    This namely model is my current WIP now. Nice kit, rather easy to assemble. There is a large slot between wing roots and a fuselage when the wing is assembled, gotta fill it with cuts of plastic sheet. I also used Eduard PE sets to brighten up the interior. Pilot seat is definitely to be replaced with the etched one. And, of course, one needs to add spark plug wiring to Hikari engine. Planning to finish it as late bird with brilliant green upper surfaces and a black cowling.

    If you look at photos of WW2 Japanese aircraft, the Hinomaru are almost never worn or damaged. This is because the ground crews could be severely punished if they were not maintained in a near perfect condition - The Hinomaru was considered sacred as a symbol of Nippon/Shinto. The rest of the airframe was less important - Naval Aircraft, like the Kate were usually not as heavily weathered because, as naval Aircraft they had primer applied under the paint. Army aircraft, on the other hand, were almost NEVER primed and the paint wore heavily. BTW the B5N1 was leaving service in 1940- (prior to Pearl Harbour) and was most heavily used in China until late 1942 (from 1937). The B5N2 was the mainstay attacker for the period from 1941 to 1944-45.

    Very impressive, I like your interior work. Being away from the hobby for 20 years myself, I realize products have changed and some no longer exist ! Your chipping technique works well, and I look forward to trying it myself. With all the new water based paint and using them over a enamel base coat, makes the chipping easier I have noticed. Using Future floor polish for a decal base works very well and eliminates the chance of silvering. Being water based as well, will help the wet for chipping. Thanks for sharing and good luck on your future builds.

    First off ,it's a really good job mate....I take my hat off to you.Now, straight to the point.Can I use a primer first to prepare the model for Vallejo Model Air62 Aluminium to sesure it with a gloss varnish then some coats of hairspray on it and after that-a regular airbrushing by using acrylic paints ,then again a gloss varnish to apply decals to start the process of chipping shown in the video? Once it's done ,I would do weathering wash to finally apply a matt coat.Is this order the right one ? I am not sure about the timing of applying both gloss & matt varnishes,How long to wait before the next step is taken? ....I'd really appreciate If you could advise me on it.Thanks!( I'm new into it )

    • @scalemodelmania
      @scalemodelmania  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      not to sure about gloss coat over the base color as this might stop the water from getting to the paint during the chipping process. Best thing to do is try these steps on a scrap piece of plastic to see if its going to work. I spend a lot of time doing this as its a great way to learn what you can and can not do with various techniques. Let me know how you go mate and thanks for the comment.

      Thanks for your response....hmmm , it makes sense what you say , however it's a common practice to apply decals on a gloss coat?..I've just come to a conclusion that your technique of chipping requires avoiding it.What about using only acrylic paints? I'd like to stick to vallejo model air/color paints.I've been confused enough not to experiment with different brands/kinds of paint.Maybe I should give this up for now to get to grips with the basic techniques of scale modeling ( the last time I did it I was in the primary school ,so you can imagine how good I can be at this moment... )

    • @scalemodelmania
      @scalemodelmania  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      you are right about gloss to apply decals. You have to do the chipping before your gloss and then decals. I know what you mean about not having done modelling for a long time as i built models as a kid and then stopped for about 20 years and i remember how confusing it was getting back into the hobby as so much had changed. Just take your time and enjoy it mate.

    Now that's a weathered Kate ! Camo's different that what I'd have done ! But it's your bird ! I have a bunch of older kits some mostly done some started but my problem is the decals ! Hate and fear old ones ! ! ! . . . Lol. I have an old school ju - 87 stukadark green first coat / white last coat ! Green peeking thru the white ! I have a tail sitting black widow p - 61 1\ 48 scale and it has so much weight in it ! Should have collapsed all the landing gear ! Lol. A large bolt washers and two nuts up thru the nose landing gear into just behind the pilot's seat ! And a ton of bbs ! Lol

    • @scalemodelmania
      @scalemodelmania  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know what you mean about old decals mate. I sometimes just give up and order replacements or stencils. I love the black widow and have several in the stash. As for tail sitters i have at times just glued them to a base to stop them nosing up. Would love to see some pics of your work mate you can send them to scalemodelmania@gmail.com.

    IJA/IJN planes never had such condition of Hinomaru markings ... personnel always restored them because they're national symbol of Japan and the chipping on the B5N1 wasn't that hardcore~ in china they were new machines and B5N1 compared with B5N2 were well painted also should say that ailerons and elevators,rudder were not made of metal so they should not be chipped. apart from that, nice build!

  • @peterzebot1795

    This is just so horribly painted. Wtf is with all the scuffing down to bare metal? Simply a terrible job. why? Not even crashed planes that have flown through a sand blaster have so much paint chipped off.

    • @scalemodelmania
      @scalemodelmania  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for your input mate. You may want to do some research on some of these aircraft before making comments like this.

    • @peterzebot1795
      @peterzebot1795 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scalemodelmania nah it's your over active imagination at work. Simply put no plane in history has had so much paint stripped off while in the air. Some modelers tend to go overboard with the chipping but really it does not happen in real life. If you can provide an actual photo of a ww2 plane with that much paint stripped off, I'll retract my comment.
