Thank you for capturing a quintessential Kansas day as you were leaving Kinsley. The shot of the airplane hanger and then the plane flying with the sunrise in the background was absolutely beautiful. Then it just kept getting better with the nearby storms, wildflowers, dragonflies, and ending with our stunning Kansas sunsets. I am sorry you had to be in our state during the oppressive heat and wind though.
I laughed at the trail along the Arkansas River discussion (around 13:20). Although a mightly force in Colorado, it hits Kansas and essentially flows underground for much of the way. All you get to see is a sand bed, that rarely, but occasionally, will have flash floods during storms.
Agree with the weather replacing scenery out there. Some of the most amazing landscape photos I’ve ever seen came from out there of tornadoes at sunset with rainbows everywhere. Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful.
Thank you for all of the beautiful nature shots in this video. Kansas was beautiful when I drove across it... massive dark purple storm clouds in the distance while the low sun was turning all the wheat fields gold.
The hiway 50 corridor is better than taking Interstate 70 across western Kansas. Most people know it by the interstate (which is beautiful east of Fort Riley). Since we're Kansans we say that we have to get through hell before we get to heaven (Colorado). I had a religious upbringing.
Every time I watch your videos in this section I can only think, oh wow. Please stay safe and I hope you find some enjoyment, or at least a sense of accomplishment. Thanks for sharing.
I get into a headspace on long distance trips where I get a lot of satisfaction over progress and covering ground. So even if the individual day might not be the best I still enjoy the process. Also we read a lot
Good mileage despite the heat. Morning overcast was really a bonus, but the wind. . . ah, the wind.... Still, on to Dodge City. Doing GREAT! Hike on, Tortoise
Perhaps some superglue to attach your umbrella back together? Seems keeping some superglue on the trail might be handy?….says a guy sitting on his couch ;)
I needed to size up when I was distance running and my feet have actually stayed at least a half size larger, so you may have that to look forward to, Jen!
"This too shall pass" phrase got me thinking about it since you mentioned it in your quest. It's said that Abraham Lincoln made it popular in a 1859 speech. Here's what's said of Lincoln "Here’s the thing, Lincoln suffered from debilitating depression most of his life. Modern psychology wasn't around to treat the illness, so everyone simply called it melancholy. At 32 years old, Lincoln was so low that his friends took all the knives, guns, and rope from his house to prevent self-harm. "I'm now the most miserable man living," he once wrote to a friend."
I hope you enjoyed Kinsley, my lovely home town. It’s 1561 air miles each way, and not 2500, just to clarify. Everyone knows it’s not the geographical center of the US. It’s just a little point of pride that the town has always held. All little towns need something like that. All people do, for that matter. At this moment the great mural artist Dave Lowenstein and I are painting a mural in Kinsley with the help of the State. The sign is the star of the mural. It’s also bringing a lot of happiness to my town. Have a have a safe trip! It’ll get lots tougher from here.
The wind has been highly bloody annoying and if I had access to one of those microphone socks I might have tried it. However due to the fact our videos are usually 100+ clips taken at different times during the day using anything we have to set up every time adds a much bigger amount of hassle than your average more staged videos
I know this is obscure but, when you said you were half way, and showed a clip of a milage sign, 3:50 - someone put kilometers instead of miles, but labeled it miles. Just take these numbers and multiply by 1.6 (easy way to convert mi. to klm.) It's close to 2,500 just like you said. Halfway. Oooops!
So we’ve been going through soybean fields endlessly all summer … that field was something different. Apple photo identified it as a green bean. If it’s a soybean, it’s a different type than the main one
@@delano62 Am enjoying watching your trek across Kansas. A nice balance of commentary and great photography. I wonder what Nevada and Death Valley will be like. Wishing you the best.
Every single time I have tried a Red Bull it has given me a headache and taste like carbonated vomit. Versus coffee, where I actually enjoy the drinking experience.

today's video really captured the force of the heat and the wind. great job -- both hiking and filming

It’s really kind of a bummer we missed the wheat season
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes You’ll have to drive through in spring sometime…
Yes DONT drink random well water in the Ark river valley!!! Enjoying the hike. thanks

Heat and wind, heat and wind, heat and wind, home sweet home for tonight.
That looked and sounded like a tough day. Glad you made progress.

This whole thing is as incomprehensible as it is admirable.
“They said we were crazy. “. “ yeah we get that a lot “. Lol
Thanks Taters. Cool dragonfly.
Quite an interesting adventure you folks are having.
Seems like they always are one way or another
I could say so much in this comment, but I will say only , I’m glad you found a decent place to sleep. Stay safe!!😊

I do carry one superglue tube with me for emergencies. We were able to pop things together enough though where we didn’t need to waste it
I needed to size up when I was distance running and my feet have actually stayed at least a half size larger, so you may have that to look forward to, Jen!
I'm 2 sizes up from my teenager years (I'm 62). Let's not talk about weight!
This is so F’d. I love it. Respect man.

Hey Y'all. You are incredably tough. I thought it was tough crossing Kansas in a day on a motorcycle. Turns out I am weak tea.
"Next step is meth." Matt, I can totally picture you croaking "I regret nothing!" as you keel over from a heart attack
Thank God for cloud cover
“All come to look for America”…..Simon and Garfunkel
scissor tailed flycatcher? cool
Yes! I was hoping they would see one.
Are you going to summit sunflower mountain?
I haven't been brave enough yet.
i do not believe it is on his path. that is about 80 miles north of Arkansas river crossing into Colorado.
Sadly it’s too far north of us
Halfway! It's all downhill from here! Wind is the suckiest of all the "good" weathers, but hey, it has to help a little with the heat, maybe?
Day 117 watch. I suspect there will be a number of folks giving you advice on the wind noise. When such things happen, they always do.

If they do ever build a public trail along the river in Kansas, it will have to be made of yellow bricks.
Do you leave a note with a $1 or anything at the people's home if you take their water?
Almost always we talk to someone and ask even if the faucet is right there

Almost never tornados this late in the summer
Soy bean field, not green bean
So we’ve been going through soybean fields endlessly all summer … that field was something different. Apple photo identified it as a green bean. If it’s a soybean, it’s a different type than the main one
@jenniferblackie2027 hmmmm.. Production green beans are normally grown in wide rows to allow for mechanical harvesting
.
Ever tried the Death Wish instant coffee? It’s 300mg per packet.
No. I actually don’t usually like high caffeine content coffee. I like drinking it too much so lower caffeine = Matt can drink more
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes makes sense. it’s bitter anyhow and not as enjoyable as 2 Via’s which gives you nearly as much caffeine.
And I really don’t like bitter coffee. I like strong coffee, just not bitter
😎✌
10:05 Be nice Matt!
I wonder if the people you meet in this section would admit that they're in western Kansas?
It's pronounced The Are Kansas River
In Kansas at least.
But only until the Colorado border where consistency is restored :)
@@delano62 Am enjoying watching your trek across Kansas. A nice balance of commentary and great photography. I wonder what Nevada and Death Valley will be like. Wishing you the best.
Nevada is usually lovely in the fall. I’ve done a lot of peaks out that way
This video is not any more incomprehensible than your usual videos.... I mean that in a positive way, I think?
It just seems like the meth in Kansas would be shit. Have you thought about sugar free red bull?
Every single time I have tried a Red Bull it has given me a headache and taste like carbonated vomit. Versus coffee, where I actually enjoy the drinking experience.
