    Wow 7 years ago a roller was $50k. Now a roller is $100k. One fully done is around $180k-$225k. Which is still an amazing price considering what you're getting. A slabside is number one on my lottery winnings buy list. lol Still a great video 7 years after it was produced. I never get tired of watching reviews of the Superformance cars. And this is one of the best. If not THE best.

    Spot on! AC Cobra tubular shassis, hand made aluminium body.I worked at Autocraft Brooklands (Brian Angliss) for seven years in the eighties with another painter, Peter, preparing and painting them, must have done over 250 of them all by hand. Carol Shelby came over one day to deal for the 427 engine
    to be used which was agreed.

    G'day Andrew...I'm building a kit here in Australia (not superformance) and it has cost me WAY more than 49 grand..If you are truly into cars you won't worry about the cost...you will just build it to drive.

    Earlier comment by Foxtrot Oscar, he's absolutely right re AC Cars, the rest are copies the only ones that have a link to originals are the tribute Cobras that Mr Shelby was involved with in Las Vegas. Incidentally I saw Shelby at Ardmore the New Zealand Grand Prix around 1959. The family farm was nearby so we'd walk the eight or so miles across country to the event, names such as Moss, Brabham, McLaren, Schell, Bonnier, Flockhart to name a few. little did we know then what the future was for Mr Shelby. My Mother was an amatuer photographer back then, somewhere there is a photo of Shelby and the other drivers, she photographed the lot.

    actually no original Cobras were 'built' by Shelby, they all came from AC Cars in England. Shelby contracted AC to provide a sportscar that would take a V8. AC engineers modified the Ace to take a Ford Windsor 260 (later 289/427). The completed cars were sent to Shelby for engine and trans re-insertion for the American market. Around 681 MK1/2/3 Cobras were manufactured by AC Cars between 1962-67 with the first 125 exclusively going to Shelby. Any re-engineering that the Shelby workshop carried out was on the 427 competition cars which AC also originally provided.

      Finally someone who knows about Cobras. People have no idea that the AC Cobra was designed and built across the pond in England, they also don't understand that AC was not an American manufacturer. Carol Shelby then took the car racing in the USA and by his request, AC modified the cars incrementally to improve on them...

    A tidbit of info since somebody mentioned the old 'smallblock in an Ace' comment. It should be noted that the 427 Cobra, which is the one most people think of when they think of a Cobra, wasn't really based on an AC anything. The frame, suspension, and body were all redesigned by Ford and Shelby American to better manage the big block 427 that car would carry. AC did still build the chassis and body for Shelby on the 427, and they did build cars on this chassis, but they didn't design it.

    At 14:31 Lance is drooling over my car! CSX 6016. I just found this on the web and was watching until I saw that and said to my wife (who didn't really give a shit), "That's my car !"
    In reality, I spent another 10K "fixing" a lot of crap that should have been caught by Shelby QA.
    I had a Shelby Cobra guru go bumper to bumper with a dental mirror to go through the chassis, electrical, engine, fuel, etc. We found mis-sized bolts, the chassis squeked like all hell (not a drop of grease anywhere - we ended up installing quite a few zerk fittings), and the major item that really pissed me off was that the drive shaft bolts they used were too long and cleared the rear end housing by .010 or less. A slight shift in that assembly would have made things really exciting when driving.
    As far as the engine/trans installation, I had to fix a a poorly adjusted carburetor (way too rich), and a throttle linkage installation that interfered with the circuit breaker block on the firewall. No oil filler was installed (a flat cover plate on the rear top of the block was there but no filler was installed). Aside from that, the rest of the installation was OK and to the installer's credit was a very neatly done (as opposed to sloppy).
    Now the car is a work of art but its a shame for the money Shelby charges, their QA (and Superformance who builds them) couldn't do a better job.

  • @dbr7304

    Carroll shelby was the creator of the Shelby cobra, he contacted Ford, presenting his idea to put a powerful v8 engine in a small british sports car. He then further contacted AC presenting his idea once again and they accepted. The engine was put into the 1950's AC Ace, a small nimble lightweight sports car. The car would not have been created if it wasn't for shelby himself.

  • @midnightmilo

    To be fair, and i say this as an admirer of SC; the chassis *is* the car.
    If i took a mustang and put in an engine of my own i couldn't claim i'd invented a new car without everyone laughing at me. Shelby re-engined a fantastic chassis to make a superb race car, but he wasn't comparable to say Colin Chapman.

      The body used to be British, Shelby made it all American

    • @dcanmore
      @dcanmore 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mindlesslemons nope, the engine and transmission were inserted into complete cars. AC Cars designed, engineered and built 681 MK1/2/3 Cobras from 1962-67, at first these were orders exclusively for Shelby (first 125), then AC started selling the cars themselves. Shelby contracted AC engineers to produce a sportscar that would take a V8 plus transmission, the Ace sportscar was modified around a Ford UK-supplied Windsor 260 (Ace was already using a Ford inline 6) and completed cars were sent to Shelby in the States minus engine and trans for re-insertion for the American market. It only took the Shelby workshop 8 hours to have a Cobra road-ready.

    • @user-lb7pt6jb3o

  • @TresLinguas

    So, who exactly should get credit? Obviously you have to give John Tojeiro a lot of credit for penning the shape that would eventually be the the early styling of the AC Ace and every variety of Cobra. Then AC refined the styling into the AC Ace Zephyr look which would be the basis for the styling of the 289 Cobra, after which the crew at Shelby American changed it quite a bit creating the body design for the 427 Cobra. It's not that hard to give credit where credit is due and include everybody.

