I normally pick up mooring balls while single handing; and the only way to catch them is off the stern and then either walk the line forward in low winds, or in more wind tie a long line from the bow and disconnect from the stern to let the boat fall off. Then motor towards the ball while shortening the bow line or use the windlass post to pull the boat close to the ball. It keeps the boat in control at all times.
That is great advice, seems way easier in Caribbean on those other channels lol. We have been back a number of times since and getting better. Usually approach upwind or up current from stern and drift back. Sometimes that is still sketchy, like the idea of using the longer line that is already attached to the bow cleats.... thanks.
The Newcastle buoys are definitely not lift-able. That is a lesson we have seen many cruisers learn the first time in. More than once we have run over in the dingy to help get a line on. Other buoys like Montague and Bedwell harbour can be lifted. At Newcastle if the conditions allow we pick up the mooring at our stern where it is easier to reach, get a line on it and walk it forward. Then you are off for a stern tie at Pirates, I guess you enjoy a challenge. For there we have about 300' of (I think) 3/8ths poly. We drop the hook and then I hop in the dinghy and run an end to a ring and then back to the boat where I can tie off and make adjustments. We haven't perfected the maneuver and I am glad we didn't have our last tie up on video as we may have had to censor my wife's language some.

I wish I had a clamp mount for GoPro back then, missed a lot of footage. Without it, when things go wrong and first thing you do is drop camera to avoid impending disaster 😂

Thank you for a trip through nostalgia. I spent 4 years, mostly single handing in the same waters and "practicing my anchoring/mooring skills. I learned the hard way that I was almost always better off grabbing a can from the cockpit, using two lines, each with anti chafing material at the can and doing my best to avoid a stern tie. Ended up well into Alaska with memories that I will cherish for life. Watching you navigate the same experiences I had makes me smile. Have fun!

Nicely done. We can relate to much of what you experienced with the mooring and the stern tie. We hope to head down to the gulf islands this summer for a change, after three summers in Desolation. We often do weekends at Plumper Cove Marine park and the moorings there are similar. Sometimes we will back into them, put the dock line through, and then just walk it to the bow cleats. You can't beat the water quality but wouldn't mind some warmer currents :)
My parents taught me how to play cribbage at around 8 yrs of age. Now I play it on the computor without the need for cards.I always count my hand as well as my oponents hand .Keeps one mentally allert.
Well i think we are going to practice on the computer... so far getting our butts kicked against seasoned vets.... lol

the stern line should go ashore around a tree and back to the boat then you can release it with out going ashore G

Hey guys, congrats on your crossing! No question those buoys can be a challenge when it comes to hooking up. Like everything else surrounding cruising it will get easier with practice. On another topic, I take it you are flying a small drone? Under 250g? Please be mindful of areas like Newcastle which is technically an airport. Sea planes in and out if you are not a licensed drone pilot I would encourage you to check out the Canadian Drone Pilot Association for details and links to transport Canada drone flight rules. No question drones provide a unique opportunity to film (I use one a lot) but paying attention to where you fly is paramount. Anyway really enjoying your travels out on the water, looking forward to your next vid!

Drone footage taken in a water aerodrome.... forbidden within 3NM of the centre of such aerodrome. (Or 1NM from the heliport nearby, which also probably applies from the looks of the anchorage).
Thanks. I have checked and is permitted there, caution advised. It is outside the heliport 1nm radius. I find the DJI app pretty good about restricting flying zones.

She blew her knee out a few weeks before we left and went to grandmas. She was back in action for our summer sailing to desolation sound. New episode coming eventually lol.
