- How to Replace Fuel Pump Chevy Avalanche Suburban GMC Yukon Cadillac Escalade 5.3L 6.0L. 2002 2003 2004 How to Change Fuel Pump Step by Step. This video will show you step by step procedure on replacing the fuel pump on your truck. What needs to be removed, unplugged, where to place jacks and how to lower the fuel tank using two jacks. Always be careful around fuel and a heavy gas tank so take every precaution u can to be safe. It can be done by one person, i did this on my own but i do not recommend it.

GREAT video sir! I just discovered a fuel leak on my '09 Avalanche and suspect the fuel pump assembly to be rusty and leaking (like my old '07 Envoy Denali). Anyhow, you just gave me the kick to try it out on my own as my mechanic is fully booked and I need my truck next weekend. Awesome video - and yeah, even if you speak fast I got it all. Thx again.

I have a family member who has a chevy silverado and his fuel pump needed to be replaced so he went to a mechanic and charged him over 700$ which is way too much and absolutely not paying that much

060922 Chevy 2002 Avalanche series 1500 developed a fuel leak and having difficulty taking off the "vapor canister?" before lowering the Fuel Tank. Last night, I came across your video after searching and watching lots of video on fuel pump replacement. Your video is A1 EXCELLENT in instruction info on how to loosen those fuel connectors and electronic connectors. I will do fuel lines and fuel filter replacements too. Highly likely suspect the outside metal hoses of the fuel pump (feed/return metal hoses) are really rusted and leaking. Big job ahead too replacing the fuel lines after the fuel pump replacement. First time DIY!!! Also, the info on "fuel pressure needs to be restored" by doing several on/off ignition switching is way up there EXCELLENT. THANK YOU AND THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! God Bless!

@@backyardchevy328 My first was an 67 Impala. I was 16 at the time. It was in 1976.I loved that car. Had it for about a year then some kid rear ended me. He did give me what I paid for it. I really liked the room I had when working on it. Cars were so much simpler back then. You open the hood and you could see everything. My Mom had a 71 Camero at the time. Used to sneak it out at night. I remember the speedometer read 180 MPH. I always wondered how fast it would actually go.
@@patsawyer3516 yea the space on those vehicles made everything so much easier to work on..my nova had only 120mph lol..unfortunately the needle bounces up and down when taken faster than 120mph

@@rebinny it went well, although we only had 2 Jack's so we had to belly crawl under the truck with like 1 inch of clearance between my face and the rear dif when I was removing the rear hoses lol. Bu this video was rather helpful. But for dropping the gas tank down we only had 1 Jack and luckily the tank was nearly empty, so we put it in the middle and I was under the driveline and wiggled the tank out from the lip of the support bracket and it dropped down. Isnt too hard, but might want to replace the fuel filler hose that connects to the tank if its rotten or just for preventative maintenance.
Ok so now I know because I need to do the fuel tank pump this sat, since it died on me 2 time already. I'm stranded typing this lol. Good video on how to take it off step by step

Backyard Chevy Thanks was able to put it back together Rule of thumb do this on a complete empty tank....Avalanche up and running now I know how much fuel I have contacted old owner he had avalanche never replaced pump so no need to replce sending unit replaced pump!!!👍🏽. Big thanks for the video, it helped me a lot doing this job... It was not super easy though. If I had to redo it I would only lower the rear part and change the pump under the car...

This is the first video I've seen where the fuel lines were disconnected at the front of the tank rather than at the pump before lowering the tank completely. My problem is that I'm leaking gasoline from the top of the tank. Truck runs fine but sometimes needs two tries to start it. Need to drop the tank to see what's up. Plan to have new pump in hand when I do. Very helpful video. Thanks
Thats usually a problem with the fuel pressure regulator..when the regulator doesnt hold pressure youll have to cycle key on and off a few times to build pressure back up..but unfortunately its located inside the tank part of that fuel pump module assembly
The reason u wanna disconnect the lines at the front of the pump is when u go to lower the tank it might pull and damage/kink the lines, so if u disconnect it from there u avoid the risk of damaging
@@backyardchevy328 Where steel lines connect to plastic lines at front of tank is rusted and seems impossible (well difficult) to remove. Turns out there is a whole in the line going to the filter. Need to replace all of the lines. After looking at the lines and reading lots of posts I decided to pay a guy $400 to do the job for me. I'm an apartment dweller and have no place to do the work that might go on for several days off an on. I changed my own brake lines a few years ago when I had my own driveway but this looks more difficult and dangerous because the the fuel. Thanks for your help.

