  • Kirkham builds one of, if not the best Cobra replicas. Made in a MIG factory in Poland, the bodies are flawless aluminum. Ad if you want a real Shelby, and a Kirkham all in one package, you may be able to do that!

    Really cool stuff! Modern technology and hard work have produced some awesome cars these days. Here in Indianapolis we see lots of nice cars around town and special events. My old dentist had a Cobra he raced at Raceway Park in Speedway, Indiana.

      Hard to work aluminum. They made a few from copper. Never again. Everyone who worked on those were poisoned by the copper. Who would have guessed?

    Amazing , I saw one of those here in Adelaide, South Australia, must be from them for sure . It wasn’t mirror polished but it was rough aluminium body and it looked even better without the mirror finished.

      They made 2 copper cars, a 32 ford and a 427 Cobra, and almost killed the workers building them. It seems the copper dust was toxic!! So they only offer aluminum now. Depends on if you want to do some of the building yourself, or whatever, but a finished car is between 100,000 and 250,000 for a Daytona. But if you put in your own engine and so on, less.

    These same Polish Cobras are sold by a chap from Roswell, GA and stored I. The garage of my Forsyth County neighbor up the street. I went up there and watched him load a 700 HP 500 CID Cobra onto a trailer. It was in polished aluminum. I had been conversing with the across two street neighbors when suddenly we realized we couldn’t hear each other from just a few feet away. We looked up the street and there was that shiny Cobra being turned around at an intersection and lined up with the trailer.

    Just to clarify, you referred to the 427 S/C as a super coupe, but that is incorrect. The S/C stands for Semi-Competition because they were race versions made street legal. And not all of the 427 S/Cs has a 427; some actually had a 428ci and still referred to as a 427 S/C with the 427 badging. This was mainly due to the limited availability of the side-oiled 427ci FE. Back in the 80's there was a guy in town that had a Cobra kit with a fiberglass body but on a little spot on the rear fender he made it look like it was dented. He actually molded fiberglass to look like a small dent in aluminium. It may have actually been a bit of aluminium, I am not really sure how he did it but the long and short of it is he had a fiberglass body but fooled everyone into thinking it was aluminium by faking a small (silver dollar sized) dent. It looked like the paint flaked off with aluminium body under the paint.
    Back in the 80's nobody made aluminium bodies so, back then, aluminium = real Cobra.
    This guy fooled everyone with his fake dent.
    I didn't find out it was a kit until years later, at a car show, he had the car opened up and you could see the underside of the hood etc and it was obviously fiberglass.

      From Poland? The MIG factory can knock these out in their sleep. But for others it a real trick. The original cobra bodies are not nearly this good! When you see one without paint they are not nearly this good. The “prototype” in colorado is in bare metal and has perhaps the best body of any of the original ones. And nowhere as good as any of the polish ones.

At that time he was buiolding about six units, some customers from Japan, etc. He also had the two MiG's behind the shop. So the statement that Kirkham's are "the only aluminum" is not correct. These are 'AC' Cobra replicas. The car was originally a model called the Ace, built by the AC company in England. Carrol Shelby had the bright idea of putting a large American engine in a British sports car that was light and could go round corners. But he did not design or build the cars; He imported them ready built and fitted the engines. Every true Cobra, therefore, comes from England.

      I've owned Jaguar, MG, Triumph, and Lotus and I can say that the Brits have a great eye when it comes to coach design. Unfortunately that expertise does not carry over when it comes to engineering. You would think an island nation would know how to design an electrical system that resists wet weather. Mechanically they all had quirks that had to be gotten used to. Still, I loved my little cars when I was a young man. But back then I had the time to work on them.

    I wonder if the thickness of the aluminium is greater than the originals? I was in the "Chequered Flag" garage n London in the 1960s and they had a Cobra for sale. I put my hand on the top of the rear fender very lightly and to my shock felt it give a little.
    Removing my hand I saw a shallow dent there and thought I better walk away right then!
    I built a fibreglass replica Cobra and ran it as my daily driver between 1992 - 2002 when I sold it. If I ever have enough cash - seems unlikely however - the Kirkham is the one I would want to buy though!

      Mine came from Kit Car Centre which was one of the very first to offer a kit in South Africa, where I live. Based on a ladder chassis and Jag XJ running gear and suspension, I installed a rebuilt and modified Ford 302 Windsor which came out of an old Fairlane and a Borg-Warner T5 gearbox.
      When I sold it I had put about 60 000 miles on it. The market 17 years ago here for V8 powered cars was not buoyant due to the high fuel cost, so I did not get a good price, probably around USD 8000 at the then prevailing exchange rates.

    "Shelby Cobra", "Shelby", "Shelby".... Not one mention of Shelby's partner, AC Cars Ltd. of Thames-Ditton, Surrey, south of London. It was their car which they originally modified to accept a 260 Ford V-8. It was their design--which Carroll Shelby never bought the rights to, by the way--and it was they who built the complete cars. Contractually the cars were "Shelby AC Cobras". Shelby American had a lot to do with helping to develop the cars, as they kept fitting more and more powerful engines, which necessitated stronger and stronger parts, as dictated by racetrack experience, which they would pass on to AC. While not many Americans know it, AC also had its own Cobra racing efforts at Le Mans and elsewhere, and their own experiences also translated into improvements to the Cobra. It wasn't all "Shelby", "Shelby", "Shelby"...

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well yes. But it really is Shelby. Sunbeam and Allard did the same thing sort of. But the Shelby ford racing team made the magic happen.

    • @philipshilling8665
      @philipshilling8665 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Shelby team in particular and Ford had a lot to do with "the magic" you mention, but as I pointed out, AC incorporated its own racing experience into the gradual development of the Ruddspeed AC Ace into the big block Cobras, over a five year period. Much of this is unknown to Americans, because Ol' Shel did a very good job over the years in doing his utmost to deny AC any credit. The Cobra had two parents, one of whom was funded by Ford. It didn't have one parent.

      A 441 cu inch is 4.125 bore × 4.125 stroke. U get the best of both worlds. 4.125 bore is also safe .

    It's great to see your passion for these iconic motor cars. However, you claim that you supply bodyshell's to Shelby? I have to tell you that North Devon Metalcraft ( England.UK.)have been making aluminium bodies in a variety of forms for a number of years ie Porsche, Triumph and AC. They started supplying bodies to Shelby Automobiles in 2006. Perhaps they no longer do. The point l am making is that real craftsmanship is alive and well in "merry england" and probably in many places across the U.S. I expect that price dictates where you source your craftwork. We know in the UK how cost effective Polish workmanship is. Keep up the great work.
