      I saw Scofield at a jazz club in LA a couple decades back and he left fusion to return to bebop with a fine trio. However when he came out and started the first tune he held his head way back and grimaced like he had pulled a groin muscle or came on to something. That was short lived though and he returned to normal playing chords and melodies together in some good tunes I hadn't heard before.

    Actually, I do get the feeling, that quite a few talented jazz/metal/jazz metal musicians have a good sense of humour, but that it is us fans that take our favorite music and bands and players way to seriously. Having a good laugh does not mean that you don’t take your music seriously, do your best, try to break barriers and create something new. Sometimes people just fail to see the humour, because the music is too technical for our small minds to understand, I guess😃👍🏻🤘🏻

      @carloscortegoso7699 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Absolutely agree, I am not a good player, but I love guitar playing whatever the style. Currently I found a great peace trying to play jazz, bossa nova...and one thing is true at least to me, the chord progressions are really more complicated in jazz than in rock music, the harmony is beyond the progressions requires a lot of study. This point is not so important in rock with no clean sound...or even in blues. I found the jazzy finger style arrangements of rock and pop songs really clever and I love the sound of the new chords I must learn to play jazz. Anyway, I will queen playing rock,blues and jazz the rest of my life, depending of my mood condition I need one style or another.

I say do/play whatever you enjoy.

      +b232now As I have answered above my statement is just as ridiculous as the video. So my point is just kidding!
      No trolling for that, I know chords like Em7b5 or C69 myself, so nevermind. C69 sounds great at the end of a song if you add a G flat to it, that means a flattened fifth. Since I know all this stuff there is nothing you have to worry about;-).

    Lots of rock musicians take the piss out of jazz , but never other niche genres like folk or country . You know why ? Because they can't do it and no-one in the jazz world cares about their egos or their 'shredding' millions of notes . You can just tell that this man has been at some point rejected by the jazz world and is still smarting from it .

      I sometimes get a little obsessed with musicians quoting random pieces, feels like inside jokes hidden at plain "sight"... they're very fun to catch.
      It's particularly fun to see Bucky Pizzarelli troll his son John by quoting Satin Doll often when they play together. John himself gets a little trolly with Smoke on the Water and Stairway to Heaven. Guthrie Govan starts to play ringtones when he's frustrated and wants to get a laugh, problem is he is so awesome, sometimes people end up rocking out to the Nokia ringtone hahah

    Jazz music? Oh you mean playing random stuff, sometimes out of tune and saying : "yeah you understand nothing to music, I'm an educated musician so STFU". Yeah jazz. Just kidding, I don't want to get all the butthurt over educated guitarists on the planet against me. Godin is fun and incredible as usual.

    Charlie Christian, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel, Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, Herb Ellis, Monnette Sudler, Tal Farlow. Django Reinhardt, George Benson.
    Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Richie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, Pete Townsend, Slash, Robert Fripp, Dave Gilmour. They all influenced me in some shape or form but there is a man in the middle of all that who I have not mentioned. Nile Rodgers. He couldn't hold a candle to Joe Pass but then who cares. He's old school and has style. That's what it's all about.

    It's a nice joke. But a joke with 12 minutes and a big problem: don't have a punch line. And in this case, the punch line is obvious.
    1) jazz guitarist (true, all true)
    2) rock guitarist (true, all true)
    3) (the punch line) enters a big fat old black man with a physical disability, pulls up a guitar and says "get out of the way kids. let me show you how a guitar is really played" and he plays the blues... and the jazz and rock guitarist just listen and look to the ground. Ashamed.

    The main difference between a Jazz guitarist and a Rock Guitarist? Well Jazz Guitarists usually labour under the false assumption that 27 notes are always better
    then 1 - as long as they are shoe horned into a key that doesn't really fit the track being played, and of course, they are often totally deaf to that oldest of musics friends - a melody!
    On the other hand Rock Guitarists have lousy fashion sense and often play the exact same solo over at least four songs in their set.

    This is funny but this distinction is also harmful. So many guitarists insist theory will hurt them creatively and refuse to learn things that will only open so many other musical doors for them. Tablature is fine but you can't play with other musicians as easily.

      +Greg Pasquier I didn't really comment on the video, I didn't even watch all of it. I simply answered the "difference between jazz and rock". It doesn't make any sense to seek for differences in particular instruments, like guitar, drums or keyboard. Let's just think about jazz and rock. Which has a richier harmony? More difficult rhythms? More scales, theory and more advanced improvisation? I think the answer is clear.
      Again, there are 100000 other arguments, I just stated the most obvious ones. To be clear, let's not talk about our preferences, tastes etc. Let's not talk about which is "better". I don't care, for me there is only "music", I don't like to seperate it and so I never do.
      I'm kind of a player myself. Don't mean I'm a professional but I kind of been studying both classical and jazz/rock/popular music. You gotta accept some facts but first you got to get really curious about it. Without a deep analysis music often remains one big mystery.

    • @bsnf-5
      @bsnf-5 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +wforkel As long as I'm just stating the truth, which is also clearly connected with the topic of your video, I don't see why can't I post such a comment. And then again, I don't care about any "point", either I get it or not, and either if I watched it or not I still have permission to comment whatever I like. Comment section is a free section, nothing more or less. A free field.
      If I write "banana" is because I like to, it can make a point or it can be just as it is. I'm not insulting anyone with "banana" or whatever. But then you would write it's about apples, not bananas wouldn't you? So I got a good tip for you, if you don't like a comment just ignore it.

    Even better, a jazz guitarist knows and can explain why he or she plays a chord or a third or fifth or flat nine, a rock guitarist, in many cases, goes "I don't know. I just like it. What's a flat nine?" But hey, this is America, we love laughing at those who are smarter and better educated than most. Just look at who we elected in 2016.

      Grow some sense of humor, dear Lord....is just a joke alright? Plus, your argument is stupid, like who cares why you play a sus54 flat82 minus square root of a fifth ....who the hell cares... If you are to do your job as a musician, you must place yourself in the shoes of the listener. And your audience won't give two shits about all that stuff, it, as you said, simply has to sound nice. I don't extra respect you because you know all that shit. I extra respect you if your music touches my soul. Otherwise you're "meh", even though you're "WOW" in knowledge.
