great song, but it brings back some painful memories.
