Their producer for Transmission really pushed them to make a great album. He was a huge fan and spent a lot of time with the production. It stressed some of the members out quite a bit, but everyone was really happy with how it turned out. It's, at least, their best sounding record production-wise.

Really great tier list and episode! I’ve loved strung out for years and agree with many of the choices. Stoked they’re still around and hopefully they still have some good albums left in them. Much love.

Thanks as always man, seems like a lot of the Strung Out fanbase is on the same page with a lot of the records, which hasn't really been the case with many other bands.

Swan Dive and Misanthropic Principle are hands down beautiful songs. Also, if you got a Strung Out tattoo? Atleast know that the logo is called the "astrolux" not " molecule"

Dude, humble brag for a min, but when they did a show in San Diego back in, I think 2006, I use to run the Myspace Strung Out fan page, and got to speak to Chris Aiken a few weeks before the show. I requested if they could play Swan Dive (for me) and Lost Motel (for my roommate). Sure as shit, they played both songs! But what killed me is that they played Misanthropic Principle right after Swan Dive. It was the coolest fucking thing ever. I swear, Chris and Jake are the salt of the earth (as far as I know).

@21:40 i remember an interview with Jason and Chris about this album, and the split in the album was intended. They wanted the first half to a bit harder and more current, and the later half to be more familiar, old style of Strung Out.
The only ones here I don't agree with is Armors and Agents. Agent's had some good tracks, but there are too many tracks I just didn't like, and the album felt kinda corny to me (probably due to the theme of the album). I also gave a little leeway for Armor since they did lose Jordan at that time, who was a pure master at his craft. Plus there are a lot more tracks on Armor that I feel are just better compared to anything on Agents.
But I am also not looking too finely into things like production values. Usually for me if the songs are fast, drums crips and accurate, rifts and tunes have that signature Strung Out feel, and Jason singing is usually a good sign of a Strung Out album for me!
If I had my tier list here, this would be mine:
    S: Twisted/Suburban - Too classic, too good
A: Armor/Transmission - really love these albums, but probably recency-bias
B: Elements/Exile - Awesome albums, just like the above more
C: Blackhawks - I like this album, just hate that it shipped with a hidden song for only the first 5k records
D: American/Agents/Prototypes - Not a fan of American, don't like comp albums, and Agents was just a bit too corny

Another Day in Paradise is Strung Out’s debut album. The second half is an extended edition of a collection of a release they made called “The Skinny Years Before We Got Fat”, which is a collection of early songs from something like 90-93 (maybe as early as 89 even!). Jordan and Jake weren’t even in the band yet.

  • @noquarterpunk

Twisted and Suburban = 1st. God like tier. Can't be touched
Then close behind in a close group with not much between them
Transmission Alpha Delta and American Paradox = 2nd
Exile 3rd - songs great, production bad
    Element of Sonic Defiance 4th
Agents of the Underground and Another Day in Paradise = 5th. Both solid albums. Agents lacks an absolute banger though
    Small space to
Songs of Armor and Devotion 6th - but disjointed which is understandable. Has some great moments but ain't up there with the rest
    Then...
    Daylight.....
Blackhawks Over Los Angeles stone cold last. Should of been an ep. Some great songs like Calling and Orchid, but some awful songs like Dirty Little Secret. I stripped half the songs away and only kept the good ones

For me, Agents is right up there with Twisted. First 6 tracks are all slappers (yes including carcrashradio), Jason's harmonies are on point, and even some heavier stuff like Dead Spaces gets thrown in. Andy Warhol is also a great closer. Could never understand why this album gets the hate it does from some people especially coming after Blackhawks and Exile which were both fairly forgettable for me.

TAD is their best album for sure. it flows perfectly and is their most progressive album to date. Rats in the Walls is the best opener and WestCoasttrendKill is the best closer. Strung Out is the discography to my life and this album came out in a super dark time for me right when I was making vital decisions to get out of my situation and this album is a big reason why I'm still breathing. It will forever be my favorite album ....so far lol Dead Rebellion is looking to be right up there with it

I think if you're looking back at the totality of Strung Out albums, it would be easy to put Another Day in Paradise in the C ranking but if you view it through the contextual lens of what was happening in 1994, you might give it a much higher grade. '94 is when albums like Green Day's "Dookie" and The Offspring's "Smash" albums were coming out along with albums like NOFX's "Punk in Drublic." Another Day in Paradise soundied nothing like those albums and to that time, (albeit I was 14 at the time and brand new to punk) I had never heard a band like them.

The mirror images on the artwork was something I noticed a while ago...not sure why he did it that way.
For the EIO cover: the original painting is by artist Launa Bacon and I guess she eats her foot 😅
Another thing Inobserved over the yeara: Jason's lyrics changed from best on EOSD/AAP to a lot of generic "We" phrases on later albums. That bugged me for a while as the albums mentioned shown that he can do much better.
Would be great if you would sometime also rate their B sides. There is so much gold.

Seeing how bad Jason's vox are on some of the live vids on TH-cam - especially the Fat Wreck MTV 25 years thing in Japan makes me sad. SO are such a sick band, and I hold them in such high regard. But man, those live vocals are rough. People in the comments are all like "it's punk, it;s not meant to be xyz.." etc .etc... But nah, not giving a toss and performing bad for paying fans is poor form.

Suburban, Twisted, and Exile are all S tier

  • @emartinezr
    @emartinezr 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

S tiers: Suburban, Element, Transmission AD.
    A tiers: Twisted, Exile
    B: Blackhawks, Agents
    C: Paradise, Paradox
D: Prototypes, Live, Songs of Armor
Not going to rate the newest one as I don't know it well yet.
The production/mixing on Twisted to me brought it down. This was really good songwriting and where they nailed their style, but it has a couple.of bad songs and the production/mixing just sounded weird.
Suburban is the best. This is 100% punk, a tiny hint of metal but an amazing album. Incredible. Both Paradise and Twsited have more metal elements than this one.
Element is another D tier. This is almost all metal. Maybe melodic metal with breakdowns? I don't know, but this recording stands alone in any genre, era, scene, etc. There's nothing else like it. The production is 2nd only to Transmission AD.
Transmission AD another S. How can they pull off such a banger at their age and after their scene had died out. Amazing song writing, their best production and mixing (especially the drums, but actually everything sounds great) and their most uncharacteristic/typical album. If it wasn't for Nowheresville, you would not think this was Strung out... or a band that would tour with Pennywise and stuff like that.
All their other albums are good. Much better than anything else on FAT other than Potemkin City Limits and Failed States. But Suburban is unmatched. No 1.
