Great device I used to have it to upscale my Laserdisc player. I upgraded to a slightly newer DVDO VP20 a while ego. Interesting thing to mention: these devices get uncomfortably hot and really benefit from an external USB fan to keep it cool.
Yes, I've noticed these things run like a furnace. I don't believe there are any internal fans either. I will take up the USB fan recommendation for sure!
If your VP50Pro has the ability to adjust custom timings with your resolution, then you can downscale like in this video. Since I don't own a VP50Pro, I can't say for sure if it works or not. If you try it out, reply back!
Hey! I know this is an old video, but did you have to fix anything for games looking choppy? I have been testing it out, but PS1 games look like they are running at 15fps whereas something like the retrotink does not. Any ideas? I have framerate set to 60 locked (tried unlocked too) doesn't seem to help. Didn't know if there was a specific "game mode" I'm missing that the manual doesn't state
What exactly are you trying to do? Downscale a 480i image to 240p? Or are you upscaling from 240p/480i to say, 480p? If you’re using a retrotink in comparison, it sounds like the latter. Also, which connection type are you using to input into the HD+? Composite, S-Video, Component, or RGBS?
Still use my HD+ occasionally for up/down scaling Betamax/VHS/HI8/Laserdisc videos and video games. Solid unit, sometimes outdoing costlier processors like Crystalio etc. for older analog formats. Small heat sink for one of the chips, I repasted it with new thermal paste, that helped with the heat. Heat probably the cause of all the broken units.
You don't hear much from people using the iScan to downscale. Typically these units are more often used to upscale. I am looking at purchasing the HD+ myself in order to upscale my Hi8 home videos (S-Video output) before capturing with a Colossus II using its component video inputs. Any chance you might make a video demonstrating using this unit to upscale? There really doesn't seem to be much info out there on that subject.
Process should be even simpler than the downscaling method. There are resolution presets already made for use. All it takes is a click of a button. Resolutions to upscale go anywhere from 480p to PC resolutions like WUXGA, etc. You can set custom resolutions how I have it in my video to display whatever output you’re looking for. Unfortunately, I do not have the time these days to make a video about upscaling, but I do have this exact iScan HD+ up on sale on eBay if you wish to buy it. Hey thanks! For the Original Xbox, you'll have to make sure the image is set to 480p. The DVDO iScan HD+ will not convert 480i content to 240p, and the same goes for most downscalers that I've encountered. If you're going to use emulators from the PC, I'm sure this will work for you as well.
As much as I'd love to show that, that isn't a video I had planned on doing as I have other projects I'm working on. I'll keep this in mind in case I could spare the time!

Thank you! I don't own a DVDO VP50, but if it is similar to the iScan HD+, then you will have to enable "Advanced Mode" somewhere in the menu. For the Xbox 360, you have to set the output to 480p. If you already have, then you might have to use either the VGA cables or maybe try Component cables. I plugged my iScan HD+ using VGA to BNCx5 cables and just used Component video as output in the iScan menu. Hope this helps.

Recently acquired a VP50Pro but hadn’t thought about downscaling with it until seeing this! A quick shmup forum search suggests it might not however.

Has anyone figured out how to convert vga pass-through to 240p?
That's the only thing I have not been able to figure out. I've tried so many times, and no luck. I have a feeling it might be a firmware issue.

Yes, if you watch the video, you can see that you have to use the user mode settings to manually do this.
