  • My review for Klein Tool Loose Cable Stapler - Klein # 450-100. I have had the tool for nearly a year and used primarily for running Cat5 / Cat 6 Cables but can also be used for stapling Romex in the electrical field.
    Let me know in the comments below if you would like a link to anything or if you have any questions. Let us know if you have a cable stapler that works well for you!

    The depth of the staple is irrelevant. The NEC doesn't tell us how to secure cabling, it tells us when to and how far apart to secure cable. When we drive a steel staple into wood to secure romex, we don't want to even snug the cable. We need to make sure that the cable is secure at an adequate distance from the surface of the finish to allow finishers to drive nails or screws into the finish without having to worry about penetrating the cable that we've installed. I might even say that I appreciate that the steel cable doesn't snug against the romex. I've had to cut up walls to get to cable that has been "snugged" a little too much - so much that the insulation was cut and a short occurred. I'd rather not have to do that.

      Good info 😂
      Yeah, that’s why it’s called a loose cable stapler. It is intended to leave the wire loose and not pinch.
      However, most of these staples don’t go in enough to even hold the wire in place. Especially when you shoot them into a vertical stud that isn’t pressing against a surface like the wood laying on my table. I sometimes have to shoot 4-5 staples to even get one to hold enough to keep the wire from pulling the staple loose while you move the wire in place for the next staple. So the depth of the staple for code is irrelevant, but the depth to hold in place and not pull out is relevant.
      I personally haven’t found a “hand” version of this tool that’s any better… but this one is a big waste of money to me. Someone else may like it.

    Interesting , I must confess I own one , but never used it ! All your points are well taken ! Gotta admit , I have a love/ hate relationship with Klein ! Their QA has been hit or miss since the early 2000’s ! Basically why I switched to Knipex ( no nasty surprises !

    • @MORGANSMaintenance

      I’m leaning towards it is the staples more than the gun…but if they are the only staples you can use then it is a product issue.
      I am still waiting for a Knipex product to let me down. Hasn’t happened yet.

    I have an older Gardner Bender branded stapler. I hope the staples are still available. I think it has similar issues with the staples not setting all the way. That said, I would still rather use it as staples and just give the staples a tap with a hammer to set the depth. Sometimes the staples being loose allows for some slack adjustment LOL.

    • @MORGANSMaintenance
      @MORGANSMaintenance  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s why I kept it..every now and then you can’t get in to places with a hammer also and it gives you an option to kinda get a staple in.
      I just wish I would have bought the cheaper one. Looking forward to the M12 version that comes out, I just hope it’s not ridiculously priced.

    Just used this with several hundred feet of romex/cat6 and it jammed over 90% of the time. And when it didn't jam the staple didn't go down far enough. It could be pulled out by hand. I had to hammer those down. going back.

    Here in Europe we hardly any use cable staplers, although sometimes I encounter jobs where I could use one. I did some research and only reasonable brand we may buy here would be Stanley. Probably Klein Tools would be available from Amazon with some enormous shipping rate.
    Unfortunately the conclusion from your video is that there are no good manual cable staplers.
    As I mentioned because of sparseness of applications I do not need battery operated/power/air stapler of this kind. It's peculiar considering that we use quite a lot of framing nailers, pin nailers and regular staplers; both pneumatic and cordless.
    Thank you for that review.

    • @MORGANSMaintenance

      And I agree with “there are no good manual cable staplers”…or at least not that I have found.
      I don’t use one extensively either but I also only use them for low voltage/data. I use MC cable for electrical with supports applied with screws which is my preferred fastener for about anything. There are times where a tool like this would be beneficial for speed…but only if it works.

    I bought this tool without too much research for stapling thermostat cable for a hvac installation as it was specifically rated for LV cable. I regret it, the staples were so loose they would have failed inspection had I not gone back through and hammer another set of LV staples. I also had 3 staples miss and ruin 2 lengths of thermostat cable. The tool itself definitely had more stapling power then I expected, but the staples for it are junk. Too much insulation, (too far down the staple) and too flimsy, that if you hit a knot in the wood it bends toward the cable and nicks it.

    • @MORGANSMaintenance
      @MORGANSMaintenance  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it has been one of the worst performing tools I have bought in awhile. The only thing it is useful for is putting staples in places where you need a free hand to place them… and then go back with a hammer.

    I beg to differ. As a homeowner my time is just as valuable as yours. We all get a limited lifespan and have limited budgets be what they may (unless you are one of the current robber barons). We don't need things that cannot achieve the lowest threshold of performing the task for which they are sold. Selling this kind of junk is robbery pure and simple for which there is a name; fraud.

    • @MORGANSMaintenance
      @MORGANSMaintenance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you about your time and apologize if it came across that your time isn’t valuable as a homeowner. I meant it as “it’s not costing a homeowner money” in the sense if you bid a job but now have to spend time not planned for which equals time and money. Or that I’m putting in 1,000’s of staples instead of 10-20 once a year that I have to touch up with a hammer.
      Everyone’s time is valuable and we buy a tool like this to save it…to which this one fails. It is a staple starter in hard to reach places at best.
      Thanks for watching.

    @spope7510 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1. That is the correct tightness for wire fastening, you DO NOT want the staple binding down on the wire. Binding violates code.
    2. Staples are incredibly easy to acquire, HIS HD doesn't stock them, but all the HDS around me do, so his location doesn't have the NEED to stock them, or they would.
    * Also, the full line of fasteners are available on Amazon with FREE overnight ship. No availability issue at all.
    3. Load the staples ON THE GUIDE LIKE INTENDED. What madman drops them into that slot? You place the entire stack on THE GUIDE, and slide closed, LIKE EVERRY SLED STAPLER on the market.
    I Love my stapler. I no longer risk hitting and damaging cables, esp extremely sensitive cat6 or fiber optic. If the fastener EVEN TOUCHES THESE DURING INSTALL, you are replacing the entire length. This machine is PERFECT.
    i WONT BE WATCHING ANY MORE OF YOUR REVIEWS SIR, YOU DONT EVEBN KNOW HOW TO LOAD A STAPLER.

      Appreciate the feedback.
      It’s not that the staples aren’t tight that is the issue. I know they aren’t supposed to be tight.. hence “loose cable stapler”.
      My problem is they are not consistent and most of the time barely hanging on and pull right out while you maneuver the wire for the next staple. They are also more inconsistent when stapling against a 2x4 not on a workbench but vertical framing that’s not supported as well.
      I feel like I also mentioned that MY Home Depot doesn’t stock them, didn’t say anyone else’s did not. My recommendation was that you may want to consider to see if YOURS stocks them.
      This is my experience with the tools, along with many others in the comments…and most of the reviews I read. I’m glad yours works out for what you do.. but for me it’s a swing and a miss.
