    Great video! My grandfather flew P-40's in the war (i'm using his squadron number and name lol) and he said the Japanese aircraft were exceptionally manoeuvrable in the air. Keep it up mate, the quality of this video was fantastic!

      They were light and very maneuverable, but not that armored, so these things got downed easily if they were shot
      Also RAAF, that’s cool

    I feel like this is my most accomplished video in terms of the production quality. Also the model turned out pretty good too! Humbrol Maskol is definitely the way to go for brush painters (and airbrushers, although other products are available) wanting to create a chipped paint effect. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video!

    Good job! One thing is that based on the history, the painting of the Japanese red sun insignia would not peel off, since the maintenance guys would repaint the insignia as long as there were scratches. Otherwise, this was a serious mistake for them.

      @@quickkits my guess would be that they wouldn't allow a large blank area behind the gunner either, as it would cause him to be dazzled by reflected sunlight. Minor quibble: it was a really great-looking build.

    • @AreeyaKKC

      Correct there was a regulation put out requiring the Hinomaru to be in perfect condition at all times since it represented the emperor.

    I never get tired of watching you build stuff. And canopy frames drive me bonkers. That’s the one part I just truly hate doing. Masking it off, cutting the masks for each pane... I’m going to try your method now. On an old messed up kit, not anything I’m going to build in the future. Not until I learn this this method and it works for me.
    Thank you again for another great video!

    • @DerKurfuerst
      @DerKurfuerst 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It indeed is! Once I started doing advanced stuff with airbrush, weathering and riveting I lost track of the fun in it and it turned partially into work. Trying to get into easier kits now that won't require a ton of research, sanding and scratching to enjoy it more again. Those difficult kits can wait.
      Keep up your modelling work and all the best in university! Mine started last week again aswell :)

    I love the way you take unusual and not "typical" mechanics and materials to SUPER your models e.g. the screwdriver and the filler that looks nothing like the stuff I use to buy for much money in the store. Also the part when you use a pencil on other models... thats so unusual and genius! wow!
    btw. nice to see some more planes! I just flew some traffic circuits today to stay in shape. Just beore T/O our local JU52 departed in front of me. I did a video out of the cockpit. Maybe I will upload it. I am in flight school and since the PPL there is only classes until december for the ATPL... school.. :D

    This is a very nice build. I bought 2 of these kits. One to display the torpedo, and one to display the bomb racks. Don't be fooled, this 1/72 kit is massive, with lot's of parts. My advice is build the Zero fighter first, then the Val dive bomber, before tackling this kit.

    I agree with your thoughts about the called out interior color. I’ve been researching Imperial Japanese Aircraft of WWII because I’m working on a Zero diorama. From what I can tell, there were two interior colors used. The predominant is a grey-ish olive color throughout. But, toward the end of the war it appears to save time they started leaving it primered, that blue-ish metallic color. Funny, because I’ve seen so many people wrongly use zinc-chromate which was only used by the west (although now the standard for aviation). Even Russia used zinc-chromate but it was darker than the USA, British, German and Italian manufacturers used. The Italians was a little more tan or yellow in color.

    Quite an awesome project Owen. Sadly even when it was built the B5N2 was already outdated, with one 7.7mm machine gun and weak armour - it was a sitting duck. Quick question , I built a 1/72 scale Messerschmitt with decals , can I add any watercolor paint as a wash ? Do I have to cover the model before I apply a wash ? Can I lighten a dark cockpit with 1/5 ratio of thinner with XF-2 or XF-54 ?

    good video as usual . I would suggest wooden cocktail sticks for removing excess paint off canopies as they are less likely to scratch if you use the soft wood variety . Personally I think the new tool Airfix kits overscale the panel lines ; I certainly wouldn't emphasize them . Compare them with Tamiya kits ; though some Italeri kits are far worse . If you multiply the depth width of these lines by 72 you will see at close to 1mm your looking at 7.2 cm . of course a plastic kit can never be that realistic . especially when you consider paint brushed on may be thicker than that on the full size aeroplane .

