Learn the guitar part and vocal part separately until everything is second nature. Then when putting together the vocal and guitar together, I start out by simplifying everything and practice at half speed. So for example I start with simple down strums on the chords and make sure I tie in the chord changes on a certain word in a lyric.

How do you suggest the performer handle things like... Requests from the crowd, any bad remarks from the crowd...? How to keep the crowd engaged and loving your show.?

Hi Dan, I'm a singing teacher from Melbourne. Thank you for your videos, I will be sending this video to my students.

Very informative video Dr. Dan. Rehearsing in front of a mirror is very helpful for me as I used to unnecessarily scrunch my face when I was singing. Now, I make sure to keep it relaxed and that has helped improve my pitch and tone. Also, in preparation for a gig I use your vocal warm-up routine from one of your other videos which really helps warm me up but never wears me out.

Awesome. It's great hear how these small disciplines are helping you, your voice and your performance routine, Johnny!

Hi Dr. Dan, I sing/play keyboard and guitar at regular gigs in Seniors Residences. Part of my preparation is to watch a video of my last live performance to see/hear what works, what can be tweaked etc. my recommendation is to set up a go pro camera or phone to record your live performances regularly in order to continuously monitor and improve ( be careful to train the camera on yourself, not the audience). I also record (audio only) my live performance on my phone and listen back a few times when driving or going for a walk etc. in order to critique myself, hear the audience reaction etc. this may sound like a bit much, but it has really helped me to progress in my voice, keyboard, guitar and performance skills much quicker than would have happened without this continuous feedback.

Hi Dan! I am a singer living in SF and I found this video tutorial really helpful. I'm preparing for an audition on Monday with my music duo at a hotel restaurant in Napa, so I will definitely make use of these tips! Thanks again!

All great tips! If possible, I like to spend a few minutes in a quiet space alone or with the band, before a gig. That way, when I come on and there are all these people looking at me, it's a bit like a surprise party - all these people are here for me! Works for me anyway :)

Here i was looking up some ideas for my performance tomorrow only to realize I have been doing my best to actually do all those things. I’ve been drinking as often as I can and been taking vitamins in different ways. I’ve worked in front of the mirror which helped me work on those voice details.
I’ve done it at a quiet time without kids but also with kids because distractions can happen real time.
I only haven’t done the practicing with track only but instead I record myself so I can hear what I actually sound like and where I can work on stuff.
So now I feel 90% ready for tomorrow. Still gotta warm up and drink water but first go to bed earlier tonight haha.

I do the visualization also. But I never thought about using a mirror. I usually sing the voice harmony accompaniment for another singer. I am also the one adapting the song to a guitar and then performing the guitar accompaniment. That is a lot to prepare. So I break it all down in pieces and stages. Get the guitar part worked out, the harmonies, the lyrics, the meaning of the lyrics and then fitting it all in together to help the main singer and I deliver a performance that will be the most meaningful to the audience.

Really like your tips, but Feedback is NEVER a Pleasant Sound so the screeching sound on the "Voice board wipes" at any normal volume sends me -and I'm sure others - clamoring for the mute button. Any Sound is better than Feedback screech. Like I said - Good tips tho.

Lol not every voice deserves to be heard if you’re talking about singing. There are a lot of people that don’t know how to sing at all and makes me cringe and my ears bleed. So not they shouldn’t be heard. It’s best they stay quiet unless their voice their opinion during elections or something, but singing no. Lol 😂
