We did the "mounding" method 5 years ago when I bought large bags of daffodils from Sam's club without really having a space for them to go. We had just built our farmstand so I thought that would be as good a place as any but the soil was clay that had never been worked. We had loads of compost from previous chip drops so I put down fertilizer and we buried them. They grew marvelously!! I've spent this week digging and dividing them. Those 2 bags produced 6 five gallon bucketfuls of bulbs to replant. Woo-hoo!!

    • @catherinegarrigan6075

I love the mounding method for stubborn clay soil.
My only worry would be the bulbs being taken by critters. Voles are terrible where I live.

Hi guys. You should look at Nicole from flower hill farm’s channel. (She’s in zone 4) She planted 10,000 tulips in 2 hours in a wide trench. The took a tractor and dug a trench about 4 feet wide by 6 inches deep and piled the soil on either side. Than she placed all her bulbs and raked the soil back over them. Seeing what she did and what you’re doing, I’m very interested to see how both your efforts work out next spring. Keep up the good work. You are inspiring!

I know times have changed, but I sure saw it today. Back in my day, 80+ years ago, our parents gardened to save money on food and added flowers around the plot to encourage pollinators and pick a few to enjoy on the dining table. Now, about most everything, is to throw money at it. I realize that your operation there is now more than just an at home garden because not many have pallets of bagged compost to use freely. I hope there will be a day when you have horses that there will be a composting operation to go with it. Most of what could be used is thrown away now, except some that goes to the chickens or pigs, which is a good thing, and reminiscent of how it used to be. Get busy, Aaron, you have the machinery. Rodale books is an excellent source of knowledge on the subject. You have picked up a wealth of info on plants in just a short time, you can do it! Btw, the three bin system can be shortened to two and makes a batch much quicker with weekly turning.

It's great stuff which has been composted from leaves and branches gathered and shredded by the county in the fall, then composted over the winter, turned, and then screened. I live in Lane County, OR, and they have Lane County Forest Products or Rexius that provide so many varieties of soil, compost, sand, organic rich soils and compost for farmers, etc. They deliver and drop off skips/mounds of soil, as well as the ability to spray soil or compost for large residental or commercial landscaping. It's too bad there is not something like that close to you. I can't even imagine how many bags of soil you used. Since you have so much land, maybe they would deliver a huge load for you. They do have large trucks. They will also mix blends for you or deliver in a large truck half soil and the other half mulch or compost. It would be so much more cheaper and convenient down the road, especially since you have the equipment to haul it on your property. Can't wait to see how beautiful the blooms will be in the Spring! I just looked up Rexius and they will deliver to your area. I use Rexius, and have never been disappointed with their organic soil and compost.

Just a quick note---I was a winner of the Colorblend bulb give away. I placed my order and when I received and opened that box of bulbs it took my breath away. They were huge, perfect bulbs. I have planted the outside ones and I also got some inside amaryllis bulbs. Can't wait to see them bloom!! Thanks Laura and Aaron. Wonderful giveaway.

I think if you just took a water hose and lighting misted the compost it would settle better and I think have less run off. I don't know, maybe. Can't wait till spring to see this experiment. Have a great day and better weekend guys.

Laura I'm pausing at 6:24, where you are spreading the Epsoms Bulb Tone, and I can smell it!❤ You have introduced to me all the Epsoma biotone, plant tone, bulb tone etc, etc, And i have grown to love this smell because I know now its the best for plants! And Aaron for lawns, using the Epsoma lawn winterizer this year❤

It is so encouraging to see you willing to do experiments and share them with us, not knowing if it will be a success or failure. It gives us courage to do the same. For that I thank you tremendously. I had to laugh when you said it looked like a cemetery, as that was my first thought as well. Again, thank you for the wonderful video. And hey, Aaron can now say you've "planted em' high"......

Hi Laura! Could you deep till the rows to loosen the soil and just push the bulbs down, then top dress with compost as needed for depth requirements? This will be an interesting experiment. I garden in Zone 2b so soil depth (and snow cover)is extremely important as insulation for plant survival😊 LOVE your channel.

I have a flower bed with daffodils & tulips 600 tulips and 600 daffodils. For summer I plant impatience right in the flower bed with the bulbs. It makes a show stopper with color in spring and summer. Next yr I'm going to expand the flower bed it's been 5yrs since I planted the bulbs and they have multiplied.. You have inspired me with your blogs. ❤

Yes the trench method works great for my tulips 🌷 and daffodils the key to getting them close together is a wider trench and stagger your bulbs like zig zag stitch on a sewing machine and honestly I would do 3’s , 3 bulbs down 3 bulbs up this way you make a bold statement when they come up as well if they don’t all come up your not left with holes in your row with nothing ❤can’t wait til your spring video it’s going to be gorgeous!!!

Oh boy the squirrels here would be feasting if I tried that in my fields, 😆 I gave up planting tulips, but at least they leave the daffodils, hyacinths, alliums, scillas, leucojems and early snowdrops alone. Good luck with your experiment and we will be waiting to see how it turns out in the spring.

Over the winter months will we be seeing some of the photos of beautiful gardens, etc submitted by your viewers? I sure hope so. Then of course Christmas shopping with your mom and Monica’s.