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Anthony, I'd try the cocktail stick but obviously I can't build anything now and all the videos are pre-recorded, so it'll have to wait. I'd also quite like to measure the panel line widths but I don't have the model with me either, or a micrometer for that matter haha

    • @AnthonyBrown12324
      @AnthonyBrown12324 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      When ever one gets into talk of accuracy ; it can sound like pendantry . it's all about fun and making a model as best you can ; with the materials you have . I generally avoid negative criticism ; especially as my models are far from perfect . but model companies like Airfix / Revell etc do seem to respond to feedback ; which leads to better products .

    As usual amazing work. Two questions if I may a) I use Aqua Colors from Revell, what ratio of water to paint would you recommend for avoiding brush lines (I don't have an airbrush), and b) I would like to use the same paint to make a wash, what ratio of water to paint would you recommend in this case?

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not used Revell aqua colours but I'd say a ratio of 1 part thinner to 6 parts paint would work well. As for a wash, 1 part thinner to 1 part paint, or more thinner than paint should work. Just mix it and see :)

    Nice job! I like it! It's so realistic! I'm following your tips and I have a question: what filler did you use for this model? Thanks!

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used Ronseal Smooth Finish filler, but I've come to realise that the finish it gets just isn't fine enough for scale models... I'm looking into getting some proper modelling filler

    • @James-sp4er
      @James-sp4er 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Amazing build and quality production video. I just started this hobby and am having trouble finding resources. When you say you added 3 coats, is that after letting it dry after a day? assuming this is enamel paint.

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm actually using acrylic on this one, so I left it for about an hour before doing the next coat to make sure it had cured. I'm glad you like the production quality :D I hope my videos are useful to you, I try and keep the number of resources I use to a minimum

    Hi, Just wanted to tell you how pleaseed I am to see brush techniques being used in modeling. the video and work are a joy to watch. One question if I may, how do you keep the paint from running under the masking tape? tnx

    • @rurushu8094
      @rurushu8094 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      arik carmi
      To prevent the tape from running under the masking tape, Owen said yours should brush away from the tape. In my experience, when I make acrylic paint too thin, it runs underneath the tape so make sure you thin that properly. Happy modelling!

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Chin Chin is right, brush away from the tape. You can also carefully run a matchstick or wooden cocktail stick along the edge of the tape to make sure it's in full contact with the plastic before you start painting. Also, use Tamiya masking tape - it's by far the best out there.

    What's the matt varnish that you use?
    Is it the Humbrol one? Is that any good? Because I've heard people say that it gets stuck and stops working when you're half way done with the can, and that sometimes, if the spray isn't in the exact perfect condition, it whitens and leaves a horrible white layer on the model.

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use the humbrol spray, I find that if I warm it up before I use it then it's fine. Always make sure to spray out the nozzle when you're done. It's not brilliant to be honest

    • @ClonesDream
      @ClonesDream 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quick Kits
      How would I warm it up though? I don't think that sticking it in a microwave is the best idea, so maybe a hair dryer?
      And what would you suggest I should get instead of the Humbrol sprays?

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ClonesDream I put it in the oven at the lowest temperature for about a minute, you've got to be careful though - you don't want it to explode so don't leave it in there too long, keep checking it until it feels warm. I have no alternative to recommend sorry as I've never bothered to try any other products

    Great build ..one question..Did you put the gunners seat in facing the wrong way?. That plane looks battered ..I am surprised it survives that long to get into that state ..but typical of the period ..Japanese stuff- the paint didn't seem to survive long - The paint or the plane ..which dies first ..:)

    • @quickkits
      @quickkits  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I first put the seat facing forwards, as the instructions recommended, because at that time I didn't know that I was going to modify the Radio Operator to look like he was performing the role of Gunner :)
