13 - Building a Boat Bathroom
This video I get cracking on making the new toilet/shower area. It is in essentially the same spot as the old one, but it is larger and will be waterproofed for showering.
Please let me know in the comments if you have any tips or think I should have done it a different way. Always happy to learn something new.

12 - 3m VHB tape failure - Second Try!!
มุมมอง 4.9K5 ปีที่แล้ว
This episode is the follow on from the 3M VHB tape failure. I retaped the windows and scuffed up the Acrylic and they failed again!! So the windows get screwed. I also cut some plywood up and talk about stuff. Let me know in the comments if you think you have any ideas of what I did wrong with the VHB tape. 11 - New Hatch & 3M VHB Boat Window Install
มุมมอง 8K5 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I install a new hatch at the front of the boat. Acquire a new small petrol inverter generator, that gets a healthy dose of CRC soft seal to help it last int the marine environment. I install new acrylic side windows using the 3M VHB tape method. It all appeared to go to plan with the VHB tape, but in the next video you will discover that it was a fail! 10 - Who needs electronics anyway?
มุมมอง 1805 ปีที่แล้ว
TIme to remove the wiring on the boat. I discovered too many instances of dodgy wiring since I have owned the boat and I decided to rewire the electrics. A lot of the wiring I found was twisted together with fingers and no mechanical fixing. This is extremely unsafe on a boat as it is a fire risk. This video I started to remove the old wiring. 8 - Starting With the Floor
มุมมอง 1375 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, we go to two of the big hardware chain stores in Whangarei to get some supplies to start the process of replacing the floor stringers in the front half of the boat. At some stage, someone has used an easily rotting softwood as floor stringers. I also babble on a bit as I do and some of the sharper of you may notice there is a newer, larger outboard on the dinghy. Details will be ...

Inflatable Catamaran Dinghy - Takacat 260lx Unboxing
มุมมอง 6K6 ปีที่แล้ว
I needed a new dinghy for the boat. After a bit of research, I settled on the Takacat lite series, specifically the 260lx. This craft is 2.6 metres long, 1.55 metres wide and only weighs 24kgs. Making it ideal for small sailboats. A bonus of this craft is its very small pack down weight and low outboard horsepower requirements because of its catamaran design. Hey mate. Try putting the cup head screws on the underside and your nuts and washers on top. Small gains make a difference
@@paulgrey5345 you are dead right! Someone from permatrim reached out and mentioned this a few years ago.
Did you get into plane also with 2 adults?
@@jeroenwillemse6425 with me and a 60kg (140pound) girls yes. Two guys my size might be a push. If you got a longer takacat it would plane easier with that same motor setup, the longer the easier to plane.
@@ryan-w Thanks!
Looks like your windows are pretty thick and you have a curve in the boat. Those windows are not going to bend to that. Maybe after fixing warming them up with a hairdryer or something would bend them a bit. Also 3m recommends to use a primer on both sides. primer 94
You might be correct with the thickness and the curve of the boat. I had not thought of this. I have also had a lot of people point out that I should have used the primer, and I think in hindsight I should have.
@@ryan-w Primer alone would not have helped
you are certainly learning the hard way, why not use butyl tape and bolt the windows on, and Silicon is not a good choice for final seal, very hard to get off, cant be painted over, so needs to be scraped off. Butyl does not set so remains pliable keeping a good seal when your deck flexes. Easily removed if you ever have to replace windows.
Heh going through the same thing now - cutting holes and finding things
Yeah!! What I found were short cuts everywhere! I ended up rewiring the entire boat.
Looking at other videos, seems a primer is a good idea. Also perhaps you put on far too much tape, such that you could not apply sufficient pressure to activate the tape. ….my turn next!
All your suggestions are a likely reason. The lack of primer is the most common feedback I have gotten from my process and in hindsight this should have been used. I have screwed them since and there have been zero issues! Cheers Ryan
Hi Ryan, great helpful videos - thank you! What is it about solas props that made you choose that brand? Cheers
Hi Toby, in all honesty it was more about convenience that they were available locally in New Zealand. They worked well and I now have a 15hp outboard on another newer dinghy with a Solas prop and still very happy.
I used my tape just on the inner part of the windows. Then a thicker "band" of adhesive to hold the rest of the window on.
Good job mate. Just done mine with adhesive.
Hey there. Thanks for posting the video. Where abouts did you purchase the cupped propellor for the 6hp
It's a Solas Amita 3 prop. They are a available in lots of places, a quick google search should point you in the right direction. Cheers.
I am having the same issue (ventilation/cavitation) with my Truekit 3.3. Really disappointing. Apparently I need to buy a permatrim foil and or aftermarket propeller.
I think it is an issue with most cat dinghys. Permatrim will definitely help. I have a video on that if you look through the play list.
What is the model of the speedy electric pump?
It's the one Takacat sell on their website
I have 11ft inflatable saturn, initially i had no problems but now i. Having cavitation problems, any idea as to why?
I had to lift the motor up 1/2” the transom flexes too much on these things also get cavitation in swell/rougher water.
I take it a 340LX will plane easily with a 5HP tohatsu with one person? Maybe with two?
The longer water line definitely makes it easier to plane!
nuts are supposed to be on the top...
What pump are you using?
What prop are you running with? Link?
Cheers mate. I have exactly the same set up so I'll try the permatrim and solas prop! I've been looking for this info for ages!
Great video much thanks!
Thanks for the great video! Robb
Great vid have you tried a hydrofoil they don't mess the water up round the shaft as much and introduces less air. ....put that engine kill chord on your wrist you naughty boy ha 😏
Hi Alex...yep total agree kill cord should have been on the wrist!! You are the first person to notice! I used a permatrim, which is a very popular type of hydro foil and you will see that in some of the next videos, and it was part of the final solution for making this setup work.
@@ryan-w glad permatrim worked .looks like is wasn't to difficult to fit either.
Mate what was the top speed you achieved with the prop cupped and the permatrim?
With the Sola prop and permatrim I achieved 16knots. I don't think I did a top speed run in the dead calm with the cupped standard prop and the permtrim. Hope that helps
You will never get it back in that bag
Yep, it's actually really easy to get back in the bag.
I was digging the music man . Sweet video I'm about to do the same trip to the barrier. Yewwww
The Barrier, It's a cool place in this world!
If you turn the wheels around they position wider and more under the boat, so not in the way of the engine :)
Howz the dingy going matey after almost 3 years ?
I have recently sold it actually and there was no problem I had with it ever, no issues with seams or anything. Used a couple of times a week and lived on the back of my ute in the sun.
@@ryan-w Thats great to know, considering purchasing me one so just digging up any dirt, thats good that its held its self in one piece , seems like you put it though alot of stress and allgoods, cheers.
I think you used the wrong thickness VHB tape bro, I'm going to use the 2.3mm tape soon and also silicone around the window also. I will let you know how it goes.
how'd it go?
@@cheapcigs9772 it didn't bro. I changed my plan at the last minute and did it the old school way. By using the tar tape stuff (I've forgot it's name)... Then bolted the window in. So far so good. I'm now a proud owner of a roll of 3M window tape that cost over £80 and never going to use. Grrr!
Re; Glue vs welded; "glued pvc is welded in a way. The glue contains a solvent that partially "melts" both pieces the pvc to be joined, that then join together as a single unit, and hardens as the solvent cures. I'm a retired electrician who has installed miles of underground pvc conduit. A properly glued pvc joint, allowed to cure for 24 hrs or more, is just about impossible break. I have no trouble, none, with a PVC dinghy.
How does she sail in light wind? I heard that Miura's have really small sail area. How much water and fuel does she carry?
She is actually really good in light wind. 140 percent genoa helps...hull shape is great for light airs. Water and fuel depends on your build as they were all different..mine has 300 litres of water and 35 Litre diesel. Next week my 208litre diesel tank will arrive and I will have plenty. You can modify to suit.
@@ryan-w The one I'm looking actually have same fuel water capacity as well, I thought it carry too little fuel. Thanks.
@@ryan-w Forgot to ask, how fast she actually goes on average?
@@wckoek speed thing is trick as I don't know where you will be sailing or how you and I compare with sailing ability. However, new Zealand coastal, sailing with average wind range of 8 - 20 knots, mostly on the beam. My average speed is just over 6 knots. But it's hard to quantify average speed because I haven't accurately looked at it. But...its surprisingly good for the size of boat in my opinion.
Have you tried a wing on leg of outboard motor?
With some speed and some waves you can go from a boat, to airplane, to submarine and back to a boat in seconds lol
I've got a takacat as my first boat. How can I tell if my prop is cavitating/ventilating?
Thanks for your comment....what you will Notice is the engine will suddenly increase revs and you will slow down...or you will stall. It will be very noticeable...what size did you get and outboard?
@@ryan-w Lehr 9.9. I didn't notice the increased revs but I did stall once.
It's a 340
@@benchcomptons it's quite obvious when it happens. How do you find the gas powered outboard?
@@ryan-w I see. Alright I'll watch out for it. The motor is a bit hard to start but I really like that I don't have to smell gas ever or worry about running it dry.

