I have a 340lx with 15 (18 apparently)hp Suzuki and all the add-ons including a Garmin plotter/finder. i use the std prop and fitted a SE200 Hydrofoil (it's big). Happy for the most part but back spray past 3/4 throttle is to much. Otherwise it fly's. The thing that impressed me most is you actually pronounce 'Takacat' correctly. Named after Takapuna Beach where designer spent his youth apparently. Cheers.
Nice setup!! I think the 340 with a Suzuki 15hp in hindsight is the setup I should have gone with and may still do so in the future. Although I might try cupping the prop only and no hydrofoil next time. Cheers.
I've got the 340 with 15hp and the boats amazing had my setup for 4 years. We get just under 20 knots. I've had a rocket launcher made with x4 rod holders and it's ideal for fishing. Best $5k I've spend and that was a new motor and boat. I would recommend it to anyone. I'm still trying to sort cavitation, but it's not a big deal.
Good video mate. I was looking closely at a Takacat last year as well, seems like a great little boat. Decided in the end to go for a RIB with alu hull as I'm in the coral all the time.
I do intend to end up where there is coral, I just have limited deck space for a RIB. I was planning on getting a larger Hyperlon version of what I have. If I'm careful do you think I will be okay? or do you think I should try and find away to get a RIB on board?
I am having the same issue (ventilation/cavitation) with my Truekit 3.3. Really disappointing. Apparently I need to buy a permatrim foil and or aftermarket propeller.
Great vid have you tried a hydrofoil they don't mess the water up round the shaft as much and introduces less air. ....put that engine kill chord on your wrist you naughty boy ha 😏
Hi Alex...yep total agree kill cord should have been on the wrist!! You are the first person to notice! I used a permatrim, which is a very popular type of hydro foil and you will see that in some of the next videos, and it was part of the final solution for making this setup work.
Its actually ventilation. A normal dinghy transom pushes water down to the prop. These cats don't do this so air can enter t0eh water column and if it gets close to the prop is causes the boat to slow a bit and revs increase. The cupped prop shape I think helps the most and the permatrim corrects the last small amount of the issue.
With my set up as detailed in the videos...Top speed in ideal conditions and at full throttle was 16 knots...Plaining but at the lowest speed was close too 6knots with the 2.6 metre takacat...half throttle was in between and very dependant on conditions...can not give a definitive number.
Great video, I have a Takacat 260 with a 3hp Evinrude which I am about to swap for a higher HP Suzuki 4 stroke (weighs less than Honda) so your comments on cavitation were interesting. I too live in Whangarei and am interested to find out measurements with the trim plate as I need to store it upright in my motorhome. Perhaps send me a reply so we can make contact.
Hi Steve my email address is under about on my channel. I will measure it for you this weekend. I am actually thinking of selling my setup and going bigger.
@@ryan-w hi did you sell the Cat ? and go bigger , what did you opt for in the end ... we have been looking at these , we dont have much deck space on our 26f yacht , but I would like a good size dinghy / inflatable to scuba off .. do you think this would be ok , or maybe the 300 ? Cheers , great vid ..
@@aevans692 I would go bigger if you can because it doesn't take up much more space when deflated. I would get the 300 as a minimum. Super easy to dive off!
The engine can stay on the transom as normal with the wheels down. A short shaft outboard won't reach the ground with the wheels down or if you what you can raise the outboard.
Would a 3.5hp be sufficient for one person? I am looking at this combo but want to keep the weight down . The 3.5hp 4stroke is still only 19kg. Good video thanks.
Thanks for the video! I'm looking for a new dinghy and this one is high on the list. I am real curious how your addressing the cavitation problem, I'm a bit of a speed head as well.
Great overview of how it would be before i purchase one! Thanks bro!
Love my TK 260 with two stroke Johnson 6 hp
Very impressive planing with 2.5hp
Wear the kill chord with the 6hp!
@@kqa5372 only just with the 2.5!! Easy planing with the 6hp! Thank for the comment!
What speed with the 2.5hp did you achieve by yourself..?

Do you still have yours? If so, what are your thoughts now after 3 years?

Hey there. Thanks for posting the video. Where abouts did you purchase the cupped propellor for the 6hp
It's a Solas Amita 3 prop. They are a available in lots of places, a quick google search should point you in the right direction. Cheers.
Thanks for the great video!
Robb
Im a lake sailor so this is right up my alley. Was gonna bump up to 300 for $100 more
I would definitely go bigger if you can. The longer water line is easier to plane and they pack down to a similar size.
Do you think the Suzuki 2.5 hp would plane on the 300 model
I am having the same issue (ventilation/cavitation) with my Truekit 3.3. Really disappointing. Apparently I need to buy a permatrim foil and or aftermarket propeller.
I think it is an issue with most cat dinghys. Permatrim will definitely help. I have a video on that if you look through the play list.
Did you get an answer from the manufacturer about the cavitation problem ?
No enough videos on this awesome boat so Thank you
great video
I take it a 340LX will plane easily with a 5HP tohatsu with one person? Maybe with two?
The longer water line definitely makes it easier to plane!

@@ryan-w glad permatrim worked .looks like is wasn't to difficult to fit either.
Hi. Great video. What did you find out about the cavitation?

Hi Steve my email address is under about on my channel. I will measure it for you this weekend. I am actually thinking of selling my setup and going bigger.
The Perma trim is 250mm wide at the rear and goes 140mm behind the tip of the prop nut. Hope this helps
You would be happier with a older two stroke Evinrude or Johnson 6 or 8 would be my choice but some of the yamahas are light and fast too

If you turn the wheels around they position wider and more under the boat, so not in the way of the engine :)
Great video, thanks, if you given the chance would you go for a bigger Takacat?
Definitely would have gone bigger. The pack down size isn't that much bigger either.
I like the wheels on the back there, easy transportation. Is there a place to hold the engine when you use those?
The engine can stay on the transom as normal with the wheels down. A short shaft outboard won't reach the ground with the wheels down or if you what you can raise the outboard.
@@ryan-w That's cool, makes for easy transportation!
Is the boat PVC or Hypalon?
Mines is PVC, but they make a hypalon one to order.
With some speed and some waves you can go from a boat, to airplane, to submarine and back to a boat in seconds lol
Would a 3.5hp be sufficient for one person? I am looking at this combo but want to keep the weight down . The 3.5hp 4stroke is still only 19kg. Good video thanks.
Yes, that would be fine...But...my 6hp weights 23kgs and I can go 14 knots. The Suzuki's are quite lite!
Have you tried a wing on leg of outboard motor?
Great video!
Is that a short shaft 6? Might explain the cavitation.
Yes, it was a short shaft, but that has nothing to do with the cavitation.
They make long shafts for a reason!
Yea...for high transoms.
Thanks for the video! I'm looking for a new dinghy and this one is high on the list. I am real curious how your addressing the cavitation problem, I'm a bit of a speed head as well.
What size and motor combination are you looking at?
@@CP-ge5vb I haven't decided yet. Ryan recommends going larger than he did due to the ease of handling and light weight.