@@rebinny Very understandable, it is quite dangerous and u got to take a lot of precaution...yea some places have more rust than others, luckily the one i did, did not have much rust..but yes i have encountered some very rusty lines and the rust does make things stick.
I'm doing this an even easier way - getting a different tank from a salvage yard, because I don't have a choice. My lock ring corroded and rusted right to the metal tabs on the tank. Tried a hammer and a chisel after a full day of soaking in PB blaster. A couple of chunks went flying. I put the hammer and chisel down and said "Okay - I'm done." Great video btw.

Bro u made the vapor canister removal look so easy. Those damn hoses wouldn’t come off supper dried out and the last little hose was the hardest..thanks for the video tho
Some do come off easier than others but i believe one did crack on me...but yea i do remember the smallest one being hard to do as well

@@kylosolo8815 yea then its probably one side of the clip still grabbing..usually one side will easily disengage but the other wont want to..u can try a screwdriver to press in on the bigger opening part of it while u hold the other just to see if they both disengage..once the clip releases usually the hose just pulls off pretty easy as long as it rotates..if u do got someone who can help u..u can use 2 flat screwdrivers..press in on the clip from both ends of the square opening while someone just holds the line pulling back..moment those clips release hose..the hose will move back enough to be removed

Pro tip: always siphon the gas from the tank before starting. This makes the tank lighter, and helps prevent fuel from spilling everywhere
Definitely...i had to siphon out more than half cause it was completely full when it went out.
I did this on a Chevy Truck, but I didn't have to remove the gas tank.. I unbolted and removed the bed from the frame and removed the old pump & installed the New Gas Pump on the gas tank & re-installed the bed. But on an Avalanche you have to take out the gas tank from below because the bed is not removable

I'm afraid I will have to do much of this just to get the bolts for the midgate drain assembly on my O4 AVY. it really bugs me that they didnt weld the nuts to bed in a place which is under the fuel tank. This was a great vid thanks.

Thank you so much🙂..the fuel tank lowers the same way but the fuel pump is different, theres a hose that connects to fuel pump assembly on the inside for the 07s and newer.

May I know what kind of lubricant do you recommend for that black ring? Can I use dielectric grease? My car is different, it would be green o-ring (Fuel tank lock o-ring). So do you recommend to grease every o-ring, or it depends on the car model? Thank you for the film, it is very informative.
Definitely not dielectric since thatll damage o rings over time..youll wanna use a silicone lubricant grease...some actually will say o ring lubricant grease

So what happens if the whole frame perch for the straps is rusted out and busts out around the nut and bolt? Now what new frame perch? Can a guy buy those somewhere?
For silverados they do sell the strap assembly with the bracket but for avalanche's unfortunately either gotta fabricate something to work or maybe the section can be cut off and welded from a good donor...as far as i know they dont sell em but if it is that common of an issue maybe someone makes it.

I noticed after you put the new pump assembly in you didn't have the fuel strainer/ fuel sock on the bottom, I ordered the same Delphi unit you have that didnt come with one, have you had any issues running without the fuel strainer?, or do you know where I could order one?

You did not replace the sock (filter) on fuel pump. Unless the new pump does not require one, but that really would be strange as there is no other fuel filter! But other wise, good video!
I need replace the fuel line(small leak) but it will get worse considering lines are pretty rusted between fuel filter and spot where u disconnect them. I just couldn't figure out how you get to disconnect it before dropping a tank. I mean there is hardly any room in there to squeeze in your hand and see what you doing at same time. Am I missing something? Also how do I release pressure from fuel lines before I disconnect them? (2002 avalanche 1500). Thank you
I was laying down horizontal to the truck where the connection was and if u kinda sit up where the connection is, that's where i was able to look and record where the connection was and reach in....to release fuel pressure with the truck running u can pull out the fuel pump fuse..that will cut off the fuel pump and use up the gas in the fuel line relieving the pressure..although they will still have fuel, it wont be under pressure this way.

Yea they are especially if ones cracked, u gotta use a pick to lift each side to separate the canister from hose

How come you stuck the new fuel pump in there without a new screen. That little sock fuel pump was supposed to be on the new fuel pump with a new one. That was a rookie mistake
Actually on that fuel pump design it had no need for an external strainer per instructions

Video actually might be worth something if you're not talking so fast or if it doesn't sound like you got a mouth full of rocks. Remember just because you know something or know how something works the whole point of making a demonstrating video is to go slowly and explain things for people to understand how to do it correctly and safely
Yea its something ive been working on, ive noticed that on some of my older videos as well that i speak too fast, but i think ive done a lil better on my more recent videos.
