I have a Multistrada 1100 and the rear brake is mush as well talked to my mechanic and she said that the proximity of the rear brake lines to the exhaust makes the brake fluid heat up and degrade, that's why if you change the fluid it will feel good for about a day or two but then return to mush. She suggested heatsheilding on the lines and rear master cylinder as it *could* prevent the heat from cooking your fluid. Mine is a 2 valve 1100 MY/07 but the brakes seem similar.
Congrats. These are FANTASTIC bikes. I have the same year model with 25K miles. Absolutely solid. The old "unreliability" common with Ducati water cooled crotch rockets of the past has been worked out of them since around 2006. My first was a 749, then a 999r (BEAST and the last of the temperamental motors, then the 848 (solid), the 1198 (solid) and then went the adv. route and got the 2010 Multi - still have it. Couple tips I'll pass on to you if you are open to them - rear break mush goes away if you flush and fill with Dot 5 as its unaffected by the heat of the exhaust. I finally changed the belts at around 22k - just for kicks since they had absolutely 0 cracks or missing teeth but did not want to tempt fate. Checked the valves at 15k and 22k but were right in spec so nothing to do there... anecdotal comments around the blogs are apparently true and these motors tend to keep their valves within range for a long time. I feed it Walmart 10w-40 conventional every 3k miles and gasoline every 186 miles (don't ask why I know its exactly 186 miles) ;-) Any who - the one Duc I've kept over 8k miles and have no intentions of getting rid of any time soon. Can you tell I really like this bike?
Two years ago, I got a 2013 1200S Grandturismo with 9k miles for $8800. I just did the 15k Desmo service at 16.2k miles, not really an issue once you've done it.
Paid 3k of silver for my 2013 1200. 17k miles. Doing the desmo as i type this. Unlike you though, this is my first bike, and ive never worked on one before.
Nice rig..im going to jump to the last video to check out the finished product. But b4 I do..im going to look for the one that address the rear brake lever (unless you want to help me out) amd tell me which one its at.☺ I have a 16 monster 1200s with similar issue..I absolutely love it BUT not looking forward to the value adjustment..and unlike you..I won't be tackling it.☺ Im a cardiac nurse so if it was medical then I'd venture into it. Fortunately I have an amazing wrench that can address it. .thx for all your videos !
Really looking forward to watching all of these. Mine has 55k on it, regular TLC does the trick with these bikes. Look after it and it will look after you.
Wow your videos are great! I have a 2011 Multistrada, love this bike... Needing to do some maintenance and you show what I need in detail. Thank you so much!
I run yamacool coolent in mine for the past 6month no issues, rear brake will be super difficult to get some feel as they are known for overheating the fluid and reducing performance.
Why are you using the big button on the tank to turn it on and off? Does the red button/switch on the right handlebar not work? I thought the one you are using was just for emergencies to input the code when you lose the key.
I found Watch JRGo recently and he really reminded me of you. You both look and sound very similar and both flip cars. And bam! New series. Your videos are far more thorough than his so you have different styles, but the similarities are crazy!
First off, thanks for this really great series. I just bought a 1200S and this has been super helpful! Second, do you know anything about the gadget mount on the handlebar clamp? There's a good view of it at 3:31 and it looks like something I'd be interested in.
Thanks! Sorry, I don't know the anything about the gadget on the handlebar. I assume it was a phone mount but I didn't have the other side of it so I took it off.
my 2010 S Touring was posted for sale with 40K miles and couldn't get any more than $4500 offer. So i just kept and went ahead with the 45K desmo service. now with 55K miles and all's good. exhaust smokes a little at start after being sitting for a while. the smoke goes away after warmed up. is that normal or the coolant issue you speak of. thanks and excellent deal for the bike.
I am looking for a buying advice on 2014 Ducati Multistrada 1200 with 4k miles and 2018 Multistrada 950 with 2k miles. The cost of 950 is 2k more than 1200. They both are in good condition. 1200 had a minor issue with Fuel gauge sensor not working What would you pick?
You need to realize that the belts have nearly no strain on them because of springless Desmo system! I think that the valve service should be related with how hard you ride ! Concerned with the belts ? Take off the covers and examine them!!! 😁😁😁🏍🏍🍺🍺🍺
I have had 3 friend with multi 2010 2013. All 3 with blocked engine at less than 50000km. Its a shame because when go nice, the multi is a lovely bike. But is too full of problem. And of big problem. Here in italy you can sell a GS 1200 with 100000km keeping good money and in a month. But if you try to sell a multi with more than 50000km, YOU DON' T SELL IT
sigh...it's an adventure bike that is owning one is an adventure itself...(in terms of hitting your wallet...thou shallst get an extended warranty! :D )
It may lead you to bankruptcy. I had a Ducati and i pay and pay and pay. There are a lot of reasons for Ducati's being a bargain. For me Ducati never again. I wish you all the luck.

I've heard about the fluid cooking problem. It certainly doesn't help that the master cylinder sits right on top of the exhaust!

I really appreciate all the information! Good to hear that these wear their miles well. I'm looking forward to riding it a lot!

Rear brake fluid degrades due to heat. Switching to high temp race fluid solved the rear brake issue on my 2013 Multistrada.
Okay a Two wheeled project! This will be awesome!
Really looking forward to watching all of these. Mine has 55k on it, regular TLC does the trick with these bikes. Look after it and it will look after you.

Desmo Service is Italian for "skrew it I'll just sell the damn thing"
Haha yep exactly.
😆

It's another way (and the more traditional way) to turn it on and off.
I have one with 7188 miles. I was planning to sell it, hopefully for $10k. But your video makes me want to keep it! 😃
Any plans for an article on Jalopnik? That would be an excellent read.
Probably not. Unfortunately I don't have the time these days to do writeups with detailed pictures.
In poland for MTS1000DS from 2005 Ducati service ask for 500 $ per cylinder with only valve adjust without timming belts
Lot of money. Even here in the Netherlands you can get it cheaper
That was a damn steal!

And he's even in Kansas as well!
Awesome project!
Thanks for letting us know how much you’re paying for this project. Very common for TH-camrs to leave that little detail out.
Absolutely! I think that's the most important part. Oh, other than the "fun" of doing it.

☹
Might be a "quad-lock" mount.
Excited for this project!
My pre-coffee brain : "Oh, 1200cc, that's pretty small....... wait, that's a bike"
"This is a ton of motorcycle for $4,000" ...dogs start barking!
Lol. I had to stop recording. With all the dog and bird noises I didn't think this video was going to work out.

I think keeping it was a good call. What color is the smoke on startup? Any scent associated with it?
What would be your thoughts on a 2013, 60k miles, for $3500?

I am in the same situation.I think I will pick a 1200 s 2015 DVT
@@vageliskoios1062 I brought 950 and I am loving it.. Thanks for your response

Just found a 2011 with only 2800 miles on it ,,the original owner scared himself on it a rarely rode it . $10K fully loaded
150 hp for 4k thas vstorm650 money. V storm at 30k miles won't need that kinda matinence tho.

Rear brake needs to be bled. Known weak point for these but fine once done.
Was hoping for a moto guzzi
I haven't owned one of those before. I wouldn't mind one that's for sure.
sigh...it's an adventure bike that is owning one is an adventure itself...(in terms of hitting your wallet...thou shallst get an extended warranty! :D )