    The beauty of the Cobra was not that it was created by an American or it was an American car, it was a British car and a huge American V8. Before the Cobra it was basically common knowledge you either had good handling or straight line performance. The Cobra proved you could have super car handling and brutal performance in one package and it didn’t have to cost Ferrari pricing.

    Less than 100 AC Cobras were ever built.
    AC Motors had a surplus of 43 VIN's for the AC Ace which were never titled. This allowed Shelby to manufacture these cars with fictitious VIN's due to California loop holes. This was later confirmed by Carol Shelby after an investigation was launched by the Los Angeles Times admitting the 43 VIN's were indeed not authentic AC Ace VIN's.
    If you don't have one of the original 50 something cars stamped with AC Ace VIN, you have a copy of the original.

    I'm very familiar with Auto Carrier and Shelby history, I've never seen or heard of any such deal. As for recognition, typically Auto Carrier gets more than their fair share of credit in my experience. For example, on the big block Cobra, Mk IV in AC speak, Auto Carrier didn't actually have a lot to do with chassis or suspension development. In reality, Ford assisted Shelby American on the design in this case. How many people know that? I'm betting not a lot.

      He makes sense. The Cobra even According to the Old Man Carroll Shelby himself was always intended to be a Sports Car. it was made to defeat the Corvette after all. The main essence of the Cobra was always to be a lightweight Sports Car with a very powerful engine.
      Muscle Cars are Mid Size and Full Size cars with Huge Engines and a Low Price. The Cobra is neither a Mid Size nor was it ever positioned at a low price.

    A car built under license isnt a pre title car bearing the Shelby CSX# required by the US DOT . I own a Real Shelby and get really tired of hearing " I have a Shelby too , it was built in South Africa by Superformance and has a 302 in it " . I couldnt be more happy for someone who finally got their Cobra . But having A Shelby Cobra and having a Superformance Cobra Replica are 2 completely different things .

    Would be interesting if Ford / SVT had a modern version of this to compete with the vette... and no the GT500 does not count for obvious reasons.... this car is a real Cobra (2 seater, etc...). But it would probably be too high of a price point for most.

  • @05gtdriver

    What? The AC Ace had to be re-engineered to accomodate what effects of dropping the small block Ford did to the chassis. Brakes, suspension, transmission, cooling system and the front grille opening all had to be modified to cope. AC modded the Ace to Shelby's specs to make the process of creating a Cobra easier. It wasn't just putting a 260/289 in an Ace. As for the 427 Cobra, that was an in-house Shelby design that AC purposely built from scratch(had nothing in common with original Ace)

  • @TresLinguas
    @TresLinguas 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 289 Cobra was, effectively, a reworked AC Ace body and chassis with an American V-8. The 427 Cobra used an entirely new chassis and suspension designed by Ford and Shelby American, not Auto Carrier. Realistically Auto Carrier simple wasn't capable of designing a suspension as advanced as the one in the 427 Cobra at that time, which is why Ford brought Bob Negstad and their resources into the picture to get the job done.

    The continuation cars ARE copies, they are Fiberglass and do NOT have the aluminum bodies (even the ones optioned for that) made by the original AC company. Just because Carroll made them, does not mean they are NOT copies, they ARE. In fact, as opposed to the originals, sold under different times under different rules, the 'continuation' cars were not sold road legal but as kits, or reproductions to be able to BE road legal!

    • @buzzbbird
      @buzzbbird 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Thanks for the Great info. Shelby did, in fact do a bit more than drop in engines, however.
      The 427 cars had heavily modified bodywork, done in house. The front was opened up and the shape was changed. the wheel wells were also changed.
      But i agree, Shelby was a modifier, not a manufacturer

    • @buzzbbird
      @buzzbbird 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yeah, Ken Brock wrote a very detailed book on it. The body mods were in house and most 427 street cars had ford 428 engines that produced over 100 bhp less than the 427.
      Shelby's first attempt was to drop a Chevy engine, but GM refused to participate.

      Still, one can get a better one, cheaper. Superformance in the USA is maybe the most true to the original out there, but you pay for it. and you can order one from any number of replica manufacturers. I would prefer one with an all aluminum DOVE Manufacturing built engine, much lighter than any iron block, improves handling just with that.

    No, thus creating the Shelby Cobra. He used a AC Cobra body and Chassis. AC and Shelby had a deal that the cars would have AC badges on it. But Carol only badged them with Shelby. Following a lawsuit. AC ran out of money and fell. Hence why we dont have AC cars anymore. All Carol did was Hot Rod the Cobra. Which is a shame really that AC arent really recognized for the creation of the Cobra (as body, chassis and suspension)

      That's a Corvette I think. Not many Cobra owners saw one close because they only appeared in Cobra's rear view mirrors.

    Carrol Shelby didn`t build any of those Cobras but LA based Holman-Moody did on Mr.Shelbys order

    • @nedscudder8850
      @nedscudder8850 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Holman-Moody was in Charlotte, NC. Shelby had at least one early Cobra shipped there, but it was already a complete car but for the engine.

      The Cobra like the GT40 needed a total rebuild meaning a new strenghtened chassie to handle the hot 427

    shame no one mentions this car is not a shelby but a superformance,both are great cars but the superformance is no close,body lines,chassis and stance are totally different .SPF is essentually a modern street rod dog leg chassis with a shell that sort of looks like a cobra.

  • @TFLcar
    @TFLcar  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you really watch the video. If you had you would know that Superformance builds cars that are both replicas and under license from Shelby with CSX numbers.

    But.. it wasn't an AC Cobra, it was the AC Ace like the kid before fastlane said.. So therefore it was the "Shelby Cobra".. think before "speaking" please
