Getting better for sure, but many still don't make anything that is sturdy enough to actually use I don't think, most are honeycomb type machines that leave a lot of empty hollow spaces inside the item...maybe that depends on how the drawing is for the item being made? I just know from seeing some gears that they were not holding up well to being used due to the hollow type printing design they use to save on plastic.
I saw a video somewhere not too long ago about a Home Depot back east using a Dremel 3D printer as a demo model at a store and initially it was just printing off little figurines and nonsense like that and someone that worked at the store found out about a program that helps kids get prosthetics...somehow they managed to get the ok and received files for the printer to make 3D printed prosthetics...so now rather than their demo machine making nonsense little figurines that get thrown away they are making kids limbs that benefit them and are getting funding to do so through the program.
      Ahh found the video: www.capitalgazette.com/news/annapolis/ac-cn-home-depot-prosthetics-0728-story.html

I have actually worked at Stratasys before. It all started at school when I was new to 3d printing but during my work at Stratasys I learned A LOT about these machines. The place where I worked they have both Fortus (FDM) and Objet or Connex (Polyjet) machines. They even have one printer that can print parts up close to 1m in length. It is really fascinating to understand how Polyjet printing works eventhough it is such a simple principle. I got a lot of insight in these devices and helped the employees maintaining them. I was even allowed to print some parts for my hobby projects on such printers.

Some of the creations really do give a big hope, especially metal ones. If those prove to be strong enough, those could be used to create spare parts for classic cars, which are no longer produced.
I was hoping to buy myself a cheap printer this year like Anycubic, but unfortunately I had lots of other things to take care of, like building a new PC, but I hope that soon after my small bussiness would run, I'd be finally able to go into the 3D printing world myself ! Thank you very much for the tour and showing us those amazing printers !

Its been out there you just have to have a lot of green in your wallet LOL. I wouldn't mind having one to mess around with but that's way too much money to pay for a toy...and the majority of them only 3d print in a honeycomb type fill so whatever you make isn't very solid so trying to make something that needs to be sturdy such as gears or similar won't hold up due to the majority of the item being hollow.

You are right. The whole 3D printing hype thing from about 2012/2013 was due to far too much media attention being focused on personal 3D printers. In contrast, industrial 3D printing has been consistently progressing as many predicted.

This is a good idea for a video that I will certainly return to. In fact, my plan for this week was to make two videos based around the TCT event; one on consumer printers and materials, and one on industrial digital manufacturing developments. But unfortunately I became rather ill last weekend, and only visited TCT for one day rather than two, and so only made one video. :(

Sorry to hear you were unwell, hope you are recovered now. What strikes me because you are so good are explaining and demonstrating single board computers, it would seem that a project that covers 3D printing and especially the interface with designing projects on computers, might be a good topic for you. Although having said that, I am sure it would take quite a bit of planning and time to bring such a project together.

Thanks for another educational upload. The drawback with 3D printing is the time required to create the object on the screen and then the time needed to do the printing. If you are going to print out standard objects like chess pieces, then it's great, but for bespoke items not so clever in relation to the time and effort you've got to put into it.

Prices are coming down but like other things you get what you pay for, go too cheap and its nothing more than a expensive toy you'll play with for a few days then throw on a shelf somewhere to never touch again, then you get into the more expensive ones that you can actually create usable items with and then well like any other hobby you build an addition onto your house and then it just gets more expensive from there HAHA!!!

they could be remade by this
if i can choose the material like silver i also could make a silver cooler or at least copper
i have some chipsets where they have different locations for holes where you fix the fan that would also be a idea
having a metal printer would be awesome

Entry level 3D printer? Hmm, have you made anything of use with it yet? How sturdy are the items that it can make? Would you buy it again or would you recommend someone buy something a bit more higher priced? I'm trying to decide whether or not to get one, and I don't want to make the mistake of getting a cheap one if they just aren't going to be worth it. Something I have seen in some gears someone 3D printed were they turned out extremely hollow so they weren't holding up to light use.

Hi, the entry level I went with was a creality ender 2. Cost about £120. (it was on sale, there were cheaper ones but they were much more kit form and some had reputations of catching fire). As for useful, well I got it because I've been working on a wireless system for controlling focus on a video camera and needed to make a mount for the motor and various gears - all of which are really accurate and not completely hollow(it's called infill - you can determine how strong/light a part needs to be), they are as good as proper lens gears that I've paid £10 each for(and are exactly to my requirements). Also made custom project box for another electronics project. I've iterated through a number of different ideas and the biggest thing is just trying things, if it doesn't work, tweak design, print again and then repeat until you get what you need. So far only printed in PLA but it can do ABS which I may use for final parts. My only advice is to do research to find out if one exists that fits your needs and budget. Before buying it I was going to get parts printed online which would have cost £20 - £30 each. After getting the printer one of the first things I printed was the thing I was going to send to 3d hubs(or someone like that), turns out I had made a mistake in the design, so immediately corrected it and printed again. If I had gone the online route I would have paid for a useless piece of plastic. Repeat that story a couple of times and I've saved the costs of the printer already.