I see permatrim only makes a trim plate for HP starting at 8. Is it the same?
They make more sizes than they advertise. Email permatrim, they get back to you pretty quickly
im about to do acrylic window replacement on a lidgard 40. i saw YT star " boatworks today" ush 3M VHB tape to place windows then he ran a bead of dowel corning 795 silicone around the perimeter. he seems to know his stuff. ill ask boatbuilders out at halfmoon bay where my boat is what the process is. good winter projects.
The last advice I got was to use the acrylic primer before the VHB tape...but I had already screwed my on at that stage, and have sealed with 795 afterwards as well.
Great video, thanks, if you given the chance would you go for a bigger Takacat?
Definitely would have gone bigger. The pack down size isn't that much bigger either.
Nuts are supposed to go on top.
Yes you are correct. Swapped them over later on after permatrim messaged me.
Thats an expensive lesson, thanks for sharing your experience. I am replacing windows in my foxcub 18 so this has been helpful.
What speed you getting with the 6 at half throttle?
With my set up as detailed in the videos...Top speed in ideal conditions and at full throttle was 16 knots...Plaining but at the lowest speed was close too 6knots with the 2.6 metre takacat...half throttle was in between and very dependant on conditions...can not give a definitive number.
Is that a short shaft 6? Might explain the cavitation.
Yes, it was a short shaft, but that has nothing to do with the cavitation.
They make long shafts for a reason!
Yea...for high transoms.
Im a lake sailor so this is right up my alley. Was gonna bump up to 300 for $100 more
I would definitely go bigger if you can. The longer water line is easier to plane and they pack down to a similar size.
Do you think the Suzuki 2.5 hp would plane on the 300 model
Overdue an update!
When are we deporting

Is the boat PVC or Hypalon?
Mines is PVC, but they make a hypalon one to order.
Same type of setup as you. th-cam.com/video/mAGTSaFKBqc/w-d-xo.html
It is good looking at another setup almost the same as mine. I have a 6” prop and noticed it can cavitate however could plane with 2 adults.
